Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Languages, Vol. 2 The reopening of Germany to foreigners will make possible many delayed visits. It would seem appropriate that some of the first travellers should be students and teachers of German, for they, more than most people, will be capable, not only of presenting English views of current international politics, but of learning the trend of public opinion in Germany. In this connection, the interesting communication from Professor Scripture, which will be found on another page, should be of service. The tension which, for some time past, has marked Anglo-French political relations, shows signs of relaxing. We who have no devastated areas, whose sufferings have been so much less terrible than those of the French, have some difficulty in appreciating the French point of view. On the other hand, suffering tends to blind the sufferer to practical considerations. Should the cordiality disappear from the entente, irreparable harm would ensue throughout civilization. Happily the possibility is remote, but those of us who have friends among the French can help to ease the situation considerably by putting more ardour than usual into our relations, and by writing more frequently and at greater length, so proving that, whatever may be the political situation, sympathy between individuals is ever possible. It is hoped that Members of the Association will try to make the Year Book a success; the method to be employed is obvious. The Bibliographies - to mention but one of the many useful features - are indispensable to everyone interested in foreign letters and art. We regret to announce the death of Dr. Aloys Weiss, who, after a long illness, died on November 1 at the age of sixty-nine. He was formerly professor at the R.M.A. at Woolwich, and had been a member of the M.L.A. for twenty-five years. He leaves a widow and son and daughter, to whom we extend our sincere sympathy in their loss. The British School at Rome has awarded the Gilchrist Studentship for 1920 to Mr. O. Keith Struckmeyer, B.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge, who passed first class with distinction in the Italian Tripos at Cambridge in June last. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Notes, Vol. 28 A recent writer dealing with the subject of negro folk-song, its social and psychological antecedents, in the course of his exposition, makes the following statement: "In the 'Downward Road is Crowded, ' a mournful picture is given of the sinner who failed to repent. His example is held up for the contemplation of those who are following in his steps. Young people who delight in sin, I tell you what I lately seen, A po' godless sinner die, And he said, 'In hell I soon'll lie!" Hark, the downward road is crowded, crowded, crowded, Yes, the downward road is crowded with onbelievin' souls. He call his mother to his bed, An' these is the dyin' words he said, 'Mother, mother, I long farewell, Your wicked son is damned in hell.' He dance an' play hisself away, An' still put off his dyin' day, Until at las' ole death was sent, An' it 'us too late fer him to repent." That this is too sophisticated even for a negro preacher, and bears moreover, too certain evidence of a literary origin, seems not to have suggested itself. There is nothing in it of the irregularity of structure and incoherence that marks genuine negro folk-songs of the type of Roll, Jordan, roll! or Swing low, sweet Chariot, evident creations out of the white heat of religious fervor, and surrounded by the atmosphere of the camp-meeting. What we have in fact, is a versified crude sermon, a homiletic discourse in ballad form. Instances of the religious, nay even of the homiletical or theological ballad, it may be stated in passing, are found even in the older strate of English folk-song, - we may cite The Cherry Tree Carol, The Carnal and the Crane, Dives and Lazarus, not to mention the lately discovered Bitter Withy. The ballad at present under discussion is doubly interesting, not only as an instance of the homiletic application of the ballad idea, but also as being one of the few attested American traditional ballads. Given a theme in its simplest form, - "young person lives a worldly life, rejects means of grace, and, dying, is numbered with the lost," familiar enough in the discourses of evangelists from the time of the Great Awakening on, - it appears that two closely similar developments of it in American balladry have taken place. We cannot fairly call them two ballads, in the sense that Baby Lon and Edward are two ballads. The one is a counterpart of the other. The material at hand may here be put in evidence. Theme: Impenitent-sinner-lost. Form I. The Downward Road. A. Lamentable Death of Polly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Notes, Vol. 30 The Dates Of Corneille's Early Plays In dating the plays that Corneille wrote before the Cid most modern scholars have accepted conclusions of the freres Parfaict, Marty-Laveaux, and a few other writers, without thoroughly testing them with recently discovered facts concerning Corneille's contemporaries and the stage for which they wrote. The following table gives the dates assigned to the first representations of his first eight plays by the freres Parfaict, Marty-Laveaux, and Lan-son, as well as the date of each play's privilege and acheve d'imprimer. To estimate the correctness of these dates, let us turn first to the evidence given by Corneille himself. His statements as to the length of time he has been writing help us little, for in 1660 he calls this period thirty years, in 1668 forty, in 1682 fifty. They indicate merely that he began to write about 1628-1632. But he does render us valuable assistance when he states that Melite was his first play, that Clitandre was written after a visit to Paris which followed the first representations of Melite, that by March 13, 1634, he had written six plays, and that the order of the composition of his plays is that of their position in the first edition of his collected plays. From these facts it is evident that Melite and Clitandre were acted before March 8, 1632, date of the latter's privilege, that the Veuve, Galerie, Suivante, Place royale were composed in this order before March 13, 1634, and that Medee and the Illusion comique appeared before the first representation of the Cid, which took place in December, 1636, or January, 1637. These facts seem certain. Let us now consider the plays separately. 1. Melite. Fontcnelle's date, 1625, is entirely inconsistent with other dates in Corneille's career, as will appear from the following discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Language Review, Vol. 2: A Quarterly Journal Devoted to the Study of Medieval and Modern Literature and Philology All students of stage history are aware of the valuable information bearing upon the composition and careers of the various Elizabethan companies of actors, which is afforded by the records in official documents of the performances given by them at Court. These records are of two kinds. There are the Accounts of the Revels Office, which was charged with the oversight of all dramatic festivities within the royal household, and incurred expenditure in connection with the choice, rehearsal, staging, dresses, and properties of the plays performed by the accredited 'Servants' of the Queen herself or of the great nobles, at Christmas, Candlemas, or Shrovetide, in the palaces of Whitehall, Windsor, Richmond, Hampton Court, Greenwich, or Nonsuch. A series, not quite complete, of full Revels Accounts from 1571 to 1588 was printed by Peter Cunningham in his Extracts from the Accounts of the Revels at Court (1842). These generally contain indications of the names of the companies engaged and the times at which they performed; and to them are in some cases attached full schedules of such information, together with the names of the plays. The other records bearing on the subject are those of the 'rewards' paid out of royal funds to the representatives of the companies in recompense of their services. These were not a concern of the Revels Office. The practice: was for a warrant directing the payment to be signed by no less a body than the Privy Council, and it is a curious reminder of the personal relation in which the Council stood to the Sovereign, to find notices of the issue of such warrants sandwiched in the minutes of its proceedings between accounts of important investigations into heresy and treason. The warrant was taken by the players to the Treasurer of the Chamber to whom it was addressed, honoured by him, and debited against funds assigned to him for this and other expenses. Of these payments, therefore, we have two independent records, one in the Council Register, and another in the Accounts of the Treasurer of the Chamber. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Notes, Vol. 8 It is significant to notice that at the very outset, so far as the literary survivals show, the Spanish and Portuguese pastoral poets were inclined to use their own countrymen as actors in their scenes. In this respect, to be sure, Boccaccio and the humanists had already set them an example. And it is also to be noted that in the Spanish pastoral the eulogy of Arcadia and of the Golden Age is wanting. This conception, peculiar to a de cadence in race and to disappointed hopes. Was cherished at that time in Italy alone, The Spaniards of the Moorish Conquest and of the Empire could not appreciate such a sentiment, and their literature remains un affected by it down through the first half of the sixteenth century; and such a vital differ ence in national environment is a sufficient ex planation for the slight influence of the Italian pastorals of the time on the Spanish. The latter belong to an earlier period, as far as their allegory is concerned, and depend rather on Vergil, Boccaccio and the Italian humanists of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Notes, Vol. 10: 1895 Cid was at its height, observed both the unitie's of time and place in the sense of the critics, though Corneille protested against them in his dedication of 1637, and in 1660 in his Ex amen, claims that what his actors speak in the street would be better said in their houses which border the street on either side. Still he was evidently satisfied with this kind of unity in 1634, though in the next play, la Place Royale, he finds himself forced to mod ify it by putting his heroine in her own chamber during one soliloquy. The multiplex decora tion would easily admit of this, and involved no moving of scenery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
