Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theatres and Auditoriums: Progressive Architecture Library This book treats auditoriums almost exclusively as parts of theatres. This treatment is warranted on the ground that an auditorium almost never succeeds in remaining only an auditorium. Sooner or later somebody uses it for a theatre. Its efficiency as a theatre is very often the measure of its usefulness, for the purely auditorium function will seldom pay for or support a building. We have avoided setting up detailed and precise specifications for a good theatre. We have however endeavored to set forth the methods by which specifications may be developed, and have listed essential considera tions, to the end that no important aspect of planning any element of the theatre shall be slighted. We have been encouraged in this work by the everready counsel and assistance of the people of theatre, of our clients, of architects, and the people of many crafts and professions concerned with theatre building and operation, and by Jeff Livingstone who is the kind of an editor every author wants to work with. We acknowledge in particular the constant affection, encouragement and-patience of our wives, Alice Cole and Anita Burris Meyer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ventilation of the Madison Square Theatre: With Illustrations The management of the most elegant and perfectly arranged theatre in this city, being desirous to have it per fectly ventilated, made a special study of the subject, and called into their counsels persons who had also given the subject great consideration or had large experience therein. Theatres, owing to their requirements and special construe tion, present greater difficulties in ventilation than any other class of buildings, hence the favorable outcome of the experiments made become of greater importance and value than if they had been made in a building not so imperative in its requirements, nor presenting such difficulties. Theatre managers, stage designers, devotees of the drama, actors, drama tists, and University professors recognize its presence. It is to be noted, too, that no apology is being offered for the better sort of contem porary One-act plays. As a matter of fact, none is needed. They justify themselves as worth-while studies of human life and human character. Without adequate first-hand ac quaintance with the fundamentals of life, they cannot be written any more than can the three act form. The One - act play is no longer to be dismissed with a careless wave of the hand. It has come to be a fact in contemporary dra matic expression. Book excerpt: More than 100 years after the first movie delighted audiences, movie theaters remain the last great community centers and one of the few amusements any family can afford. While countless books have been devoted to films and their stars, none have attempted a truly definitive history of those magical venues that have transported moviegoers since the beginning of the last century. In this stunningly illustrated book, film industry insiders Ross Melnick and Andreas Fuchs take readers from the nickelodeon to the megaplex and show how changes in moviemaking and political, social, and technological forces (e.g., war, depression, the baby boom, the VCR) have influenced the way we see movies.Archival photographs from archives like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and movie theater ephemera (postcards, period ads, matchbooks, and even a "barf bag") sourced from private collections complement Melnick's informative and engaging history. Also included throughout the book are Fuchs' profiles detailing 25 classic movie theaters that have been restored and renovated and which continue to operate today. Each of these two-page spreads is illustrated with marvelous modern photographs, many taken by top architectural photographers. The result is a fabulous look at one way in which Americans continue to come together as a nation. A timeline throughout places the developments described in a broader historical context."We've had a number of beautiful books about the great movie palaces, and even some individual volumes that pay tribute to surviving theaters around the country. This is the first book I can recall that focuses on the survivors, from coast to coast, and puts them into historical context. Sumptuously produced in an oversized format, on heavy coated paper stock, this beautiful book offers a lively history of movie theaters in America , an impressive array of photos and memorabilia, and a heartening survey of the landmarks in our midst, from the majestic Fox Tucson Theatre in Tucson, Arizona to the charming jewel-box that is the Avon in Stamford, Connecticut. I don't know why, but I never tire of gazing at black & white photos of marquees from the past; they evoke the era of moviemaking (and moviegoing) I care about the most, and this book is packed with them. Cinema Treasures is indeed a treasure, and a perfect gift item for the holiday season. - Leonard Maltin"Humble or grandiose, stand-alone or strung together, movie theaters are places where dreams are born. Once upon a time, they were treated with the respect they deserve. In their heyday, historian Ross Melnick and exhibitor Andreas Fuchs write in Cinema Treasures, openings of new motion-picture pleasure palaces that would have dazzled Kubla Khan 'received enormous attention in newspapers around the country. On top of the publicity they generated, their debuts were treated like the gala openings of new operas or exhibits, with critics weighing in on everything from the interior and exterior design to the orchestra.' Handsomely produced and extensively illustrated, Cinema Treasures is detailed without being dull and thoroughly at home with this often neglected subject matter. Its title would have you believe it is a celebration of the golden age of movie theaters. But this book is something completely different: an examination of the history of movie exhibition, which the authors accurately call 'a vastly under-researched topic.'" - Los Angeles Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Theater: Evolution and Design marks an unprecedented attempt to trace the evolution and style of theater architecture from its very beginnings to the present and to provide a methodology for modern theater design. Emphasizing that today's theaters are the inevitable result of older traditions and are themselves part of ongoing heritage, It defines the social, aesthetic, philosophic, and political components that have shaped 20th-century Theater forms and, from that point, identifies contemporary architectural trends for the theater. Contemporary Theater consists of four main sections, which follow chronologically signifying distinct periods in the evolution of the theater: Evolutionary Problems Up to the 20th Century - discusses instinctive theater in primitive tribes and Egypt; The Golden Age of Greece, the Roman Empire; Middle Ages up to 19th-century Romanticism and Realism. 20th-Century Theater - examines the relation of 19th to 20th-century theater; the impact of social upheavals; World War I; new movements and trends in theater architecture, scenography and stagecraft; the "golden age of theater"; new technology; the emergence of Appia, Graig, Reinhardt, Piscator, Gropius, and the Bauhaus School.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Buildings, Their Planning, Construction and Equipment, Vol. 6: Part I. Miscellaneous Buildings and Their Fittings; Part II. Builders Plant and Scaffolding; Part III. South African Planning and Construction Index In many theatres oil lamps are also kept in store, but these must be of the colza oil pattern, burning heavy oils, the highly inflammable mineral oils being inad missible. The greatest danger of fire exists in the use of naked gas lights, in order to produce special effects upon the stage, in close proximity to flimsy curtains and oil-painted canvas, the head-lights and foot-lights which are in view of the audience causing comparatively little danger. It is now usual for all these to be electric, but additional gas burners are generally provided along the front of the stage, or proscenium opening, as it is called, both at top and bottom, and occasionally standards of gas burners are still to be found in the wings, though careful managers avoid them. Possibly an understanding of the general principles of theatre planning will be best obtained by considering one well-designed example, and that of the Garrick Theatre, planned by Mr. Walter Emden, has been selected, as, although small, it illustrates all the prin cipal points (see Fig. It is placed on an awkwardly shaped piece of land, but is so contrived as to be almost entirely isolated, the only portion which adjoins other buildings being at the back of the stage, where it is cut Off from all else by a thick brick wall. The dressing rooms occur in a detached building, which communicates with the main building only by a subway, this rare arrangement being rendered possible by the peculiar shape of the land, whose awkwardness was thus very cleverly brought into use. Thus in this case the theatre consists of three distinct buildings, - the auditorium, the stage, and the dressing-rooms, which may very well be considered separately.
