Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrei Znamenski argues that socialism arose out of activities of secularized apocalyptic sects, the Enlightenment tradition, and dislocations produced by the Industrial Revolution. He examines how, by the 1850s, Marx and Engels made the socialist creed “scientific” by linking it to “history laws” and inventing the proletariat—the “chosen people” that were to redeem the world from oppression. Focusing on the fractions between social democracy and communism, Znamenski explores why, historically, socialism became associated with social engineering and centralized planning. He explains the rise of the New Left in the 1960s and its role in fostering the cultural left that came to privilege race and identity over class. Exploring the global retreat of the left in the 1980s–1990s and the “great neoliberalism scare,” Znamenski also analyzes the subsequent renaissance of socialism in wake of the 2007–2008 crisis.

Biographical vignettes enliven the presentation of ideas, and references to studies of regional diversities . . . give the narrative an uncommonly rich texture. . . . Lucid and illuminating. . . . It is the best book on the subject to put into the hands of our students.--Helmut Gruber, International Labor and Working Class History A synthetic narrative by a young academic scholar . . . who has independent ideas on an important subject. . . . This book is worth reading if for no other reason than its modest, but nonpatronizing rehabilitation from generations of Marxist caricature of a host of deeply democratic European socialists.--James H. Billington, Washington Post Book World One asset of this book is its lack of the overbearing personal partisanship one finds in so many historical studies of socialism. . . . [Lindeman incorporates] some recent and inaccessible studies in social history written 'from the bottom up.'--David D'Arcy, World View As a whole, Lindemann offers a more balanced treatment of the ideas and the movement of socialism than found in many extant histories. . . . A must for all college and university libraries.--Choice A competent and fair-minded study of a controversial subject. It presents much factual material and judicious interpretation in lucid prose.--L. S. Stavrianos, Los Angeles Times Book Review

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Socialism: In Its Historical Development The Socialistic literature notwithstanding its vastness opens to view a gap, the almost total absence of a systematic, scientifically objective and critical investigation of what constitutes the doctrine of modern Socialism. Schaeffle sfamous book Quintessence of Socialism exhibits to a certain extent such a tendency but lacks every historical illustration and bears more or less a dogmatical stamp. This work, as well as Menger sNew State Doctrine are besides mere expositions of a part of the general doctrine of Socialism as they interpret only its positive side. Bourguin sContemporary Socialist Systems, one of the latest researches in this province, is to my mind far from fulfilling the void 1 have pointed out, being in a con-1siderable measure but an unconvincing attempt to confute Socialism as a positive doctrine.; Many good writings on Socialism have of late been published. It will suffice to mention Sombart swell-known book Socialism and the Socialist Movement during the Nineteenth Century which also belongs to that class of writings, the-- -4 . Excerpt: ... methods of socialist activity, and through their ceaseless agitation they prepared the ground for a genuine American movement of socialism. The party had the misfortune of surviving the period of its usefulness, and its remnants brought in a shrill note of dissonance in the movement, but that does not alter the fact that the men of the Socialist Labor Party did the pioneer work of modern socialism in this country, and that the present socialist movement owes its existence largely to their efforts. II.--CAREER OF THE SOCIALIST LABOR PARTY 1. Early Tr1umphs And Reverses The Socialist Labor Party commenced its career under rather favorable auspices. The extraordinary industrial activity which had developed after the close of the war was succeeded by the great financial panic of 1873. The acute stage of the panic subsided after a few months, but the financial depression continued for fully five years and caused an unprecedented degree of destitution among the population of the country. In the great industrial cities cases of death from starvation, not only of single individuals but of entire families, were reported by the police every week. During the winter of 1877, the police stations were filled every night with crowds of working men and their families seeking shelter from the cold of the streets, and the police courts were besieged by men, women, and children imploring to be committed to the workhouse. The number of the unemployed in the United States was estimated at no less than three millions. At the same time the wages of those who had employment were reduced from year to year, and in 1877 they were so low that the working men rebelled, and a series of strikes was inaugurated. The movement was quite spontaneous; it was an outbreak of...

The biographical portraits of the individuals chosen in this study provide insight into important issues in socialist history. These contrasting studies of twenty prominent socialistsómajor thinkers and important activists or agitatorsóilluminate particular problems in the historical evolution of socialism.
