Book excerpt: Excerpt from Programme of Studies for the Elementary School: Grades I to Vi Learning to read in the modern way is as simple and natural as learning to talk. The teacher bases her procedure on the principle that as a child learns to talk by talking, so he learns to read by reading. This principle being accepted, teaching to read resolves itself into providing the pupil with plenty of suitably graded reading material, and standing by to help him in his use of it. The modern teacher begins by teaching the pupil to recognize in print, on the blackboard and card, eight or ten of the words used in the first few pages of the primer. She does this by associating the words with pictures; as, boy, girl, cat, dog, etc.; or with actions; as, run, play, jump. If the teacher prefer, She may begin by teaching the pupils to recognize a few Simple sentences as wholes. When the chil dren become familiar with these, they begin to distinguish the separate words of which they are composed, and quickly learn to recognize the more important and striking Single words wherever they see them. As soon as the pupil knows a few words, the teacher begins arranging them for him in simple sentences, and having him read, that is, look at the sentence and tell the story, or perform the action. After the pupil has done this, he should be allowed to read his sentence orally. To say the words aloud is not necessarily reading, however; to read means to get thought. In each lesson the teacher presents a little group of new sentences made from the old words and including one or two new Words. The new words Should be so chosen and so placed that the child may be able to guess the meaning Of the unknown word from the known context. The teacher trains him to do this; it is the first and fundamental device used by all readers young and old. Each day the pupil reviews the old words in new ar rangements; each day he adds one or two new words to his stock, learning to read by reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prospectus of the People's New Education Advanced Common School, Embracing Kindergarten, Primary, Elementary and Advanced Education: Based on the Pedagogical Thought and Practice of Progressive Modern Education (1869 to 1907) Social Aspects of the Project. - All men and women of humane instincts believe that honest and useful work should be paid for at a rate affording a decent living and a competence for old age, according to kind and the expense of preparation. Where that is not done, mere political liberty will not prevent the growth of socialism and anarchism, and no government, however strong, can long prevent it under such circumstances, or where the wealthy arrogate the right to violate the laws which they expect the poor to respect and obey. The passages recorded here come from educational writings that were produced between 1880 and 1935--a time period that began with spirited calls for school reform and ended with a new and different concept of what it meant to be educated. It was this new concept of education that laid the foundation for the modern American school system.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Methods Book: Methods, Aids, Devices, Material for the Help of Teachers of Elementary School Classes There are five formal steps in teaching; the prepara tion, presentation, generalization, summary and applica t1on. The making of the plan is the first step in the prepara tion work of the teacher. Many teachers do not believe in a plan. They have a program of the day's work and follow it mechanically. The architect or engineer who attempted a piece of work without carefully planning it would meet with poor results. The average teacher does not know how to make a plan. She confuses a program with a plan. The magazines say very little about it. If there is nothing new in material or method, teaching will lack interest to the pupil and teacher. Old plans cannot be used as the subject matter grows, e. G. History; it changes because of new discoveries, wars, develop ments of countries. The children's experiences vary. Some classes have excellent home conditions; others have only apologies for a home. The class that is poor in arithmetic needs twice as much time for that particular subject; children in foreign districts need more time for language and reading. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elementary School Subjects, Vol. 1: How to Teach the Fundamental Subjects Tms book discusses the teaching of the common fundamental subjects found in elementary schools. It also contains suggestions as to what should make up the course of study in these subjects, and it attempts to set forth some of the principles that should underlie methods of instruction and determine the selection of subject-matter. It is essentially a book for the use of teachers and supervisors of schools and for those who are preparing to be teachers. The subjects discussed consume by far the greater part of the time of both teachers and pupils in the elementary schools. To say that the teaching of these subjects should be as skillful as possible is a common place. Because of the difference in the quality of teaching, one class exercise in reading is of infinitely greater value than another class exercise. For the same reason, one school may be found to be inferior to another school, even in the same system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elementary School Curriculum This book is offered as a practical help to teachers, supervisors, principals, and superintendents in the improvement of the elementary school curriculum. The extended discussion of questions concerning the elimination of undesirable material and the introduction of much desirable new material has created a genuine need for a thoroughgoing, constructive revision of the curriculum. Such a revision requires the development of fundamental principles of selection, related vitally on the one hand to the aims and activities of life, and on the other to the nature and needs of children. The first eight chapters of this book are devoted to the development of such principles. The second part of the book makes application of these principles in offering a suggestive curriculum which may be adapted to the needs of elementary schools, wherever they may be. While the content of the curriculum is the chief concern of this discussion, there are necessarily some references to method. Method is inherently related to the purpose and content of all experiences. To that degree in which purpose and content vitally affect method and are in turn affected by it, method is considered. Because of its importance and the relative recency of its formal development, the project method receives more than passing attention.
