Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to the Operational Calculus is a translation of "Einfuhrung in die Operatorenrechnung, Second Edition." This book deals with Heaviside's interpretation, on the Laplace integral, and on Jan Mikusinki's fundamental work "Operational Calculus." Throughout the book, basic algebraic concepts appear as aids to understanding some relevant points of the subject. An important field for research in analysis is asymptotic properties. This text also discusses examples to show the potentialities in applying operational calculus that run beyond ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients. In using operational calculus to solve more complicated problems than those of ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients, the concept of convergence assumes a significant role in the field of operators. This book also extends the Laplace transformation and applies it to non-transformable functions. This text also present three methods in which operational calculus can be modified and become useful in solving specific ranges of problems. These methods pertain to the finite Laplace transformation, to partial differential equations, and to the Volterra integral equations and ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients. This book can prove valuable for mathematicians, students, and professor of calculus and advanced mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of an article by G. DoETSCH in 1927 it has been known that the Laplace transform procedure is a reliable sub stitute for HEAVISIDE's operational calculus*. However, the Laplace transform procedure is unsatisfactory from several viewpoints (some of these will be mentioned in this preface); the most obvious defect: the procedure cannot be applied to functions of rapid growth (such as the 2 function tr-+-exp(t)). In 1949 JAN MIKUSINSKI indicated how the un necessary restrictions required by the Laplace transform can be avoided by a direct approach, thereby gaining in notational as well as conceptual simplicity; this approach is carefully described in MIKUSINSKI's textbook "Operational Calculus" [M 1]. The aims of the present book are the same as MIKUSINSKI's [M 1]: a direct approach requiring no un-necessary restrictions. The present operational calculus is essentially equivalent to the "calcul symbolique" of distributions having left-bounded support (see 6.52 below and pp. 171 to 180 of the textbook "Theorie des distributions" by LAURENT SCHWARTZ).

It is an attempt, between the serious and facetious, of conveying the idea that a mathematical thought is the result of different experiences, geographical and social factors. Even though it is not clear when Mathematics had started, it is evident that it had been used at an early stage of human history and by ancient Babylonians and Egyptians who have already developed a sophisticated corpus of mathematical items, which were the workhorse tools in engineering, navigation, trades and astronomy. The book sweeps across the mathematical minds of the Greek and Arab traditions, concepts by Assyro-Babylonians, and ancient Indian Vedic culture. The mathematical mind has modeled the evolution of societies and has been modeled by it. It is now in the midst of a great revolution and it is not clear where it will bring us. The current new epoch needs new mathematical tools and, above this, a new way of looking at Mathematics. This book tells the tale of what went on and what might go on.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oliver Heaviside's electromagnetic investigations - from the publication of his first electrical paper in 1972 to the public recognition awarded to him by Lord Kelvin in 1889 - have consistently attracted attention over the years, and of late have become a major source for the study of the development of field theory after Maxwell. "From Obscurity to Enigma" is the only comprehensive, in-depth analysis of Heaviside's work. It analyses and elucidates his brilliant but often close-to-indecipherable Electrical Papers and traces the evolution of his ideas against the background of growing knowledge in basic electromagnetic theory, telegraphy and telephony during these years. The book will be appreciated by historians of science and technology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and by physicists and electrical engineers, many of whom are aware of Heaviside's contributions to their respective fields.

Book excerpt: Asymptotic Methods in the Theory of Plates with Mixed Boundary Conditions comprehensively covers the theoretical background of asymptotic approaches and their use in solving mechanical engineering-oriented problems of structural members, primarily plates (statics and dynamics) with mixed boundary conditions. The first part of this book introduces the theory and application of asymptotic methods and includes a series of approaches that have been omitted or not rigorously treated in the existing literature. These lesser known approaches include the method of summation and construction of the asymptotically equivalent functions, methods of small and large delta, and the homotopy perturbations method. The second part of the book contains original results devoted to the solution of the mixed problems of the theory of plates, including statics, dynamics and stability of the studied objects. In addition, the applicability of the approaches presented to other related linear or nonlinear problems is addressed. Key features: • Includes analytical solving of mixed boundary value problems • Introduces modern asymptotic and summation procedures • Presents asymptotic approaches for nonlinear dynamics of rods, beams and plates • Covers statics, dynamics and stability of plates with mixed boundary conditions • Explains links between the Adomian and homotopy perturbation approaches Asymptotic Methods in the Theory of Plates with Mixed Boundary Conditions is a comprehensive reference for researchers and practitioners working in the field of Mechanics of Solids and Mechanical Engineering, and is also a valuable resource for graduate and postgraduate students from Civil and Mechanical Engineering.

Book excerpt: This major two-volume handbook is an extensively revised, updated second edition of the highly praised Survey of Applicable Mathematics, first published in English in 1969. The thirty-seven chapters cover all the important mathematical fields of use in applications: algebra, geometry, differential and integral calculus, infinite series, orthogonal systems of functions, Fourier series, special functions, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, integral equations, functions of one and several complex variables, conformal mapping, integral transforms, functional analysis, numerical methods in algebra and in algebra and in differential boundary value problems, probability, statistics, stochastic processes, calculus of variations, and linear programming. All proofs have been omitted. However, theorems are carefully formulated, and where considered useful, are commented with explanatory remarks. Many practical examples are given by way of illustration. Each of the two volumes contains an extensive bibliography and a comprehensive index. Together these two volumes represent a survey library of mathematics which is applicable in many fields of science, engineering, economics, etc. For researchers, students and teachers of mathematics and its applications.
