Book Synopsis It Takes a Village by : Hillary Rodham Clinton
Download or read book It Takes a Village written by Hillary Rodham Clinton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years ago one of America's most important public figures, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, chronicled her quest both deeply personal and, in the truest sense, public to help make our society into the kind of village that enables children to become able, caring resilient adults. IT TAKES A VILLAGE is a textbook for caring, filled with truths that are worth a read, and a reread. In her substantial new introduction, Senator Clinton reflects on how our village has changed over the last decade, from the internet to education, and on how her own understanding of children has deepened as she has watched Chelsea grow up and take on challenges new to her generation, from a first job to living through a terrorist attack. She discusses how the work she is doing in the Senate is helping children and looks at where America has been successful, improvements in the foster care system and support for adoption, and where there is still work to be done, providing pre-school programmes and universal health care to all our children. This new edition elucidates how the choices we make about how we raise our children, and how we support families, will determine how all nations will face the challenges of this century.
Book Synopsis Writing Contemporary Nigeria: How Sefi Atta Illuminates African Culture and Tradition by : Walter Collins
Download or read book Writing Contemporary Nigeria: How Sefi Atta Illuminates African Culture and Tradition written by Walter Collins and published by Cambria Press. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sefi Atta is one of the latest in a great line of female Nigerian writers. her works have garnered several literary awards; these include the Red Hen Press Short Story Award, the PEN International David TK Wong Prize, the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa, and the Noma Award for Publishing in Africa. Atta's oeuvre has received the praise and respect of several noted African writers such as Buchi Emecheta, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Helon Habila. Atta's insights into the roles and treatment of women, neocolonial government structures, patriarchy, 21st-century phenomena such as Nigerian e-mail phishing and the role of geography and place in characters' lives make her works some of the most indelible offerings across contemporary African fiction. Nevertheless, there exists a relative dearth of critical analyses of her works. That Atta writes across the genres perhaps explains some of the lack of literary criticism of her works. This study will facilitate continued examination of Atta's writings and further dissemination of critique. In this premiere edited volume on the works of Sefi Atta, Collins has assembled contributors from around the globe who offer critical analysis on each of Atta's published novels and several of her short stories. The volume is divided into four sections with chapters grouped by thematic connections-Sisterhood, Womanhood and Rites of Passage, The City, Dark Aspects of Atta's Works and Atta's Literature in Application. The book examines Atta's treatment of these themes while referencing the proficiency of her writing and style. The collection includes an interview with Atta where she offers an insightful and progressive perspective on current language use by Africans. This book is the first aggregate of literary critique on selected works of Sefi Atta. This book is an important volume of literary criticism for all literature, world literature and African literature collections. It is part of the Cambria African Studies Series headed by Toyin Falola (University of Texas at Austin) with Moses Ochonu (Vanderbilt University).
Book Synopsis Intertextuality in Contemporary African Literature by : Ode Ogede
Download or read book Intertextuality in Contemporary African Literature written by Ode Ogede and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intellectual exchange among African creative writers is the subject of this highly innovative and wide-ranging look at several forms of intertextuality on the continent. Focusing on the issue of the availability of old canonical texts of African literature as a creative resource, this study throws light on how African authors adapt, reinterpret, and redeploy existing texts in the formulation of new ones. Contemporary African writers are taking advantage of and extending the resources available in the existing native literary tradition. But the field of inter-ethnic/trans-national African literary inter-textual studies is a novel one in itself as the theme of African writers' debt to Euro-American authors has been the critical commonplace in African literature. Detailing the echoes and reverberations the voices of the past have generated, and the distinctive uses to which the writers are putting one another's works, the book demonstrates that the influence of local stock is significant: it is pervasive andwidespread, and manifests itself in ways both random and systematic, but it is a ubiquitous presence in the African literary imagination.
Book Synopsis Welcome to Our Hillbrow by : Phaswane Mpe
Download or read book Welcome to Our Hillbrow written by Phaswane Mpe and published by Pan Macmillan South africa. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome To Our Hillbrow is an exhilarating and disturbing ride through the chaotic and hyper-real zone of Hillbrow - microcosm of all that is contradictory, alluring and painful in the changing South African psyche. Everything is there: the shattered dreams of youth, sexuality and its unpredictable costs, AIDS, xenophobia, suicide, the omnipotent violence that often cuts short the promise of young people, and the Africanist understanding of the life continuum that does not end with death but flows on into an ancestral realm. Infused with the rhythms of the inner city pulsebeat, this courageous novel is compelling in its honesty and its broad vision, which links Hillbrow, rural Tiragalong and Oxford. It spills out the guts of Hillbrow-living with the same energy and intimate knowledge ,with which the Drum writers wrote Sophiatown into being.
Book Synopsis African Writers on African Writing by : G. D. Killam
Download or read book African Writers on African Writing written by G. D. Killam and published by London : Heinemann. This book was released on 1973 with total page 196 pages. Clark, Gabriel Okara, Lewis Nkosi, James Ngugi, Okello Oculi, Ali A. Mazrui, Sembène Ousmane, Nadine Gordimer and Joe Kariuki. They form landmarks on the road towards the establishment of a cxritical assessment of modern African writing. The essays reveal three concers. Firstly a concern with the social and political function of literature. Then there is the debate on relationship between African literature and the traditions of English and French literature. Finally the writers are anxious to establish the uniquely African quality of African literature and the African society that literature reflects.

Book Synopsis Prayers to Survive Wars that Last by : Eze, Chielozona
Download or read book Prayers to Survive Wars that Last written by Eze, Chielozona and published by Cissus World Press. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In this meditative and quietly lyrical approach, Chielozona Eze marks himself in this new African poetics not as a voice of easy protest, not as the voice of a bombast and rhetorical turn, but as the voice of an African poet in the twenty-first century trying to make sense of all the hunger, anger, war, loss, and desecration that has haunted his life and the lives of many Africans but remains always poised on that tender grace, that ease of dance, that transubstantiation that works an alchemy that is not about the outcome but always about the struggle, the engagement, and the terms thereof.” Chris Abani, Board of Trustee Professor of English, Northwestern University “This collection is a fitting memorial to a war still unatoned for and its accompanying sense of bereavement and lack of closure. In tune with a pervasive sense of loss and quiet recollection, the poems are meditative, packing a punch in their ambling profundity; Chielozona Eze does not blame; he speaks of introspection and love.” Amatoritsero Ede, Publisher & Managing Editor, Maple Tree Literary Supplement

Book Synopsis Africa Writes Back to Self by : Evan M. Mwangi
Download or read book Africa Writes Back to Self written by Evan M. Mwangi and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2010-07-02 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The profound effects of colonialism and its legacies on African cultures have led postcolonial scholars of recent African literature to characterize contemporary African novels as, first and foremost, responses to colonial domination by the West. In Africa Writes Back to Self, Evan Maina Mwangi argues instead that the novels are primarily engaged in conversation with each other, particularly over emergent gender issues such as the representation of homosexuality and the disenfranchisement of women by male-dominated governments. He covers the work of canonical novelists Nadine Gordimer, Chinua Achebe, NguÅgiÅ wa Thiong'o, and J. M. Coetzee, as well as popular writers such as Grace Ogot, David Maillu, Promise Okekwe, and Rebeka Njau. Mwangi examines the novels' self-reflexive fictional strategies and their potential to refigure the dynamics of gender and sexuality in Africa and demote the West as the reference point for cultures of the Global South.
Download or read book Mrs. Shaw written by Mukoma Wa Ngugi and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fictional East African Kwatee Republic of the 1990s, the dictatorship is about to fall, and the nation’s exiles are preparing to return. One of these exiles, a young man named Kalumba, is a graduate student in the United States, where he encounters Mrs. Shaw, a professor emerita and former British settler who fled Kwatee’s postcolonial political and social turmoil. Kalumba’s girlfriend, too, is an exile: a Puerto Rican nationalist like her imprisoned father, she is an outcast from the island. Brought together by a history of violence and betrayals, all three are seeking a way of regaining their humanity, connecting with each other, and learning to make a life in a new land. Kalumba and Mrs. Shaw, in particular, are linked by a past rooted in colonial and postcolonial violence, yet they are separated by their differing accounts of what really happened. The memory of each is subject to certain lapses, whether selective or genuine. Even when they agree on the facts—be they acts of love, of betrayal, or of violence—each narrator shapes the story in his or her own way, by what is left in and what is left out, by what is remembered and what is forgotten.
