Once a chemical enters the soil it is subject to various transformation processes. It partitions between the liquid, solid and gaseous phase, it is sorbed to different binding sites with a different strength of bonding, it may decay by a simple chemical process or it may be transformed by microorganisms. Solute transport through soil and subsurface is mediated by water flow and is strongly influenced by solute sorption. To complicate matters, soil structures are heterogeneous. All these processes are embedded in a spatio-temporal hierarchy. The book brings together many different aspects of environmental fate modelling of pesticides comprising such diverse subjects as, e.g., compartment theory, nonlinear biological degradation models, modelling toxicity, parameter identification, coupling of physical and biological processes, pedotransfer functions, translation of models across scales, coupling geographical information systems with models, and FUZZY-approaches.

However, clear discrepancies occurred between some model estimates and corresponding measured values, e.g., under-prediction of peak flows and nitrogen losses during storm events. Two potential sources of these errors include: (1) the lack of a preferential flow component, and (2) nitrogen transformation routines that may not adequately reflect all of the processes that occur in the field. EPIC showed a limited capability to reproduce tillage and crop rotation effects on crop yield.

Effects of fertilizer use on the environment should show first in countries where fertilizers have been used intensively for some time and where consumption is steadily rising. It is the experience gained in such countries which is being discussed below with a view to assessing the impact of fertilizers on the human environment, including the development of methods for recognizing and minimizing any undersirable consequences which may be produced. It should be realized that high densities of human population combined with intensive crop and livestock production have led to the production of organic wastes at a rate too high for natural processes to convert it in ecologically safe compounds. Therefore both direct and indirect effects of intensive fertilizer use have been reviewed.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 1,3, Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, language: English, abstract: The paper asks, if ponds located in agroecosystems can be prevented from tipping over by variation in combinations of fertilizers and pesticides. Through a simulation in NetLogo, an agent-based programmable modeling environment, the interplay of two pesticides (Cypermethrin and Malathion) and a fertilizer (Nitrogen + Phosphate) and their effect on the aquatic productivity is observed. The model depicts an agroecosystem with three separate fields and two ponds. The model is simplified by assuming consistent environmental conditions and narrowing down the pond population to one zooplankton species and one phytoplankton species (Chlorella vulgaris). Through variation of variables different scenarios are generated. The research revealed that input of pesticides – even without fertilizers which are known for supporting phytoplankton growth – results in eutrophication through decreasing zooplankton population and therefore blooming phytoplankton population. The original contribution of the simulation is in revealing that beyond the amount of chemical substances used in farming, the variation of input is also to consider, since certain ones may have greater negative effects than assumed so far.
