Book excerpt: Sandy fluvial units preserved in the terrestrial stratigraphic record are often interpreted as braided-river deposits based on the abundance of sand and noticeable lack of fine-grained (silt and clay) sediment. This definition was tested through detailed observation, sampling, and grain-size analysis of the modern sandy braided Niobrara and North Loup rivers and the single-thread Calamus River, Nebraska, USA, and compared to the channel-fill deposits Lower Jurassic Kayenta Formation, Colorado Plateau, USA. The results confirm a significant amount of silt and clay is present and transported as both suspended load and bed load in sandy braided rivers. 50-75% of the sediment composing the bed is transported in suspension. The sediment in suspension is often deposited in regions of reduced current velocity within or lateral to the active channel. Such deposits faithfully record the grain size of the active suspended load and are thus useful proxies for suspended sediment in ancient fluvial deposits. There are two direct applications that make use of the fine-grained component of sandy braided rivers. First, an idealized channel-fill model of fine-grained lithofacies in otherwise sandy braided river deposits provides an approach to reservoir characterization that deductively constrains the dimensions and distribution of fine-grained barriers to flow and accounts for the inherent variability of sandy braided rivers. Second, the coarsest grain-size fraction of the suspended load (D95), when measured in conjunction with the deepest channel flow depth, is directly related to river slope. Thus suspended-load (slackwater) deposits in ancient fluvial sequences can be used to calculate depositional gradient. Constraining the paleoslope of ancient fluvial systems is useful for establishing the paleo-climatic and tectonic history of continental sequences. Comparison between modern and ancient sandy braided rivers suggests that traditional lithofacies models for braided-river deposition and preservation must be reconsidered. The Kayenta Formation, a type-example of a sandy braided river deposit displays few of the features commonly associated with sandy braided rivers. Braided rivers may be part of a continuum of river planforms. The river processes responsible for deposition and preservation are not necessarily dependent upon planform and can be extracted from ancient fluvial outcrops to help reconstruct paleo-flow conditions.
