Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to traffic control systems managers and designers, maintenance managers and staff, communications managers and staff, and others who are responsible for the effective functioning of traffic signal control systems at the state, district, or local level. It will also be of interest to consultants and suppliers of traffic signal systems. It presents information on the current practices of state and local transportation agencies with regard to the maintenance management practices for traffic signal control systems. A previous NCHRP Synthesis, No. 114 (1984), examined the state of the practice with regard to traffic signal maintenance management. This synthesis reexamines current traffic signal control maintenance practices in light of the extensive use of solid state equipment, PCs, integrated systems and other advanced technologies, such as ITS ( intelligent transportation systems). This report of the Transportation Research Board discusses the current technologies and the maintenance concerns related to both hardware and software systems. It also presents information on traffic signal systems maintenance organizations and staff, maintenance programming and scheduling, ancillary equipment and repair facilities, cost of maintenance and funding sources, and management strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report serves as a comprehensive guide to traffic signal timing and documents the tasks completed in association with its development. The focus of this document is on traffic signal control principles, practices, and procedures. It describes the relationship between traffic signal timing and transportation policy and addresses maintenance and operations of traffic signals. It represents a synthesis of traffic signal timing concepts and their application and focuses on the use of detection, related timing parameters, and resulting effects to users at the intersection. It discusses advanced topics briefly to raise awareness related to their use and application. The purpose of the Signal Timing Manual is to provide direction and guidance to managers, supervisors, and practitioners based on sound practice to proactively and comprehensively improve signal timing. The outcome of properly training staff and proactively operating and maintaining traffic signals is signal timing that reduces congestion and fuel consumption ultimately improving our quality of life and the air we breathe. This manual provides an easy-to-use concise, practical and modular guide on signal timing. The elements of signal timing from policy and funding considerations to timing plan development, assessment, and maintenance are covered in the manual. The manual is the culmination of research into practices across North America and serves as a reference for a range of practitioners, from those involved in the day to day management, operation and maintenance of traffic signals to those that plan, design, operate and maintain these systems.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project report summaries research and implementation of signal system communications and improved signal control. An investigation of available signal system communication technologies and media identified spread spectrum radio as an effective, inexpensive, and flexible alternative. As part of the project, a radio communications system was selected and installed at five signalized intersections along US 281 in Falfurrias, Texas. Closed loop system software was then installed to coordinate the previously isolated, actuated intersections. The end result was improved traffic control, improved traffic flow, and remote system monitoring for those responsible for signal maintenance. A second aspect of the project focused on developing real-time control functionality that would make use of the communications system. The Texas Department of Transportation's Dynamic Arterial Responsive Traffic System (DARTS) Specification provided a public domain, real-time signal coordination algorithm that suited this purpose. Simulators were developed by the Texas Transportation Institute to determine the effectiveness of DARTS installed in Falfurrias. Results show an average 18 percent reduction in travel time on US 281 and indicate the potential for DARTS to reduce arterial travel time. As an added project benefit, the simulation software developed for this project can be used to determine DARTS applicability at any given field site, and it can be used to train personnel in DARTS use and calibration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern cities cannot be imagined without traffic lights controlling the road network. To handle the network's changing demands efficiently, the signal plan specification needs to be shifted from the design time to the run-time of a signal system. The generic observer/controller architecture proposed for Organic Computing facilitates this shift. A two-levelled learning mechanism optimises signal plans on-line while a distributed coordination mechanism establishes green waves in the road network.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic congestion has greatly affected not only the nation's economy and environment but also every citizen's quality of life. A recent study shows that every American traveler spent an extra 38 hours and 26 gallons of fuel per year due to traffic congestion during the peak period. Of this congestion, 10% is attributable to improper operations of traffic signals. Surprisingly, more than a half of all signalized intersections in the United States needs to be re-optimized immediately to maintain peak efficiency. Even though many traffic signal control systems have been upgraded from pre-timed controllers to actuated and adaptive controllers, the traffic signal optimization software has not been kept current. For example, existing commercial traffic signal timing optimization programs including SYNCHRO and TRANSYT-7F do not optimize advanced controller settings available in the modern traffic controllers including minimum green time, extension time, and detector settings. This is in part because existing programs are based on macroscopic simulation tools that do not explicitly consider individual vehicular movements. To overcome such a shortcoming, a stochastic optimization method (SOM) was proposed and successfully applied to a signalized corridor in Northern Virginia. This study presents enhancements made in the SOM and case study results from an arterial network consisting of 16 signalized intersections. The proposed method employs a distributed computing environment (DCE) for faster computation time and uses a shuffled frog-leaping algorithm (SFLA) for better optimization. The case study results showed that the proposed enhanced SOM method, called SFLASOM, improved the total network travel times over field settings by 3.5% for Mid-Day and 2.1% for PM-Peak. In addition, corridor travel times were improved by 2.3% to 17.9% over field settings. However, when the new SOM timing plan was compared to the new field timing plan implemented in July 2008, the improvements were marginal, showing slightly over 2% reductions in individual vehicular delay.
