Book excerpt: The research field in distributed systems has witnessed a recent growing interest in wireless mobile distributed computing, i.e. distributed algorithms deployed in dynamic networks. Such systems introduce new challenges due to their time-varying topologies, which hinder the performance and safety guarantees of algorithms that are fundamental building blocks of more complex distributed algorithms. The main focus of this work is to establish different ways to study such systems via emulation and simulation and to propose some techniques to deploy applications in dynamic networks. We evaluated different data flow paradigms, such as many-to-many distributed storage, one-many computational offloading, and many-to-many decentralized swarm control and data load-balancing.We adopted the quantitative approach as a cornerstone methodology, using simulation and emulation to collect data for analysis. Even though there are many discrete simulators in the state-of-the-art, there was a gap for emulation tools applied to mobile ad hoc computing. Some important features were missing, such as a full-scale emulated deployment environment where prototypes coexist with off-the-shelf applications and more options for mobility control. This work proposes MACE, a framework that enables the emulation of mobile distributed applications in a virtual environment so that the scenarios and topologies composed by mobile wireless nodes can be easily modified. Since emulation requires that the tests run in wall time, the need for a fast simulator arose. Therefore, we designed, implemented and validated a fluid model that simulates traffic flow in mobile ad hoc networks. With this model, we finally implemented a simulation tool that enables fast algorithm and parameter analysis and can potentially be embedded in constrained nodes for in-flight mission re-evaluation. The fluid model can scale to large topologies with hundreds of nodes and could complete experiments running stress workloads with simulation time shorter than the simulation time horizon. It can also be configured with bounded and unbounded network queues, use mixed mobility models and control laws, and model different applications running in the application layer mixed with synthetic traffic injection. By studying different control laws, we can reduce the probability of enduring network partitions and enhance the traffic balance to reduce the formation of bottlenecks that hinder the application's performance.Our work also encompassed the proposal of some applications related to the domain of UTM, such as optimized edge-assisted offloading algorithms for swarms of UAVs that can be potentially used for UTM Distributed Detect and Avoid systems. Moreover, we also propose a distributed position tracking data layer for very low-level airspace using State Machine Replication and could achieve low end-to-end latencies even with a high number of replicas.

The method offers the novel concept of Interpolated Event data types applied to Kahn Process Networks in order to provide simulator coordination. This can enable conservative and optimistic coordination of multiple heterogeneous and homogeneous simulators, but provide important benefits for CPS simulation, such as the opportunity to reduce functional requirements for simulator interfacing compared to existing solutions. The method is analyzed in theoretical properties and instantiated in software tools SimConnect and SimTalk. Finally, an experimental study applies the method and tools to accelerate Spice circuit simulation with tradeoffs in speed versus accuracy, and demonstrates the coordination of three heterogeneous simulators for a CPS simulation with increasing component model refinement and realism.

CPS have become ubiquitous in society and are taking roles with important safety and reliability concerns. To address these concerns, many types of tools and design methodologies are being developed specifically for cyber-physical systems. This thesis introduces the concept of model based assertions, a programming construct for capturing the physical behavior of the system in the cyber side of the system by using numerical models to represent the physical system characteristics of interest. The model based assertions are proposed to be used for the verification and validation of CPS software. In order to set up discussion of model based assertions, several definitions of cyber-physical systems from researchers in the area are presented and discussed along with a brief overview of tools for cyber-physical system design, modeling, and evaluation. A robotic ground vehicle is adopted as a cyber-physical system test platform, as it displays the critical characteristics of a CPS. In order to formulate example model based assertions, three different types of numerical models of the robotic vehicle are introduced and discussed with bond graphs used as an approach for deriving state equations which describe the physical system dynamics. After introducing the numerical models, three examples of using model based assertions for tests with the robotic vehicle platform are presented. In the examples, model based assertions are used to verify expected motion of the vehicle and predict when the vehicle is going to slip during advanced maneuvers, both using preprocessed model simulations and real-time slip prediction during program execution. The thesis concludes with discussing possible use cases of model based assertions and situations where the assertions could present useful information to a cyber-physical system designer. Finally, future work related to developing model based assertions for additional applications is discussed.

Book excerpt: Distributed simulations have been widely applied as the method to study complex systems which are analytically intractable and numerically prohibitive to evaluate. However it is not a trivia task to develop distributed simulations. Besides distributed simulations may introduce difficulties for analysis due to decentralized, heterogeneous data sources. It is important to integrate these data sources seamlessly for analysis. In applications for system design, it is required to explore the alternatives of hardware components, algorithms, and simulation models. How to enable these operations conveniently is critical for the distributed system as well. All these challenges raise the need of a workbench that facilitates rapid composition, evaluation, modification and validation of components in a distributed system. This dissertation proposes a platform for these challenges, which we refer to the SPEED-CS platform. The architecture of the platform consists of multiple layers that include network layer, component management layer, components layer, and modeling layer. It is a multi-agent system (MAS), containing static agents and mobile agents. The mobile agent is referred as the Data Exchange Agent, which is able to visit sub-simulations and has the intelligence to find the useful data for output analysis. Experiments show that the MAS requires much less network bandwidth than the"centralized"system does, in which simulations report data to output analyst. The application of the SPEED-CS platform is extended to handle systems with dynamic data sources. We demonstrate that the platform can be used for parallel reality applications where simulation parameters can be updated according to real-time sensor information. Data exchange agents are involved to manage the collection, dissemination, and analysis of data from dynamic data sources including simulations and/or physical systems. The SPEED-CS platform is also implemented to integrate simulations and optimizations. The system is able to provide services to facilitate distributed computing, event services, naming services, and component management. One of the important features is that the component sets can be updated and enlarged with different models adding in. This feature enables the platform to work as a testbed to explore alternatives of system designs. Finally we conclude this dissertation with several future research topics.
