Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Rural development and peacebuilding in Colombia have been highly prioritized by higher education institutions since the signing of the Peace Agreement between the National Government and the FARC-EP. This has resulted in the need to further analyze rural strategies that contribute towards a better life for the population of territories where armed conflict is coming to an end, whilst understanding the pressing uncertainty that this process implies; on the one hand, for the urgency of generating rapid and concrete responses to social justice and equity, and on the other, because fulfilling the agreement guarantees scenarios of non-repetition of the war in the country.

Book excerpt: Culture plays a significant role in regulating emotions and influencing the dissemination of education, particularly within diverse geographic locations. However, the impact of culture on emotional dynamics within educational settings is not well understood. This is particularly important within contexts of social and cultural diversity, where schools must navigate cultural and majority emotional dynamics. The aim of this research topic is to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in the field of emotional dynamics in education, with a particular focus on the ways in which culture mediates these dynamics. The topic will also explore the problems and solutions deployed within educational contexts of cultural diversity, with a specific emphasis on school/family and community interaction.

Book excerpt: Accelerated population ageing, long a significant issue for developed countries, is now becoming important in the developing world too. Population ageing is one of the great achievements of the past century - although it brings its own social, economic, political and cultural challenges. The quality of life of older people is strongly conditioned by their capacity to manage opportunities and risks. Social protection, both formal and informal, can be critical. This book examines the links between well-being and development, drawing on examples from low, middle and high-income countries. It examines ageing in a number of very different development contexts - Argentina, Brazil, China, Ghana, Japan, Mexico, Thailand, Ukraine, UK and USA. It highlights the complexity of relationships between development and the way later life is experienced, identifies key priorities for policy-makers, and maps out an urgent research agenda.

Book excerpt: In this outstanding book, leading experts from throughout Europe provide a fascinating overview of the most important psychological research into aging, with special emphasis on training and professional issues as well as science. In terms of its population Europe is the oldest continent in the world, thus placing European research into the effects and implications of an aging population in a unique position. As this book shows, the aging of the population should be considered a positive phenomenon that reflects sociopolitical, educational, biomedical, and psychological development. The real threat for our population is not aging but disability, and the challenge for the 21st century is to reduce dependency and disability and thus improve well-being and quality of life, rather than increasing life expectancy. The recent United Nations' 2nd International Plan of Action on Aging and its Research Agenda on Aging for the 21st Century, as well as policies of the European Federation of Psychologists Associations, tell us that psychology and psychologists will play an essential part in meeting this challenge. This book shows how.

This book was released on 1991-01-15 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on preventing potentially disabling conditions from developing into disabilities and on minimizing the effects of such conditions on a person's productivity and quality of life. It describes disability as a social and public health issue and not just a physical condition. The report begins with an executive summary, an introduction which discusses prevention issues in general and defines concepts, and a list of 27 recommendations. Subsequent chapters discuss: (1) the magnitude and dimensions of disability in the United States; (2) a conceptual approach to disability prevention and use of the tools and principles of epidemiology; (3) major areas of disability (developmental disabilities, injury-related disabilities, chronic diseases and aging, and secondary conditions associated with primary disabling conditions); (4) government and private sector programs concerned with disability prevention; and (5) conclusions and recommendations in the areas of a national program for the prevention of disability, surveillance, research, access to care and preventive services, and professional and public education. Appendixes contain a paper by Saad Z. Nagi titled "Disability Concepts Revisited: Implications for Prevention"; a statement of one committee member dissenting from this majority report of the Committee on a National Agenda for the Prevention of Disabilities; a response to the dissenting statement by committee members; and committee biographies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of a new series which will present the proceedings of the newly established Nestlé Nutrition Workshop Series: Clinical & Performance Programme aimed at adult nutrition. Undernutrition is a common phenomenon in elderly people, and malnutrition reaches significant levels in those being in hospital, nursing homes or home care programs. Consequences of malnutrition often go unrecognised owing to the lack of specific validated instruments to assess nutritional status in frail elderly persons. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) provides a single, rapid assessment of nutritional status in the elderly of different degrees of independence, allowing the prevalence of protein-energy malnutrition to be determined and to evaluate the efficacy of nutritional intervention and strategies. Easy, quick and economical to perform, it enables staff to check the nutritional status of elderly people when they enter hospitals or institutions and to monitor changes occurring during their stay. Moreover, the MNA is predictive of the cost of care and length of stay in hospital. This publication will be of immense assistance to heads of geriatric teaching units, teachers in nutrition, clinicians general practitioners and dieticians, enabling them to better detect, recognise and start treatment of malnutrition in the elderly.
