It takes a critical realist stance to arrive at the “essence” of written communication with the aim of informing a practical application: a computerised writing tutor. Following Robert Franck’s seminal work on modelling, a theoretical model of writing was first formulated, consisting of an architecture of functions which constitute the prerequisites for effective communication. Next, an applied model - a composing algorithm with an input option - was developed, showing composing to be a systemic social process with intra- and extra-systemic variation. The algorithm provided the design template for a writing tutor program which models for the learner both the systemic and the socially situated nature of writing. This book establishes composing as a communicative interaction, and shows the essential dynamism of writing, while offering an exemplar of a systems approach to modelling in the social sciences.

Since most modern networks operate on the basis of time slotting, and transmit information in fixed length (packets or cells), it thus becomes natural to model such networks in discrete-time by associating a time slot in a physical network with the unit time in the corresponding discrete-time model. The book shows how, in this way, very accurate models that faithfully reproduce the stochastic behaviour of a communication or computer network can be constructed. The treatment is self contained, and progresses from basic probability theory and discrete-time queueing networks. These latter are applied to model the performance of numerous wide area satellite networks and local area networks, ranging in complexity from simple Aloha schemes to the timed token protocol of the FDDI network. The main objective of this book is to present a unified method for modeling any network access protocol as a discrete-time queueing network and t develop efficient solution techniques for these models. A significant number of the models and their solutions which are included have not previously appeared in the open literature. Book excerpt: As the number of available large and many-faceted computer models continues to increase, simulating complex systems by coupling existing models of smaller subsystems becomes more attractive because of advantages such as leveraging existing programming. Advances in computational technologies also contribute to the increased feasibility of coupled systems. Although coupled systems may be used to study new problems that their constituent models could not address, the coupling process brings its own challenges. The modeler may face the task of coupling models from a heterogeneous environment of development platforms, programming languages, and model assumptions. Moreover, the modeler may wish to allow constituent models to be replaced or upgraded without significant difficulty. We discuss a model coupling approach that attempts to address these issues. In our approach, the models run as separate executable processes and store data in a database for later retrieval by other models. While the approach does not prescribe any particular database design, we do suggest elements that are likely to appear. We describe a proof-of-concept application of the approach and evaluate how well our approach meets its goals.
