Book excerpt: The development of new techniques such as immuno phenotyping, cytogenetic investigations and, more recently, molecular studies has considerably increased our diagnostic repertoire and broadened our ideas about the biology of acute leukemias. While immunophenotyping with mono clonal antibodies has yielded increased diagnostic precision and made it possible to develop a highly reproducible classification of acute leukemias based on cell-biological features, further insights have been gained into the patho genetic mechanisms involved in leukemogenesis by means of cytogenetic detection of acquired structural chromosomal abnormalities. Analysis of the leukemia-associated chromo somal breakpoints using molecular techniques can now pinpoint many genomic sites essential for normal develop ment and maturation of hematopoietic cells but functionally disrupted in leukemic cells. The main goal of the international workshop that we held in Berlin with a select group of scientists and clinicians involved in leukemia research was to describe the state of the art and new developments in the immunologic, cytogenetic, and molecular characterization of acute leukemias and to discuss the clinical importance of cell biological features. After introductory survey lectures dealing with the immunological and molecular-biological characteristics of normal vs. malignant lymphatic and myeloid progenitor cells, the workshop centered on con tributions characterizing the immunophenotype and both numerical and structural chromosomal abnormalities in acute leukemias.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the attention presently paid to leukemia is the result of recent progress in understanding and treatment. Chemotherapy of leukemia started in the late 1940s, and combination therapy evolved in the late 1950s. It was at that time that the clonality of leukemia was realized, after the discovery of chromosomal and then biochemical and immunological markers. And now we have the new data on retroviral and cellular oncogenes and the reports on human T -cell lymphoma/ leukemia viruses. Many more steps forward could be enumerated in a field which is so rapidly making the hematological textbooks outdated. In this volume, thirteen in-depth reviews from large multicenter trials in the Federal Republic of Germany summarize the current state of diagnosis and management of leukemias. Childhood ALL and AML adult ALL and AUL were investigated. While cure appears to be achievable for more and more patients with acute leukemia, we still pursue the aim of optimal palliation in chronic leukemias. The management of patients with leukemia therefore varies to a large extent in aggressiveness of therapy. In some situations, rescue from an otherwise lethal disease is provided by bone marrow transplanta tion, which is discussed in two chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology textbooks and books on the history of science generally give a limited picture of the roles women have played in the growth and development of the biological sciences, mentioning primarily the Nobel laureates. This book provides a definitive archival collection of essays on a larger group of women, profiling both their work and their lives. The volume includes 65 representative women from different countries and eras, and from as many branches of biological investigation as possible. In addition to biographical information and an evaluation of the woman's career and significance, each entry provides a full bibliographic listing of works by and about the subject. The volume includes entries on women who have gained recognition through attainment of advanced degrees despite familial and societal pressures, innovative research results, influence exerted in teaching and guidance of students, active participation and leadership in professional societies, extensive scholarly publication, participation on journal editorial boards, extensive field experience, and influence on public and political scientific policymaking. A woman was considered eligible for inclusion if she met several of these criteria. Providing a historical perspective, the book is limited to women who were born before 1930 or are deceased.

Book excerpt: Acquisition of new knowledge about the biological and bio chemical nature of neoplastic cells has led to the design and development of several experimental approaches in the tre&tment of cancer. These approaches emerge from the recent work in tu mor virology, e. g. the control of vital cellular genes by viral regulatory signals; the implication of monoclonal antibodies as a vehicle for the targeted drug delivery and selective de struction of tumor cells; immunologic advances in the recog nition of some specific events during metastatic growth; the role of biological response modifiers in modifying or rever sing malignant growth; and biochemical advances, such as the role of gene amplification in drug resistance and the app roaches to the reversal of resistance in drug refractory cancer, the role of membranes in designing useful strategies, the identification of new enzymic targets in some types of cancer cells, and the characterization of metabolically active forms of cytostatic compounds. These are the important issues which were addressed in an international NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) attended by scientists from allover the world representing a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines. Although the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is not a malignant disease, but the etiological involvement of a retrovirus belonging to the family of human T-cell lympho tropic viruses which cause leukemia and lymphomas in man, justifies its inclusion in the agenda of this Study Institute. Scientific presentations from Drs.
