Book excerpt: On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Sophus Lie, an International Work shop "Modern Group Analysis: advanced analytical and computational methods in mathematical physics" has been organized in Acireale (Catania, Sicily, October 27 31, 1992). The Workshop was aimed to enlighten the present state ofthis rapidly expanding branch of applied mathematics. Main topics of the Conference were: • classical Lie groups applied for constructing invariant solutions and conservation laws; • conditional (partial) symmetries; • Backlund transformations; • approximate symmetries; • group analysis of finite-difference equations; • problems of group classification; • software packages in group analysis. The success of the Workshop was due to the participation of many experts in Group Analysis from different countries. This book consists of selected papers presented at the Workshop. We would like to thank the Scientific Committee for the generous support of recommending invited lectures and selecting the papers for this volume, as well as the members of the Organizing Committee for their help. The Workshop was made possible by the financial support of several sponsors that are listed below. It is also a pleasure to thank our colleague Enrico Gregorio for his invaluable help of this volume.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers based on some of the talks given at the NSF-CBMS conference on ``The Geometrical Study of Differential Equations'' held at Howard University (Washington, DC). The collected papers present important recent developments in this area, including the treatment of nontransversal group actions in the theory of group invariant solutions of PDEs, a method for obtaining discrete symmetries of differential equations, the establishment of a group-invariant version of the variational complex based on a general moving frame construction, the introduction of a new variational complex for the calculus of difference equations and an original structural investigation of Lie-Backlund transformations. The book opens with a modern and illuminating overview of Lie's line-sphere correspondence and concludes with several interesting open problems arising from symmetry analysis of PDEs. It offers a rich source of inspiration for new or established researchers in the field. This book can serve nicely as a companion volume to a forthcoming book written by the principle speaker at the conference, Professor Niky Kamran, to be published in the AMS series, CBMS Regional Conference Series in Mathematics.

Book excerpt: Today Lie group theoretical approach to differential equations has been extended to new situations and has become applicable to the majority of equations that frequently occur in applied sciences. Newly developed theoretical and computational methods are awaiting application. Students and applied scientists are expected to understand these methods. Volume 3 and the accompanying software allow readers to extend their knowledge of computational algebra. Written by the world's leading experts in the field, this up-to-date sourcebook covers topics such as Lie-Bäcklund, conditional and non-classical symmetries, approximate symmetry groups for equations with a small parameter, group analysis of differential equations with distributions, integro-differential equations, recursions, and symbolic software packages. The text provides an ideal introduction to modern group analysis and addresses issues to both beginners and experienced researchers in the application of Lie group methods.

Book excerpt: Systems and tools of computer algebra (Like AXIOM, Derive, FORM, Mathematica, Maple, Mupad, REDUCE, Macsyma…) let us manipulate extremely complex algebraic formulae symbolically on a computer. Contrary to numerics these computations are exact and there is no loss of accuracy. After decades of research and development, these tools are now becoming as indispensable in Science and Engineering as traditional number crunching already is.The ZiF'94 workshop is amongst the first devoted specifically to applications of computer algebra (CA) in Science and Engineering. The book documents the state of the art in this area and serves as an important reference for future work.

Book excerpt: The development of powerful computer algebra systems has considerably ex tended the scope of problems of scientific computing which can now be solved successfully with the aid of computers. However, as the field of applications of computer algebra in scientific computing becomes broader and more complex, there is a danger of separation between theory, systems, and applications. For this reason, we felt the need to bring together the researchers who now ap ply the tools of computer algebra for the solution of problems in scientific computing, in order to foster new and closer interactions. CASC'99 is the second conference devoted to applications of computer al gebra in scientific computing. The first conference in this sequence, CASC'98, was held 20-24 April 1998 in St. Petersburg, Russia. This volume contains revised versions of the papers submitted by the par ticipants and accepted by the program committee after a thorough reviewing process. The collection of papers included in the proceedings covers various topics of computer algebra methods, algorithms and software applied to scien tific computing: symbolic-numeric analysis and solving differential equations, efficient computations with polynomials, groups, matrices and other related objects, special purpose programming environments, application to physics, mechanics, optics and to other areas. In particular, a significant group of papers deals with applications of com puter algebra methods for the solution of current problems in group theory, which mostly arise in mathematical physics.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symmetry plays an important role in theoretical physics, applied analysis, classical differential equations, and bifurcation theory. Although numerical analysis has incorporated aspects of symmetry on an ad hoc basis, there is now a growing collection of numerical analysts who are currently attempting to use symmetry groups and representation theory as fundamental tools in their work. This book contains the proceedings of an AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar in Applied Mathematics, held in 1992 at Colorado State University. The seminar, which drew about 100 scientists from around the world, was intended to stimulate the systematic incorporation of symmetry and group theoretical concepts into numerical methods. The papers in this volume have been refereed and will not be published elsewhere.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To our wives, Masha and Marian Interest in the so-called completely integrable systems with infinite num ber of degrees of freedom was aroused immediately after publication of the famous series of papers by Gardner, Greene, Kruskal, Miura, and Zabusky [75, 77, 96, 18, 66, 19J (see also [76]) on striking properties of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. It soon became clear that systems of such a kind possess a number of characteristic properties, such as infinite series of symmetries and/or conservation laws, inverse scattering problem formulation, L - A pair representation, existence of prolongation structures, etc. And though no satisfactory definition of complete integrability was yet invented, a need of testing a particular system for these properties appeared. Probably one of the most efficient tests of this kind was first proposed by Lenard [19]' who constructed a recursion operator for symmetries of the KdV equation. It was a strange operator, in a sense: being formally integro-differential, its action on the first classical symmetry (x-translation) was well-defined and produced the entire series of higher KdV equations; but applied to the scaling symmetry, it gave expressions containing terms of the type J u dx which had no adequate interpretation in the framework of the existing theories. It is not surprising that P. Olver wrote "The de duction of the form of the recursion operator (if it exists) requires a certain amount of inspired guesswork. . . " [80, p.

Book excerpt: The first book to explicitly use Mathematica so as to allow researchers and students to more easily compute and solve almost any kind of differential equation using Lie's theory. Previously time-consuming and cumbersome calculations are now much more easily and quickly performed using the Mathematica computer algebra software. The material in this book, and on the accompanying CD-ROM, will be of interest to a broad group of scientists, mathematicians and engineers involved in dealing with symmetry analysis of differential equations. Each section of the book starts with a theoretical discussion of the material, then shows the application in connection with Mathematica. The cross-platform CD-ROM contains Mathematica (version 3.0) notebooks which allow users to directly interact with the code presented within the book. In addition, the author's proprietary "MathLie" software is included, so users can readily learn to use this powerful tool in regard to performing algebraic computations.
