Book Synopsis The Cauldron of Ethnicity in the Modern World by : Manning Nash
Download or read book The Cauldron of Ethnicity in the Modern World written by Manning Nash and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "melting pot" metaphor conveys an image of individuals from varied origins blending imperceptibly together. But when such ingredients as inequality, nationalism, or perceived injustice are added to the mix, the melting pot can become a seething cauldron. Manning Nash's examination of ethnicity in the postcolonial world offers insights into the ways that ethnic tensions are engendered and sustained. Ethnicity, Nash suggests, is formed by historical processes based on preexisting elements of society and culture. Notions of ethnicity have at their core the recursive metaphor of "blood, bed, and cult"—body substance, kinship, and religious belief. When individuals who perceive themselves bound by these ties are threatened in some way, ethnicity becomes a unifying call to action. Nash identifies a number of concepts—political self-rule, economic opportunity, cultural identity, religious freedom—that have been rallying cries for ethnic struggles in the twentieth century. He offers a novel analysis of the ways that ethnic groups identify themselves and maintain "boundaries," and he assesses the circumstances under which ethnicity may be relevant or nearly irrelevant to political, economic, and cultural dynamics. Nash presents three case studies that highlight the multifaceted nature of ethnicity and that each demonstrate a particular mode of comparative method. He compares a situation of conquest (Ladino and Maya in Mexico and Guatemala), a new, excolonial nation with nearly equally sized groups (Chinese and Malays in Malaysia), and a small immigrant group in a large nation (Jews in the United States), pointing out the many possible combinations of political, economic, or cultural struggles in ethnic conflicts. Even in nations where such conflict is minimal, Nash warns, ethnicity remains a reservoir of turbulence in a world where power, wealth, and dignity are unevenly and illegitimately distributed.
Book Synopsis Nationalist Exclusion and Ethnic Conflict by : Andreas Wimmer
Download or read book Nationalist Exclusion and Ethnic Conflict written by Andreas Wimmer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andreas Wimmer argues that nationalist and ethnic politics have shaped modern societies to a far greater extent than has been acknowledged by social scientists. The modern state governs in the name of a people defined in ethnic and national terms. Democratic participation, equality before the law and protection from arbitrary violence were offered only to the ethnic group in a privileged relationship with the emerging nation-state. Depending on circumstances, the dynamics of exclusion took on different forms. Where nation building was successful , immigrants and ethnic minorities are excluded from full participation; they risk being targets of xenophobia and racism. In weaker states, political closure proceeded along ethnic, rather than national lines and leads to corresponding forms of conflict and violence. In chapters on Mexico, Iraq and Switzerland, Wimmer provides extended case studies that support and contextualise this argument.

Book Synopsis Ethnicity, Gender and the Subversion of Nationalism by : Bodil Folke Frederiksen
Download or read book Ethnicity, Gender and the Subversion of Nationalism written by Bodil Folke Frederiksen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the politics of identity by analysing the intersections between ethnicity, gender and nationalism in developing societies. These markers of identity are not understood as constituting essences, but as springing from people's core experiences, yearnings and strategic life plans in a context where resources are scarce. As such, identities may be, and are, contested. The intersections are traced across three areas: social and cultural reproduction; ideologies, stereotypes and practices; and nationalist politics and discourse which has tended to remove women from the public arena and construct an ideal of women's domesticity.

Book excerpt: Urban ethnic groups frequently are confronted by residential segregation, discrimination, xenophobia, and conflict. However, ethnic diversity has also enriched the urban scene with a variety of languages, religions, businesses, and cultural activities. In this volume, distinguished scholars present analyses of ethnic population change in twelve urban areas: Chicago, Los Angeles, Sydney/Melbourne, Paris, London, Amsterdam, the Ruhr conurbation, Vienna, Milan, Madrid, Johannesburg/Durban, and Singapore. EthniCity reveals fundamental commonalities in ethnic community dynamics as well as significant differences from place to place. Book excerpt: This text discusses key debates in the sociology of ethnicity and race, arguing that ethnicity is culturally expressed and politically and economically contextualized. The historical trajectories of slavery, colonialism and nation state formation have seen ethnicities and racisms develop along some parallel, and some quite different, lines. Drawing on examples from all around the globe, including Britain, continental Europe, the USA, Hawaii and Malaysia, this book offers a theoretically-informed account of a major sociological issue in a truly international and comparative perspective.

Book Synopsis Overseas Chinese, Ethnic Minorities and Nationalism by : Elena Barabantseva
Download or read book Overseas Chinese, Ethnic Minorities and Nationalism written by Elena Barabantseva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elena Barabantseva looks at the close relationship between state-led nationalism and modernisation, with specific reference to discourses on the overseas Chinese and minority nationalities. The interplay between modernisation programmes and nationalist discourses has shaped China’s national project, whose membership criteria have evolved historically. By looking specifically at the ascribed roles of China’s ethnic minorities and overseas Chinese in successive state-led modernisation efforts, This book offers new perspectives on the changing boundaries of the Chinese nation. It places domestic nation-building and transnational identity politics in a single analytical framework, and examines how they interact to frame the national project of the Chinese state. By exploring the processes taking place at the ethnic and territorial margins of the Chinese nation-state, the author provides a new perspective on China’s national modernisation project, clarifying the processes occurring across national boundaries and illustrating how China has negotiated the basis for belonging to its national project under the challenge to modernise amid both domestic and global transformations. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Asian politics, Chinese politics, nationalism, transnationalism and regionalism.

Download or read book Race and Nation written by Paul Spickard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-08 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race and Nation is the first book to compare the racial and ethnic systems that have developed around the world. It is the creation of nineteen scholars who are experts on locations as far-flung as China, Jamaica, Eritrea, Brazil, Germany, Punjab, and South Africa. The contributing historians, sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, and scholars of literary and cultural studies have engaged in an ongoing conversation, honing a common set of questions that dig to the heart of racial and ethnic groups and systems. Guided by those questions, they have created the first book that explores the similarities, differences, and the relationships among the ways that race and ethnicity have worked in the modern world. In so doing they have created a model for how to write world history that is detailed in its expertise, yet also manages broad comparisons.
Book Synopsis Industrialization and Assimilation by : Elliott Daniel Green

Book excerpt: "Industrialization and Assimilation is among the first books to focus on the process of ethnic identity change in a broad context. Green's evidence causally explains how and why ethnicity changes across time, showing that, by altering the basis of economic production from land to labor and removing people from the "idiocy of rural life," industrialization is a powerful agent for making societies more ethnically homogenous. More specifically, the author argues that industrialization lowers the relative value of rural land, leading people to identify less with narrow rural identities in favor of broader identities that can aid them navigate the formal urban economy. Using case studies ranging from mid-20th century Turkey to contemporary Botswana, Somalia, and Uganda, as well as examples of Native Americans in the United States and the Māori in New Zealand, both quantitative and qualitative methods are used to establish the relationship between industrialization and ethnic homogenization"--
