The inductive method of development is followed in this text whenever the nature of the subject makes it practicable. As far as possible, long discussions of theoretical points have been avoided. Subjects have not been-introduced more rapidly than the average pupil is capable of comprehending the theory and processes involved. Through out the text it has been the aim to lead the pupil to make use of his previous knowledge. In the beginning, the account rather than the journal has been introduced. First, because the inductive method of development lends itself more readily to this order of presentation. Second, because by this order the pupil concentrates his powers upon one kind of value received and disposed of, and also because the pupil immediately realizes that his work is productive of results. If the journal is introduced at the beginning, the pupil works unintelligently because he does not comprehend the purpose of what he is required to do. Third, because this is the historical order of the develop ment of bookkeeping. At first the ledger was the original book of entry, and still is in many instances, while the journal never has been regarded as a book of original entry. Fourth, because this order of presentation is advocated by the best accountants. This text is divided into lessons, and what is required of the student is definitely stated. In the average text-book on bookkeeping, such directions are nearly always lacking, making it extremely difficult to determine what is wanted. Theoretical bookkeeping and business practice are included in one text. The aim has been to give sufficient exercise in the making of bookkeeping records thoroughly to familiarize the pupil with the forms and the language of the subject before he is called upon to write and receive the business papers that are necessary in the second part of the text. It is the common experience of teachers that pupils beginning the subject with the business practice always regard bookkeeping proper as of secondary importance. It is generally sup posed to have been first practised at Venice in the fifteenth. Century, when that city was the grand Emporium of Europe. Some Authors, however, think that Double Entry was known to the ancients, and revived only in Italy with the revival of commerce and several passages are quoted, which Show that the ancients entered the receipts and payments of money on opposite pages, in the way of Debtor and Creditor but nothing beyond Single Entry can be inferred from this practic nor is it probable that any thing more was wanted in the rude and simple state of ancient commerce. Insurances, Bills of Exchange, and other modern improvements demanded, and in all probability produced, corresponding improvements in the mode of keeping Accounts; but that which places the subject in the clearest light is that none of the technical terms: of Double Entry are to be found in the ancient languages, but appear to be immediately derived from the Italian, as adopted in the other languages of Europe. In bookkeeping, start with the transaction. The next step is the journal entry to record the transaction. The journal entry is the basis of every entry in any book of original entry. The first record of every transaction is a journal entry or its equivalent. The Ledger Account is the record of final entries, the end of the transactions so far as bookkeeping is concerned. Hence, the logical development must begin with the journal entry and develop toward the Ledger account as the final record in the routine of bookkeeping, terminating in the Trial Balance. Accounting is the auditing of the bookkeeping to determine the correctness of it, the preparation of the Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Statement, the closing of the books to correspond with these statements, the preparing of analysis sheets or detailed statements, schedules and comparative statements for the information of the management of the business. There are two sides to every question, and, if only one side is considered and the other side ignored, the idea is hazy and incomplete. This is notable in every argument of a question. There are two sides to every business trausse tion, and if both sides are considered at the same time, the idea is clear and complete. The journal entry of a transaction considers both sides, and the idea is complete in the mind and the record is complete in the books. Carrying out this plan of logical development by easy steps, and securing the complete idea for each step before the next step is taken, not only the routine of bookkeeping is made easy to learn, but the elements of accounting are introduced in the natural place and order, and are made as easy to learn and to teach as the routine of bookkeeping.
