This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education encompasses curricula, institutions and infrastructure and is the foundation of human development. The UAE has long recognized the importance of bringing education to the forefront of development plans, with the aim of creating a diverse and competitive economy based on improving the efficiency and quality of educational output. These development plans include the UAE Vision 2021, the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, and the Dubai Strategic Vision 2015. A forward-looking vision of education in the UAE entails a number of issues including recognition of the fact that the application of international experiences to UAE educational institutions will not necessarily provide the same results. Researchers have drawn attention to the need for inspiration from the country’s heritage of Islamic civilization and social values when formulating educational policy. To accomplish the objectives of these important development plans, all parties involved in the education process must be aware of what is required and speak with one voice. Therefore, the First Annual Education Conference of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), "Education in the UAE: Current Status and Future Developments," was held on 5–6 October, 2010, in order to respond to various challenges of educational advancement on which the success of the country’s goals over the coming decades depends. Such challenges include not only diversifying the student population, schools and curricula; improving the quality of the school environment; overcoming the limitations of traditional methods of education; creating effective approaches to development, evaluation and assessment; improving educational guidance for students; and achieving greater family involvement in the educational process in order to promote high levels of educational attainment, but also self-confidence, a strong sense of citizenship and a culture of moderation and tolerance. To this end, the UAE Ministry of Education has devised a ten-year strategic plan that aims to reform the education sector and raise student attainment by providing an environment conducive to educational excellence; promoting equal educational opportunities; strengthening nationals’ sense of citizenship; and improving administrative efficiency.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the proceedings of the Second Annual Education Conference of the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), entitled “Essentials of School Education in the United Arab Emirates” held on October 3–4, 2011. The Second Annual Education Conference tackled the essentials of school education in the UAE through the examination of various issues including the role of national policies and legislation in developing education systems; the relationship between Emirati society and the education process; domestic and international pedagogical philosophies; fundamentals of teacher training and student development; curricula reform; the role of technology in the advancement of education; and fundamentals necessary to ensure standards of educational excellence in the UAE. This Conference came as a continuation of the vision adopted by the ECSSR that seeks to raise the quality of education, examine future developments and identify obstacles that may impede educational progress in the country. In addition to organizing past seminars, panel sessions and lectures that dealt with educational issues and publishing material on the subject, the ECSSR has formed a strategic outlook specifically for education in the UAE, and the Arabian Gulf region in general, and has undertaken the responsibility of tackling all issues and problems related to this topic. This strategic outlook for education adopted by the ECSSR is inspired by the leadership in the country, which considers advancing education as the engine of national development and seeks to raise the standard of education in the country to be among the five most advanced educational systems in the world. Therefore, the advancement of education, in quantity and quality, has been at the forefront of development in the country in recognition of it being the key to the knowledge economy and guarantees national progress. In addition, the various strategic development plans drafted by the government depend almost completely on the quality of national education in the coming decades. The sessions of this Conference and the ensuing discussions and comments compiled in this book have highlighted the importance of research and development related to education—a role that the ECSSR proudly undertakes through its unique events, seminars and lectures attended by some of the best minds in the world of education.

Book excerpt: The British withdrawal from the Gulf in 1971 brought to an end the British Imperial era in the history of the Trucial States and marked the birth of the United Arab Emirates. This book, first published in 1978, establishes the political, social, economic and cultural heritage of the UAE and explains the formative issues in the development of the new state. From 1892 to 1971 the history of the Gulf was determined by the British presence. Initially the region was regarded by the British as no more than a part of the strategic defence of India, but by 1945 oil and international air communication had given the region a new strategic importance. This volume examines both the early India Office policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of the region and the circumstances after 1947 which prompted the Foreign Office to interfere in certain internal issues. The second half of the book seeks to explain the development of Arab nationalism, the growth of Iranian activities and the relations of the Trucial States with their Western neighbours, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The last chapter provides an historical explanation for the present interstate boundaries and political geography of the region.

The languages under the scope of this handbook are identified by the contributors as immigrant languages, indigenous, endangered, heritage, regional, minority, majority, and marginalized, as well as foreign and second languages, all of which are discussed in relation to early language education as the key concept of the handbook. Book excerpt: This book, which includes a number of research papers presented at the 6th Annual Education Conference held at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) from October 27-28, 2015, seeks to provide a comprehensive vision of the educational process in relation to development. It presents a host of useful ideas that contribute to entrenching the positive link between the requirements of education and the requirements of development in the United Arab Emirates. Through the interrelationship between innovation and skill, on the one hand, and academic cognitive content, on the other, the UAE educational system is counting on graduating nationals who are efficient, positive and able to be harmonious and flexible in dealing with the latest technological requirements and challenges of the labor market. The book’s chapters highlight the importance of communication between scientific research and the public and private sectors to serve the comprehensive development, both physically and culturally. The book also discusses the important role of vocational education and training at the level of disciplines, curricula and qualification programs, while promoting the adoption of state-of-the-art technologies to enhance the competitiveness of graduates when they join the labor market and to motivate them to engage in private sector projects.

Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume do not represent the whole of the Middle East and North Africa, as such a collection would have been too large for one volume. Rather, the selection here is intended to present different perspectives on a range of educational issues, relevant to a particular focus or country, or common to a number of countries in the area. There is no overarching theme beyond that which is common to most of the countries in this area; such as modernity versus tradition; the spread of education effecting sociological changes - most pronounced in the rural and tribal areas; the changing fortunes and roles of women; the aspiration and expectation of youth; and the state having become the major player in providing education. These are all shared by most of the countries represented here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Gulf Arab States comes at a time when the world's attention is riveted on the Middle East. The small states covered in this volume_Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)_possess about 20 percent of the world's total oil reserves. Beyond the strategic and economic importance conferred upon them by their vast oil reserves, the Gulf Arab states are worthy of attention for the inherent interest of their history and culture. No area of the world has yielded more revealing and exciting archaeological finds in the past few decades than these states. Investigations have brought to light extensive evidence of an important culture as old as Egypt of the Pharaohs or ancient Babylon, which was virtually unknown previously except through rare references in the records of other civilizations. This expanded second edition covers the history of the five countries through a chronology broken down by country, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and several hundred cross-referenced dictionary entries on important persons, places, and events of each country. Everything from the Abbasids to Zubarah is covered in this essential reference on this increasingly important region of the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Sponsored by the Middle Level Education Research Special Interest Group and the National Middle School Association) Studies like the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) have compared the performance of U.S. middle grade students (i.e., eighth graders) to those in other countries. In relation to middle grade schools, 20 countries outperformed the United States in mathematics and nine countries scored above the U.S. in science. The intent of this volume of The Handbook of Research in Middle Level Education, An International Look at Educating Young Adolescents, is to broaden our understanding of middle grade schooling by critically examining the education of young adolescents (ages 10-15, typically grades 6-8) through an international lens. In addition to looking at how schooling and students are organized for teaching and learning, this handbook will focus on the successes and failures that are evident in a wide variety of nations, present the indictments and praises that have been offered by supporters and critics alike, and review the research that has been generated about educating young adolescents in an effort to cross national boundaries. Ultimately, this volume of the handbook series will explore what international perspectives teach us about the effective education of young adolescents.

Book excerpt: This edited volume contributes a novel understanding of the past, present and future of higher education across the six countries that make up the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Against the backdrop of intense political, ideological and epistemological disruptions across the Arabian Gulf Region over the last two decades, this volume adopts critical comparative perspectives in order to chart the history, present-day and future realities of higher education in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait. By focusing on dynamics relating to neoliberalism, and using the notions of ‘tensionality’ and ‘locality’ to situate topics such as curricula, policies, practices, the volume engages with current discourses, controversies and themes such as the internationalization and marketization of higher education in these countries. In doing so, the book offers a theoretical framework to enable greater understanding of the contemporary functioning of higher education in the Arabian Gulf Region. This text will benefit scholars, academics and students in the fields of higher education and international and comparative education more broadly. Those involved with educational policy and politics, and Middle Eastern studies in general, will also benefit from this volume.
