Book excerpt: A pecuária leiteira do Estado de Goiás é caracterizada por mais de 90% de pequenos produtores, definidos como aqueles que produzem menos de 500 litros de leite dia. O modelo de produção de leite atual não é competitivo, com tendências de exclusão da grande maioria desses produtores, em decorrência de um novo ambiente competitivo que se formou a partir das grandes mudanças ocorridas na cadeia de lácteos brasileira, na década de 90. Diante dessa realidade, esta dissertação apresenta um novo modelo de produção de leite para os pequenos produtores da Região Centro de Goiás, visando garantir a sobrevivência e permanência dos mesmos na atividade. O modelo proposto foi formulado a partir das tendências e cenários projetados para os próximos anos, da avaliação da pecuária de leite em Goiás e de experimentos e recomendações de vários especialistas e pesquisadores, especialmente da EMBRAPA GADO DE LEITE. Na construção do mesmo foram considerados os seguintes fatores-chave: gestão sistêmica; sistema de alimentação e manejo; processo de reprodução bovino; e processo de produção integrado: leite-bezerros-matrizes. Como base de sustentação teórica, o modelo está fundamentado nos trabalhos sobre competitividade sistêmica de FERRAZ et al. (1997) e FARINA (1999), nos princípios gerais de sistema abertos de KATZ e KAHN (1976) e nos estudos sobre análise de cadeia de valores de PORTER (1989).
