Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern American School Buildings: Being a Treatise Upon, and Designs for the Construction of School Buildings The preparation of this work has been fragmentary in the extreme; the several subjects have been treated at intervals, usually wide apart, extending over a period of twenty years; they have, as a rule, been taken up at moments when the machinery of the office was practically at a standstill, or when some special problem or incident had brought forcibly to my mind the need of radical reforms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents theoretical and practical research relating to the vast, publicly financed program for the construction of new schools and the reorganization of existing educational buildings in Italy. This transformative process aims to give old buildings a fresh identity, to ensure that facilities are compliant with the new educational and teaching models, and to improve both energy efficiency and structural safety with respect to seismic activity. The book is divided into three sections, the first of which focuses on the social role of the school as a civic building that can serve the needs of the community. Innovations in both design and construction processes are then analyzed, paying special attention to the Building Information Modeling (BIM) strategy as a tool for the integration of different disciplines. The final section is devoted to the built heritage and tools, technologies, and approaches for the upgrading of existing buildings so that they meet the new regulations on building performance. The book will be of interest to all who wish to learn about the latest insights into the challenges posed by, and the opportunities afforded by, a comprehensive school building and renovation program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the design, operation and use of contemporary transportable buildings, and explores how functional performance can be assessed in small-scale examples for public use alongside their relationship to other design elements. The research focuses on three case studies, Chengdu Hualin Elementary School, Exxopolis and Kreod, that do not require a high-technology building environment or complex construction skills. Transportable buildings are defined as those that are transported in a number of parts for assembly on site. Contemporary transportable buildings respond to ecological issues, social impacts, technological innovation and economic demands. They can be used to measure a society’s development in environmental sustainability, innovation and economic growth through various forms. Small-scale transportable buildings fulfil many temporary habitation needs in diverse roles, such as non-emergency transitional housing, ephemeral exhibition buildings and seasonal entertainment facilities. Small-Scale Public Transportable and Pre-Fabricated Buildings will be a useful research text for academics and students in architecture, design and sustainable building performance.

Book excerpt: Flexibility, safety and accessibility: in addition to the current technical, energy and environmental standards, school buildings require innovative structural solutions which extend far beyond the building design. The authors guide the reader through the cultural development of school buildings, presenting stakeholders as well as historical and contemporary learning concepts, defining organizational tasks, formulating quality standards of contemporary learning and working as well as presenting typologies and spatial organizational models, which were created in cooperation with the foundation, the Montag Stiftung, as part of the project Guidelines for Productive School Buildings. 32 international school buildings are presented through detailed drawings and photographs, arranged according to their levels of education. Ten design parameters for school construction round off this practical design manual. With contributions by Natascha Meuser, Hans Wolfgang Hoffmann, Thomas Müller and Jochem Schneider

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together leading experts from the fields of architecture, design, engineering, education and the social sciences, this valuable collection presents a multidimensional understanding of the complexities and ways in which school designs influence and are influenced by educational practice. Moving beyond the long-debated question as to whether the design of a school influences pedagogic practice, chapters acknowledge the multiple and diverse ways in which teaching, learning, development and inclusion are impacted by the nature and quality of the physical environment. Considering changes in national and international policy, and exploring the changing pressures and demands on design, education and schooling more broadly, contributors rethink and re-envision those aspects of design and educational practice in which they specialise. Together, these chapters present a bold vision for the future conceptualisation, development and use of school buildings and facilities. An important contribution to debates on school design and education, inclusion and pedagogy, this is an essential and fascinating read for students, researchers, lecturers and policymakers involved in the fields of education and architecture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern School Construction: Fireproofness, Soudproofness, Daylight, Sanitation, Economy Safety First is a brief expression which indicates the prominence of the pres ent-day movement for the better protection and safeguarding of human lives.' No where should this appeal have a greater consideration than in the construction of school buildings. Here are housed hundreds of little children with neither the strength nor the experience to protect themselves in the face of such dangers as fires. The necessity for. Fireproof construction of schools is now generally recognized by School Boards and tax payers. There is no need to picture the horrors of a Collings wood calamity nor the long list of school fires occurring every year. The lessons of these disasters have been well learned by thinking people. The laws of many States now. Require fireproof construction throughout for schools of any size, and even in the smaller buildings fireproof corridors, stairs and boiler rooms. There is no doubt but that every section of the country will adopt similar laws in the near future. The cost of fireproof construction has been greatly reduced by the introduction of reinforced concrete in building schools. Fireproof, modern schools now cost little if any more than the old style, inflammable building, with masonry walls and wood joists. Reinforced concrete is used in many parts of the building, including floors, roofs, stairs, partitions, ceilings, etc. The exterior design may be of masonry, brick or concrete as desired. The proper distribution of daylight throughout the rooms (usually obtained from one side only) requires serious consideration in the. Construction of the windows. The use of modern steel sash assures maximum daylight from the window openings. There are no wide mullions or muntins to obstruct the light. The following pages indicate a few suggestions for the proper construction of schools, as well as a number of photographs of typical installations. The wide extent to which Kahn Building Products have been used in school buildings has given our engineers an exceptional experience along these lines. Their suggestions are sure to be useful and are furnished free of all obligation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
