Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum dots (QDs) are hybrid organic/inorganic nanoparticles with novel physical properties. QDs have two components: an inorganic core and an optically active coated shell. Moreover, surface coatings can be applied to QDs to modify the particle as needed for experiments. Hydrophilic coatings prevent leaking of metal cargo from the core, enhancing the solubility in biological contexts and bind molecules, such as receptor–ligands, antibodies, therapeutic, and diagnostic macromolecules for enhanced effects. Their high surface-to-volume ratio allows multiple functional groups to attach onto the surface of the particles at constant surface volume. Silicon-, gallium-, indium-, or germanium-based; cadmium-based; and carbon-based QDs have already been used in many applications, such as imaging probes for the engineering of multifunctional nanodevices. Superior properties of QDs make them an excellent system in technology and biotechnology. This book describes electroanalytical applications of QD-based nanobiosensors, including brief information about the synthesis and characterization of QDs and basics of electroanalytical methods, followed by QDs in electrochemical biomimetic sensors, QDs in microchips, inorganic materials doped QDs, QD-based electrochemical DNA biosensors, electroluminescence for biomarker analysis using aptamer-based QDs, QD-based photoelectrochemical techniques, enzyme-based nanobiosensors using QDs, QD-based electrochemical immunosensors, and QD-modified nanosensors in drug analysis. Outlines QD-based applications for drug, food, clinical, and environmental science Shows how the properties of QDs make them effective ingredients in biosensing applications Assesses the major challenges in integrating QDs in biosensing systems

Book excerpt: This book is written with the view of providing learners a fast track into the modern applications of quantum physics. It is designed as a book of Problems and Solutions, consisting of more than 200 exercises with explicitly worked out solutions.Focusing on modern research topics, the problems are designed to suit recent developments such as graphene, topological materials, spintronics, and quantum computation and information (QCI). Categorized into eight chapters, the book first introduces QM for undergraduates with an emphasis on the Dirac formalism and its representation in the form of matrices and functions. Chapter 2 is dedicated to spin physics, where the spinor formalism is increasingly relevant to research on spintronics, graphene, topological systems, Dirac, Weyl, and all branches of quantum information sciences. Chapter 3 deals with second quantization and its applications in nanoscience and condensed matter physics. Building on the foundations of the previous two chapters, Chapter 4 expounds on the non-equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) — a modern topic with problems designed to suit applications in nanoscale electronic and spintronics systems. Chapter 5 covers gauge fields and topology, with a modern emphasis on applications in new materials such as graphene and topological systems. Chapter 6 comprises numerous advanced sub-topics in condensed matter physics as well as conventional topics such as band structures and entanglement entropy. Chapter 7 extends to cross-disciplinary and miscellaneous physics, where the topics are not necessarily quantum by nature, but deal with issues that have inspired the development of quantum mechanics and quantum fields. Lastly, the book caters to quantum computation with a preamble on the QM foundations of spin, projection, measurement and density matrices which underpin applications in quantum gates, quantum teleportation and entanglement.Readers can expect a handy and effective guide in mastering problem solving techniques in frontier applications of quantum physics.

Book excerpt: This volume contains papers delivered at a NATO Advanced Research Workshop and provides a broad introduction to all major aspects of quantum dot structures. Such structures have been produced for studies of basic physical phenomena, for device fabrication and, on a more speculative level, have been suggested as components of a solid-state realization of a quantum computer. The book is structured so that the reader is introduced to the methods used to produce and control quantum dots, followed by discussions of their structural, electronic, and optical properties. It concludes with examples of how their optical properties can be used in practical devices, including lasers and light-emitting diodes operating at the commercially important wavelengths of 1.3 Am and 1.55 Am."
