Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Philology, Vol. 6: 1908-1909 It is with great regret that we announce that Mr. Allen has felt himself obliged by the demands of other duties to retire from the position of managing editor of Modern Philology. AS is doubtless well known to most of our readers the establishment of the journal was due to his energy and enthusiasm, and during the five years of its history he has borne by far the largest part of the labor and responsibility connected with it. NO one who has read the five volumes produced under Mr. Allen's supervision can, we believe, fail to recognize and be grateful for the high standard of scholarship which has been maintained in them and the eagerness with which good work has been welcomed from every quarter. This fine achievement has been made possible for him and his coeditors by the hearty co-operation of the contributors and by the constant and ungrudging assistance of the members of the Advisory Board, all of whom will surely join us in the regret that other duties have made it necessary for Mr. Allen to withdraw from the Official relation to them and us which has so happily existed for these five years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Philology, Vol. 18: 1920-1921 Although Professor Manly has shown that the richard-anne theory is untenable, and has discussed the contradictions and absurdities involved in trying to date and motivate the poem on this basis, the later articles of Emerson1 and Lange make further attack necessary. In this paper I shall try to add to the argument that the Richard Anne theory must be discarded by showing that (1) it does not explain Chaucer's divergence from the demande d'amours type or the inconclusive ending; (2) it does not explain the interweaving of satire - a bird House of Commons - with the love story; (3) it is not at present supported by historical evidence. Download or read book Philology written by James Turner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prehistory of today's humanities, from ancient Greece to the early twentieth century Many today do not recognize the word, but "philology" was for centuries nearly synonymous with humanistic intellectual life, encompassing not only the study of Greek and Roman literature and the Bible but also all other studies of language and literature, as well as history, culture, art, and more. In short, philology was the queen of the human sciences. How did it become little more than an archaic word? In Philology, the first history of Western humanistic learning as a connected whole ever published in English, James Turner tells the fascinating, forgotten story of how the study of languages and texts led to the modern humanities and the modern university. The humanities today face a crisis of relevance, if not of meaning and purpose. Understanding their common origins—and what they still share—has never been more urgent.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Philology, Vol. 15: 1917-1918 When in the House of Fame Chaucer turns his eyes from the "feminyne creature" who capriciously awards to men their meed of praise or blame, he sees on either side of her dais a series of metal pillars on which stand the great writers of the past who, by their writings, have helped to perpetuate fame. First among pagan writers stands the "Tholosan that highte Stace," And by him stood, withouten lees, Ful wonder hye on a pileer Of yren, he, the gret Omeer; And with him Dares and Tytus [i.e., Dictys] Before, and eek he, Lollius, And Guido eek de Columpnis, And English Gaufride eek, ywis; And ech of these, as have I joye, Was besy for to here up Troye. [Fame, 1464-72.] Of these "bearers-up of Troy" it is the second in the list, Dares, who concerns us at present. Dares, mentioned by Homer (Iliad v. 9) as a priest of Hephaestus, is the reputed author of an "eyewitness" history of the Trojan War written in Greek. An utterry uninspired work which bears the title Daretis Phrygii de Excidio Troiae Historia purports to be a Latin translation of this Greek work made by Cornelius Nepos. Download or read book Modern Philology, Vol. 1 written by Philip S. Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Philology, Vol. 1: 1903-1904 In a well-known passage in the Prologue to the Legend of Good Women, Chaucer professes absolute neutrality in a sentimental debate which was amusing the leisure of high society in England: For trusteth wel, I ne have not undertake As of the Leef ageyn the Flour to make, Ne of the Flour to make ageyn the Leef, No more than of the corn ageyn the sheef. For, as to me, is leefer non ne lother; I am withholde yit with never nother. I not who serveth Leef, ne who the Flour, That nis nothing the entent of my labour. For this work is al of another tunne, Of olde story, er swych stryf was begunne. This is one of Chaucer's characteristic disclaimers, and must not be taken too literally. Very likely he had not joined either the Order of the Flower or that of the Leaf, but we are not to suppose that he did not even know which of his aristocratic friends belonged to one faction and which to the other. We are reminded of the solemnity with which he protests, in the Troilus, that he is a mere outsider in all the affairs of love. The lines just quoted are good historical material. Book Synopsis The World According to Color by : James Fox
Download or read book The World According to Color written by James Fox and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A kaleidoscopic exploration that traverses history, literature, art, and science to reveal humans' unique and vibrant relationship with color. We have an extraordinary connection to color—we give it meanings, associations, and properties that last millennia and span cultures, continents, and languages. In The World According to Color, James Fox takes seven elemental colors—black, red, yellow, blue, white, purple, and green—and uncovers behind each a root idea, based on visual resemblances and common symbolism throughout history. Through a series of stories and vignettes, the book then traces these meanings to show how they morphed and multiplied and, ultimately, how they reveal a great deal about the societies that produced them: reflecting and shaping their hopes, fears, prejudices, and preoccupations. Fox also examines the science of how our eyes and brains interpret light and color, and shows how this is inherently linked with the meanings we give to hue. And using his background as an art historian, he explores many of the milestones in the history of art—from Bronze Age gold-work to Turner, Titian to Yves Klein—in a fresh way. Fox also weaves in literature, philosophy, cinema, archaeology, and art—moving from Monet to Marco Polo, early Japanese ink artists to Shakespeare and Goethe to James Bond. By creating a new history of color, Fox reveals a new story about humans and our place in the universe: second only to language, color is the greatest carrier of cultural meaning in our world.
