The effect of particle collisions is evident in the results of the simulations. Increasing the neutral density of the simulation does not have a major impact on the results in the plume region. Outside the plume region the particle collisions can affect the results by an order of magnitude or greater.

Book excerpt: An improved understanding of plasma inter-particle and particle-wall interactions is critical to the advancement of plasma devices used for space electric propulsion, fusion, high-power communications, and next-generation energy systems. Two interactions of particular importance are (1) ion-atom collisions in the plasma bulk and (2) secondary electron emission from plasma-facing materials. For ion-atom collisions, interactions between fast ions and slow atoms are commonly dominated by charge-exchange and momentum-exchange collisions that are important to understanding the performance and behavior of many plasma devices. To investigate this behavior, this work developed a simple, well-characterized experiment that accurately measures the effects of high energy xenon ions incident on a background of xenon neutral atoms. By comparing these results to both analytical and computational models of ion-atom interactions, we discovered the importance of (1) accurately treating the differential cross-sections for momentum-exchange and charge-exchange collisions over all neutral background pressures, and (2) commonly overlooked interactions, including ion-induced electron emission and neutral-neutral ionization collisions, at high pressures. Data provide vital information on the angular scattering distributions of charge-exchange and momentum-exchange ions at 1.5 keV relevant for ion thrusters, and serve as canonical data for validation of plasma models. This work also investigates electron-induced secondary electron emission behavior relevant to materials commonly considered for plasma thrusters, fusion systems, and many other plasma devices. For such applications, secondary electron emission can alter the sheath potential, which can significantly affect device performance and life. Secondary electron emission properties were measured for materials that are critical to the efficient operation of many plasma devices, including: graphite (for tokamaks, ion thrusters, and traveling wave tubes), lithium (for tokamak walls), tungsten (the most promising material for future tokamaks such as ITER), and nickel (for plasma-enhanced chemistry). Measurements were made for incident electron energies up to 1.5 keV and angles between 0 and 78i . The most significant results from these measurements are as follows: (1) first-ever measurements of naturally-forming tungsten fuzz show a more than 40% reduction in secondary electron emission and an independence on incidence angle; (2) original measurements of lithium oxide show a 2x and 6x increase in secondary electron emission for 17% and 100% oxidation; and (3) unique measurements of Ni(110) single crystal show extrema in secondary electron emission when incidence angle is varied and an up to 36% increase at 0i over polycrystalline nickel. Each of these results are important discoveries for improving plasma devices. For example, from (1), the growth of tungsten fuzz in tokamaks is desirable for minimizing adverse secondary electron emission effects. From (2), the opposite is true for tokamaks with lithium coatings which are oxidized by typical residual gases. From (3), secondary electron emission from Ni(110) catalysts in plasma-enhanced chemistry may facilitate further reactions.

Book excerpt: Energy and space propulsion are two of the largest applied research areas requiring contributions from fundamental physical sciences, due to the growing world-wide demand in energy and continuing interests in expanding the frontier of deep space exploration. One of the common thrust areas in these two disciplines is plasma physics, the study of the motion of charged particles and their interaction with the electromagnetic field. The characterization of these plasma systems requires a comprehensive understanding of the physics of charged particles, collisional and radiative interactions among these particles, and how they interact with the electromagnetic field. This dissertation presents some advances in the development of hydrodynamic models for plasma modeling and simulations in highly non-equilibrium conditions. Expressed in the form of conversation laws, these governing equations are solved by a finite volume discretization with a high-order reconstruction procedure and a multi-stage time integration method. High-fidelity collisional-radiative (CR) models are constructed by taking into account various elementary processes responsible for the excitation and ionization kinetics. The accuracy of the CR model is benchmarked against different experimental shock tube data, and yields satisfactory agreement for a wide range of flow conditions. A mechanism reduction scheme, based on a level grouping approach, is derived to lower the complexity of the CR kinetics while maintaining sufficient accuracy to capture the non-equilibrium dynamics of the plasma kinetics. The method is shown to be more accurate and efficient than standard level grouping approach, and is suitable for multidimensional flow calculations. Although the hydrodynamic or fluid approach offers a convenient way to model the system, it requires some assumptions on the time and length scales, which in some case might be violated. Fortunately, small deviations from these assumptions can still be captured by extending the fluid equations to multi-fluid equations, which characterize the plasma species (ions and electrons) via their own set of conservation laws. The extension of the CR model to the multi-fluid regime requires a new derivation for exchange source terms. A model for excitation and deexcitation collisions within the multi-fluid framework is derived, starting from kinetic theory, where the model obeys the principle of detailed balance. The multi-fluid equations developed in the current work are used to study ion acceleration in laser-plasma interaction. The role of the laser parameters and the mechanism of the acceleration are examined in detail, demonstrating the capabilities of this computational framework.

Book excerpt: The collision and subsequent interaction of counter-streaming plasmas occurs in several areas of laser-plasma research including double foil targets for x-ray lasers and the plasma blow-off inside ICF hohlraums. Because a single fluid model allows for only one value of the flow velocity at any one spatial location, interpenetration of the plamas is not allowed resulting in immediate stagnation with complete conversion of the ion-streaming kinetic energy to thermal energy. Multifluid models have been developed which employ multiple ion fluid species that interact through the self-consistent electrostatic field and collisional coupling. Because they are approximations to a kinetic situation, the form of these coupling coefficients is not unique, with various workers using differing approximations. More recently, Larroche has implemented a finite difference approach to the ion Fokker-Planck equation while Jones and co-workers have performed two-dimensional simulations of colliding plasmas using a particle-in-cell code with a new collisional model. Our kinetic modeling also makes use of particle in cell (PIC) techniques with Monte Carlo (MC) particle-particle collisions algorithm that is equivalent to the Fokker-Planck collision operator. We have made direct comparison of this MC-PIC model to multifluid simulations on both simple slowing-down and equilibration problems as well as problems characteristic of laser generated colliding plasmas. These comparisons have established the validity of the multifluid model as well as aided in the development of the kinetic capability for more challenging geometries.

Simulations of laser-driven wakefields with low ((almost equal to)1016 W/cm2) and high ((almost equal to)1018 W/cm2) peak intensity laser pulses are conducted in slab geometry, showing agreement with theory and fluid simulations. Simulations of the E-157 beam wakefield experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, in which a 30 GeV electron beam passes through 1 m of preionized lithium plasma, are conducted in cylindrical geometry, obtaining good agreement with previous work. We briefly describe some of the more significant modifications of XOOPIC required by this work, and summarize the issues relevant to modeling relativistic electron-neutral collisions in a particle-in-cell code.
