Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Methods of Teaching English in Germany HE following Espart deals with a visit to German schools, extending from January 21 to April 41, 1906, which was made with the object of observing methods of teaching English in that country. The list of schools to be visited was supplied by the English Education Office, who were also good enough to obtain the necessary permit from the German Government. It is not for me here to express any thanks to that Government; this has already been done by the authorities concerned; but I may say on behalf of myself, and no doubt of all Indiaii readers, tint we. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Method of Teaching, Modern Languages in Germany Being the Report Presented to the Trustees of the Gilchrist Educational Trust on a Visit to Germany in 1897, as Gilchrist Travelling Scholar Many teachers and heads of schools were kind enough to grant me special interviews, in which they freely discussed their methods and the leading educational questions of the day. Although my attention was chiefly directed to French and English, I also heard a few good German lessons, two or three interesting Italian ones and two excellent Classical ones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Method and Methods in the Teaching of English To afiect the various motives that may prompt an author to add one more to the many books on methods of teaching that are now available, there seem to be two very good reasons why a new text on the teaching of English may be deemed unnecessary. In the first place, there are a number of excellent discussions of the general phases of the subject and of special branches, which are sound in principle and scholarly in analysis of the material. Secondly, in these days when so much is said in favor of allowing the initiative of the teacher to find full expression, any book which prescribes definite methods of teaching may be said to set itself against the trend of modern theory. Despite these considerations, however, I have long felt that there is a definite need for the kind of treatment of' the subjects connected with the teaching of English in the elementary schools that I have given in this book. There is a real need of specific suggestions as to a rational mode of approaching and' developing the work in English. Teachers are everywhere asking for direc tions which will give them not so much a model for direct imita tion as a basis for intelligent self-criticism. This book aims to present a consistent method of work in all the branches of elemenary English. While drawing freely from the various accepted texts, and adopting without hesitation many valuable suggestions from teachers and writers in all grades of the work, it claims consideration for this original feature: It aims to separate the teaching of technique from the teaching for appreciation and self-expression, and it seeks to found its methods upon a definite psychology of the learning process. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Elementary Course in the German Language: For the Use of Schools One language contains all the general principles of every other. Comparative philology - a new science - is entirely changing the mode of teaching languages. It shows that the true method of acquiring a foreign tongue is by compar ing it with the one already known. The aim of this work is to make a practical application of the recent improvements in this direction. The pupil is supposed to be familiar with the English language. Its grammar being Teutonic or German, no at tempt is made to teach what should properly be studied in the native tongue. The German and English are brought side by side, their differences and affinities compared, and that point taught first which will open to the learner the broadest field. A large majority of the German words may be formed from the English by a regular system of consonant changes. For this reason, the chief study will be the forms of words. The same principle is followed in developing the endings which characterize these words in their relations to each other. The pupil is encumbered as little as possible with minor details and exceptional cases. The illustrations though drawn from the language of real life, are free from colloquial, proverbial or poetical idioms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pronouncing German Reader: To Which Is Added Method of Learning to Read and Understand the German Language, With or Without a Teacher That the learning of a language is a task, a tedious and a difiicult task, will be admitted by all those who have learned, and by those who have taught languages. Great progress has, however, of late been made in the teaching of modern languages; several systems, such as that of Manesca or of Ollendorfi', that of Robertson, have been widely introduced, and have almost driven out the old theoretical system of teaching. But Ollendorfls system, though, according to my opinion, the safest to learn to Speak a language, requires considerable tim0 before the pupil begins to read and understand. I have myself for the last nine years made use of Manesca's and Ollendoriis books, but I have always commenced read ing and translating into English the very first lessons, so that many of my pupils, when they have gone through the first twenty lessons in Ollendorfis Grammar, are able to translate an easy German book by the aid of a dictionary.
