In this volume, we illustrate the essential aspects of modern hot-atom chemistry for non-specialists, with considerable emphasis on its applications in the related fields. We sincerely hope that this volume can promote mutual understanding and collaboration between hot-atom chemists and researchers in other disciplines. After a brief introduction (Chap. 1) the 2nd chapter gives the non-specialist an idea of experimental techniques commonly used for the production and analysis of hot chemical species. In Chap. 3, we have explained the concepts of hot-atom reac tions in gas, liquid and solid phases with typical examples rather than a comprehensive review of the literature. In view of the current state of accomplishment, the greater part of this chapter is concerned with gas phase studies. Regarding the solid-phase hot atom chemistry, we have confined ourselves only to introducing new concepts and discussing modern aspects.

The authors welcome all constructive criticism which will help to improve the book, should there be a second edition.

It always has been an extremely valuable tool to the organic chemist by supplying molecular "finger print" spectra at the atomic level. Unfortunately the high resolution achievable in liquid solutions could not be obtained in solids and physicists and physical chemists had to live with unresolved lines open to a wealth of curve fitting procedures and a vast amount of speculations. High resolution NMR in solids seemed to be a paradoxon. Broad structure less lines are usually encountered when dealing with NMR in solids. Only with the recent advent of mUltiple pulse, magic angle, cross-polarization, two-dimen sional and multiple-quantum spectroscopy and other techniques during the last decade it became possible to resolve finer details of nuclear spin interactions in solids. I have felt that graduate students, researchers and others beginning to get involved with these techniques needed a book which treats the principles, theo retical foundations and applications of these rather sophisticated experimental techniques. Therefore I wrote a monograph on the subject in 1976. Very soon new ideas led to the developement of "two-dimensional spectroscopy" and "multiple-quantum spectroscopy", topics which were not covered in the first edition of my book. Moreover an exponential growth of literature appeared in this area of research leaving the beginner in an awkward situation of tracing back from a current article to the roots of the experiment.

Especially nanocrystalline alloys attract a lot of scienti?c interest because, contrary to their amorphous counterparts, their magnetic parameters do not substantially deteriorate at elevated temperatures during the process of their practical exploitation. To bene?t from their unique magnetic pr- erties, the mechanism of crystallization should be known. Here, we present the study of structural transformation of NANOPERM-type alloys by the help of Mössbauer spectrometry, conventional X-ray diffraction (XRD), and by an advanced diffraction of synchrotron radiation. 2 Experimental Alloys of the composition Fe Mo Cu B for x = 12, 15, 17, 20 prepared by 91?x 8 1 x 57 rapid quenching on a rotating wheel were analyzed in the as-cast state by Fe transmission Mössbauer spectrometry (TMS) and by conversion electron Mössbauer spectrometry (CEMS). The obtained as-quenched ribbons were about 10 mm wide and 20 ?m thick. The nanocrystalline state was achieved by annealing about 2 cm ? long samples for 1 h at temperatures up to 650 C in a vacuum. Conventional XRD was performed with Cu-K radiation in Bragg-Brentano con?guration with graphite ? monochromator in the diffracted beam. Monochromatic synchrotron radiation of 7keV(? = 0. 178 nm) provided at the KMC-2 beamline at BESSY Berlin was used for in situ examinations of structural transformations during continuous heat treatment.

Book excerpt: In solid state physics and in materials science the investigation of the connection between the properties of solids and their microstructure is of major importance. For crystalline materials this connection is related to the lattice structure, and it can be shown convinc ingly that the material properties depend on deviations from the ideal lattice structure in the majority of cases. For this reason a reliable detection and analysis of defects in "nearly perfect" crystals is necessary, and a sufficient spatial resolution of the methods applied is required. Because electrons on the one hand strongly interact with the matter to be investigated and on the other hand can easily be focused electron-optical methods are very advantageous for this purpose. They are used in the diffraction mode, in the imaging mode and in the spectroscopic mode. The attainable high lateral resolution in the imaging mode makes the application of electron microscopy especially effective. Although already valuable information on crystal defects can be gained by using the routine technique of diffraction contrast imagingl-3) which has a resolution of some 4 10 nm - in the special weak-beam technique ) of some nm -, the detection of crystal defects and inhomogeneities, resp. on an atomic or molecular level by the aid of high resolution electron microscopy gets increasing importance.
