Excerpt: ...of the general design is shown in Fig. 47. The high-pressure cylinder bore has been increased i in., making it 4 in., and the low-pressure also increased A in., making it 6 in. bore. The same length of stroke, viz. 6 in., is retained. The ratios of gearing between the engine and road wheels are 19'4 and 11 to 1, giving speeds of 2 9 and 5-1 miles per hour with engine running at its normal speed of 450 revolutions per minute. Fig. 48 shows a plan of the engine and gearing. The valves are of the flat balanced pattern working on renewable faces. Unlike the smaller wagon before described, the second-motion shaft gearing runs loosely when the combined sliding clutch and pinion is out of gear with the spur wheel. The second-motion shaft is in reality a fixed steel tube with the clutch operating rod working in the hollow. The compensating shaft is clearly shown in Fig. 49. It will be noticed that the main bearings are non-adjustable. The third axle consists of a "Mannesman " tube with practically solid ends. The rear axle has bearings 11 in. long and 3 i in. in diameter, the diameter of the axle beyond the bearings being 4 in. The boiler, brakes, and steering gear are the same design as on the smaller wagon. The driving wheels are 3 ft. 6 in. diameter by 10 in. face, and the steering wheels are 3 ft. diameter by 6 in. face. Book Synopsis Steam Traction on the Road by : Anthony Burton
Download or read book Steam Traction on the Road written by Anthony Burton and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of how for more than a hundred years steam power played a vital role in the development of road transport. It all began with tentative attempts to build steam carriages by pioneers such as Cugnot in France and Trevithick in Britain, and in the early part of the nineteenth century there were significant attempts to develop steam carriages and omnibuses. That these attempts ultimately failed was largely due to opposition by road authorities and draconian legislation. Steam power did, however, find a real purpose in agriculture, where the traction engine was used for a variety of tasks from towing and working threshing machines, to ploughing. Once the value of the traction engine had been established, it soon found a use in many parts of the world for heavy haulage work and appeared in an exotic guise as the showman's engine. The latter was not only used to haul rides to fairgrounds but also powered a dynamo that could light up the fair at night. By the end of the nineteenth century, steam on the road took on a new life with the development of steam cars and trucks. For a time they vied the new internal combustion engine for supremacy on the road. The American Doble Company even developed a 100mph steam sports car. Ultimately steam lost the war, but steam vehicles survive and delight us still thanks to enthusiastic owners and restorers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Steam Road Wagons Care has been taken to include in this book particulars of the latest, and - by reason of the 1905 Board of Trade Regulations - important modifications and designs of heavy steam road wagons; and to give an accurate and impartial analytical account of past and present practice. With this object, illustrations and drawings necessary to explain the text are extensively made use of; and it is hoped that the publication may serve a purpose alike useful to manufacturers and users - present or prospective - as an intelligent aid to manufacturers to design and as a medium for users to enable them to select the best possible vehicles to fit their particular requirements. Particular attention has been devoted to constructional details to show what has been attempted in the past, the shortcomings which experience manifested, and how and what improvements have, from time to time, been made to overcome, one by one, the difficulties and deficiencies as they arose. The majority of the outline technical drawings have been made under the author's own supervision and are new, and it is to be hoped will be found serviceable to the end he has in view. This is the first publication which has in any way attempted to deal exclusively with the subject of heavy steam motor wagons.
