Download or read book Regionalism and Modernity written by Leen Meganck and published by Universitaire Pers Leuven. This book was released on 2013 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex and shifting relation between regionalism and modernity With its search for purity, honesty, modesty, and ‘fitness of purpose', the late 19th and early 20th century concept of architectural regionalism is seminal to the modern movement. In later historiography, however, regionalism in Europe was neglected and even labeled ‘backward'. The origins of this drastic change of perception can be traced to the 1930s, when regionalism as a positive form gradually turned into a ‘closed' form of regionalism, a folding back on one's own region as a defence mechanism in an economically and politically turbulent decade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2019, Gerlin Heestermans started the online platform Toerist Modernist as an ode to Belgium?s often little-known modernist heritage gems. Soon her hobby - spotting houses and buildings, finding the courage to ring the doorbell and ask for a visit - became almost an obsession. She mapped out several architecture walks (and also organises tailor-made tours) to put the many amazingly handsome modernist houses and buildings on the map. 00In this guide, Gerlin shares her 12 best walks in places like Charleroi, Deurne, Turnhout, Tournai, Liège, Ostend or Mariakerke. Each walk is described in detail and illustrated with photos of the exterior façades and a clear map, followed by a selection of inspiring interior images of some of the houses on the route.
Book Synopsis Toward an Architecture by : Le Corbusier
Download or read book Toward an Architecture written by Le Corbusier and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1923, Toward an Architecture had an immediate impact on architects throughout Europe and remains a foundational text for students and professionals. Le Corbusier urges readers to cease thinking of architecture as a matter of historical styles and instead open their eyes to the modern world. Simultaneously a historian, critic, and prophet, he provocatively juxtaposes views of classical Greece and Renaissance Rome with images of airplanes, cars, and ocean liners. Le Corbusier's slogans--such as "the house is a machine for living in"--and philosophy changed how his contemporaries saw the relationship between architecture, technology, and history. This edition includes a new translation of the original text, a scholarly introduction, and background notes that illuminate the text and illustrations.

Download or read book Living in Modern Isms. Brussels Biennale of Modern Architecture 4-25 October 2014 written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brussels Biennale of Modern Architecture focuses on the less known yet enriching Brussels architectural patrimony of the era 1918-1972. This first edition, entitled Living in modern isms, will display the wide range of “isms” that were used to design Brussels dwellings. From the beginning of the 20th century Brussels was a leading city when it came to new architectural developments. In the interwar period, ornamental simplicity and new ground plans ran parallel to the introduction of new techniques such as lifts and sanitary facilities. Duplexes, horizontal windows, flat roofs and terraces were common ingredients in modernist architecture. High-rise blocks were the new and visible symbol of post- war modernism when architects started to use prefabricated materials. An abundance of optimistic colours completed their new way of designing.0Exhibition: Several buildings in Brussels, Belgium (2014).
