Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Dichotomies examines literary texts, cultural production, and concrete local practices within the context of modernity and globalization by focusing on the ways in which some societies confront the complexity of cultures reflected in new forms of knowledge, narratives, and subjectivities. The contributors explore how particular societies negotiate the relations between the global and the local, and use a geographical, comparative perspective combined with an interdisciplinary approach to offer a diversity of views and illuminate the cultural impact of globalization on different societies around the world: Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. These societies face complex questions regarding people's histories, identities, and cultures that embody the ambivalence, contradictions, and anxieties generated by the process of globalization. The contributors provide a compelling conclusion for a rethinking and reconfiguration of cultures and intercultural relations in today's global world in which dichotomized representations coexist with a discourse of globalization.
Book Synopsis Planetary Longings by : Mary Louise Pratt
Download or read book Planetary Longings written by Mary Louise Pratt and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Planetary Longings eminent cultural theorist Mary Louise Pratt posits that the last decade of the twentieth century and the first decades of the twenty-first mark a turning point in the human and planetary condition. Examining the forces of modernity, neoliberalism, coloniality, and indigeneity in their pre- and postmillennial forms, Pratt reflects on the crisis of futurity that accompanies the millennial turn in relation to environmental disaster and to the new forms of thinking it has catalyzed. She turns to 1990s Latin American vernacular culture, literary fiction, and social movements, which simultaneously registered neoliberalism’s devastating effects and pursued alternate ways of knowing and living. Tracing the workings of colonialism alongside the history of anticolonial struggles and Indigenous mobilizations in the Americas, Pratt analyzes indigeneity both as a key index of coloniality, neoliberal extraction, and ecological destruction, and as a source for alternative modes of thought and being. Ultimately, Pratt demonstrates that the changes on either side of the millennium have catalyzed new forms of world-making and knowledge-making in the face of an unknowable and catastrophic future.

Book Synopsis The Burden of Modernity by : Carlos J. Alonso
Download or read book The Burden of Modernity written by Carlos J. Alonso and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-09-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a provocative interpretation of cultural discourse in Spanish America. Alonso argues that Spanish American cultural production constituted itself through commitment to what he calls the "narrative of futurity," that is, the uncompromising adoption of modernity. This commitment fueled a rhetorical crisis that followed the embracing of discourses regarded as "modern" in historical and economic circumstance that are themselves the negation of modernity. Through fresh readings of texts by Sarmiento, Mansilla, Quiroga, Vargos Llosa, Garcia Marquez, and others, Alonso tracks this textual dynamic in works from the nineteenth century to the present.

Book Synopsis Modernidad y posmodernidad by : Antonio Hernández Sánchez
Download or read book Modernidad y posmodernidad written by Antonio Hernández Sánchez and published by Univ de Castilla La Mancha. This book was released on 1999 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Latin America Writes Back by : Emil Volek
Download or read book Latin America Writes Back written by Emil Volek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America has been an important basis for theorizing the postmodern condition and has been the site of some of the most significant contributions to postmodern literature. However, discourses about postmodernity have overwhelmingly been constructed by European and American intellectuals. This book is a groundbreaking collection of essays by Latin American scholars on the theories and practices of postmodernity. It provides an important forum for Latin American intellectuals to shape the debates on postmodernity that are based, to a large degree, on their own cultural and political experiences. Gathering together new and classic essays across a wide range of disciplines and perspectives, this much-needed collection allows some of Latin America's leading cultural critics to write back to their Euro-American counterparts and join the international debate.

Book Synopsis The Dilemmas of Social Democracies by : Howard Richards
Download or read book The Dilemmas of Social Democracies written by Howard Richards and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dilemmas of Social Democracies seeks to advance the eradication of poverty and the ethical construction of social democracy and sustainable peace. Howard Richards and Joanna Swanger argue that the reason that capitalism resists transformation and that social democracy is so hard to achieve is because of the philosophical and institutional underpinnings-the constitutive rules-of capitalism; the book therefore explores the historical origins of these rules, their implications for blocking progress toward social justice, and how they can be improved.
