Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CE TRAVAIL TRAITE DE LA MODELISATION MATHEMATIQUE ET NUMERIQUE D'UNE TORCHE A PLASMA A COURANT CONTINU. LE MODELE EST BASE SUR LA RESOLUTION DES EQUATIONS DE L'HYDRODYNAMIQUE ET DE L'ELECTROMAGNETISME PAR LA METHODE DES VOLUMES FINIS DE PATANKAR. CES EQUATIONS SONT ECRITES EN SUPPOSANT L'EQUILIBRE THERMODYNAMIQUE LOCAL, UNE SYMETRIE CYLINDRIQUE ET UN ECOULEMENT STATIONNAIRE. L'ORIGINALITE DE CES TRAVAUX RESIDE DANS LE FAIT QUE LA MODELISATION PORTE NON SEULEMENT SUR LA ZONE DE JET MAIS AUSSI SUR LA ZONE INTER-ELECTRODES. DANS LA PREMIERE PARTIE DE L'ETUDE LE REGIME DE L'ECOULEMENT EST SUPPOSE LAMINAIRE. IL EST ALORS MONTRE L'INFLUENCE DES PARAMETRES DE FONCTIONNEMENT COMME L'INTENSITE DU COURANT D'ARC, LE DEBIT DU GAZ PLASMAGENE ET LA NATURE DU GAZ ENVIRONNANT. DANS LA DEUXIEME PARTIE, LE PHENOMENE DE TURBULENCE EST PRIS EN COMPTE A TRAVERS DIFFERENTS MODELES : LONGUEUR DE MELANGE ET K-. OUTRE LES CONSEQUENCES DE LA TURBULENCE SUR LES PROPRIETES DU JET DE PLASMA, IL EST MIS EN EVIDENCE L'IMPORTANCE DES CONDITIONS AUX LIMITES ASSOCIEES A LA TURBULENCE ET LES DIFFICULTES DE LEUR APPLICABILITE. LA TROISIEME PARTIE EST CONSACREE A LA VALIDATION DU MODELE PAR DES RESULTATS EXPERIMENTAUX OBTENUS AU SEIN DU LABORATOIRE ET DANS LA LITTERATURE. CETTE COMPARAISON LAISSE APPARAITRE UN ACCORD SATISFAISANT SUR LES PROFILS DE TEMPERATURE MAIS EGALEMENT LES LIMITES DU MODELE DE LA TORCHE LIEES A L'HYPOTHESE DE L'EQUILIBRE THERMODYNAMIQUE LOCAL ET A LA CONDITION D'ACCROCHAGE DU PIED D'ARC ANODIQUE. LA DERNIERE PARTIE DE CETTE ETUDE EST CONSACREE A L'ETUDE, PAR LA METHODE PSI-CELL, DE L'INFLUENCE DE L'INJECTION DE PARTICULES D'ALUMINE, DE FER ET DE TUNGSTENE DANS LE JET DE PLASMA. IL EST MONTRE QUE CETTE INJECTION CONDUIT A UN REFROIDISSEMENT DU PLASMA ET QUE LE DIAMETRE ET LE DEBIT MASSIQUE DES PARTICULES INFLUENCENT FORTEMENT LES TRAJECTOIRES ET LA QUALITE DU TRAITEMENT THERMIQUE DE CES PARTICULES.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing. house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 25 (thesis year 1980) a total of 10,308 theses titles from 27 Canadian and 214 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 25 reports theses submitted in 1980, on occasion, certain universities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Simplified Signs presents a system of manual sign communication intended for special populations who have had limited success mastering spoken or full sign languages. It is the culmination of over twenty years of research and development by the authors. The Simplified Sign System has been developed and tested for ease of sign comprehension, memorization, and formation by limiting the complexity of the motor skills required to form each sign, and by ensuring that each sign visually resembles the meaning it conveys. Volume 1 outlines the research underpinning and informing the project, and places the Simplified Sign System in a wider context of sign usage, historically and by different populations. Volume 2 presents the lexicon of signs, totaling approximately 1000 signs, each with a clear illustration and a written description of how the sign is formed, as well as a memory aid that connects the sign visually to the meaning that it conveys. While the Simplified Sign System originally was developed to meet the needs of persons with intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, autism, or aphasia, it may also assist the communication needs of a wider audience - such as healthcare professionals, aid workers, military personnel, travellers or parents, and children who have not yet mastered spoken language. The system also has been shown to enhance learning for individuals studying a foreign language. Lucid and comprehensive, this work constitutes a valuable resource that will enhance the communicative interactions of many different people, and will be of great interest to researchers and educators alike. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic monograph on unsteady transonic flow — the flow of air encountered at speeds at or near the speed of sound — is of continuing interest to students and professionals in aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, and other areas of applied mathematics. After a brief Introduction, Swedish physicist Mårten T. Landahl presents a chapter in which the two-dimensional solution is derived, succeeded by a discussion of its relation to the subsonic and supersonic solutions. Three chapters on low aspect ratio configurations follow, covering triangular wings and similar planforms with curved leading edges, rectangular wings, and cropped delta wings, and low aspect ratio wing-body combinations. The treatment concludes with a consideration of the experimental determination of air forces on oscillating wings at transonic speeds.

The approach is a linguistic one: the different aspects of the English used in the field of agriculture (agricultural practices, agricultural systems) and in some fields related to agriculture (agricultural zoology, agri-tourism, biology, botany, ecology, entomology, gastronomy, land measurement, plant pathology, zoology) are analysed from a morphological (combination, derivation), syntactical (nominal phrases, verbal phrases), lexical and lexicographical, semantic (homonymy, semantic fields, synonymy, terminology), pragmatic (academic discourse, idiom, metaphor), etymological (etymon, Latin heritage), and contrastive (English–Croatian, English–French, English–German, English–Romanian, Romanian–English) points of view. The book will appeal to agriculturists, animal breeders, professors, researchers, students, and translators from Croatian-, English-, French-, German-, and Romanian-speaking countries, active in their own countries or abroad. The types of academic readership it would appeal to include academic teaching staff, researchers and students in the fields of agriculture and related fields – agricultural zoology, agri-tourism, biology, botany, ecology, entomology, gastronomy, land measurement, plant pathology, and zoology.
