Book excerpt: Outlining the physical and psychological aspects of colour, this classic text explains the principles of colour perception and light and their application in the arts and sciences. Ogden Rood’s Modern Chromatics was published primarily as a work of colour theory, proposing a complex scientific theory on the nature of colour, primarily focusing on the laws of colour harmony and contrast. Written in accessible language and illustrated profusely throughout, it’s a highly practical volume that enhances one’s understanding of colour across creative and industrial contexts. Its contents include: Transmission and Reflection of Light Production of Colour by Dispersion Contrasts of Colour Abnormal Perception of Colour and Colour-Blindness Young’s Theory of Colour Complementary Colours Duration of the Impression on the Retina Contrast Proving as influential in the art world as it has been in the scientific history of colour theory, Rood’s timeless work provides an invaluable guide for those looking to master the use of colour, whether through an interest in the theories or their practical application.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Chromatics: With Applications to Art and Industry IT was not my intention to write a preface to this book, is I have usually found such compositions neither instructive nor amusing. On presenting the manuscript to my publishers, however, it was suggested that, al though prefaces are of no particular use to readers, yet from a certain point of view they are not without value. I accordingly beg leave to state that my object in this work has been to present, in a clear, logical, and if possi ble attractive form, the fundamental facts connected with our perception of colour, so far as they are at present known, or concern the general or artistic reader. For the explanation of these facts, the theory of Thomas Young, as modified and set forth by Helmholtz and Maxwell, has been consistently adhered to. The whole class of musical theories, as well as that of Field, have been discarded, for reasons that are set forth in the text. Book excerpt: Jacques-mile Ruhlmann, Pierre Chareau, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Charlotte Perriand, Eileen Gray: together these designers and their contemporaries pioneered the look of the modern French interior during the 1920s. Their use of sumptuous materials, rich jewel tones, intricate geometric patterns, and complex and varied textures has made this work a lasting favorite among interior designers, architects, and their clients. When it first appeared, the got moderne, or modern taste, was marketed through limited-edition portfolios containing unbound drawings, printed in full color using a traditional process called pochoir. Created in an era before color photography, the vivid gouache and watercolor depictions of interior spaces—complete with coordinated furniture, carpets, fabrics, and decorative accessories—announced the dawn of a new era of French design and set the standards of luxury and taste that still guide us today. Moderne presents the finest examples of this work in more than two hundred plates, selected by Sarah Schleuning, a curator of the Wolfsonian Museum, and faithfully reproduced to preserve their original color palettes. This sumptuous volume is comprehensive in scope, beginning with the early art moderne of Ruhlmann and concluding with the avant-garde work of Gray and Perriand. These and other high-water marks of the period are discussed in an essay by historian Jeremy Aynsley. Designers' biographies and a brief bibliography are also included, making this an inspirational resource for interior designers and architects, and an indispensable reference for historians of the modern era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. This really is a text that will fill a long-felt want. A key figure in that history is Amédée Ozenfant, painter, critic and friend of Le Corbusier, who in the first half of this century founded a school in London where he conducted experiments and wrote about color in architecture. Those experiments have been reconstructed for the book, which also includes reprints of his most important articles on the subject. This book provides a fascinating survey of this most contemporary topic that will inspire and inform designers and architects. Color has often been regarded as the final dressing of a building, subject to the vagaries of fashion and left to the client to select. There have been a number of studies of polychromy in the architecture of the more distant past, particularly in relation to modern conservation practices, but there is little or nothing on the architectural color of recent times, and especially within Modernism.
