Par ailleurs, l'amélioration de la productivité, et la maitrise du fonctionnement des réacteurs de polymérisation sont essentielles. L’optimisation et la commande des procédés de polymérisation revêtent par conséquent une très grande importance pour l'industrie des polymères. En raison des difficultés de modélisation, de la forte non linéarité des systèmes mis en jeu, du manque de mesures en ligne, l'optimisation et la commande de ces réacteurs sont cependant particulièrement ardues. Ceci est d'autant plus vrai pour des procédés complexes tels que la polymérisation en émulsion. Cette étude porte sur l'optimisation dynamique et la commande non linéaire d'un réacteur discontinu de copolymérisation en émulsion du styrène et de l'alpha-méthylstyrène. Un modèle dynamique du système, indispensable au développement d'algorithmes d'optimisation et de commande non linéaire, à d'abord été développé. Il s'agit d'un modèle de tendance, qui permet la description des principales variables du procède. L’optimisation dynamique a consisté à rechercher des profils de température permettant de maximiser la productivité, tout en imposant des contraintes sur la qualité du produit final et sur la capacité de refroidissement du réacteur. Elle a montré que, pour une réaction de polymérisation en émulsion, cet objectif pouvait être réalisé en maintenant une température maximale pendant l'étape de nucléation, et en diminuant ensuite la température suivant la masse molaire souhaitée du polymère final. Une étude en simulation de la commande non linéaire géométrique du réacteur a montré de bonnes performances de ce type de commande pour la poursuite de profils de température. Un estimateur d'état est par ailleurs indispensable pour effectuer une telle commande : le filtre de Kalman étendu a été utilisé et a permis une bonne estimation des principales variables. Enfin, l'étude expérimentale a permis de valider les différentes étapes du travail.

Book excerpt: Cette thèse a pour objet l'étude et la modélisation de procédés de polymérisation en émulsion. La première étape consiste à formuler un modèle pour un monomère assez soluble dans l'eau puis à généraliser cette approche au cas d'un système de terpolymère particulier dont l'un des monomères peut dépropager. La première partie est consacrée à l'homopolymérisation du méthacrylate de méthyle en présence de dodécyle sulfate de sodium et de persulfate de potassium. Le premier chapitre traite de l'homopolymérisation en réacteur fermé à 50 °C. Le système réactionnel a été étudié à différentes températures en présence d'un agent de transfert le n-C12 mercaptan. Un modèle général a été développé pour des concentrations initiales en émulsifiant supérieures à la concentration micellaire critique. La modélisation concerne la prédiction des conversions, des masses molaires moyennes, des tailles et des concentrations de particules. Les paramètres du modèle ont été identifiés sur un grand nombre d'expériences et de caractéristiques indépendantes telles que les conversion globales, les masses molaires moyennes, les tailles des particules dans le latex. Le deuxième chapitre généralise le modèle développé au cas des polymérisations semi-continues. Les procédés semi-continus ensemencés avec ajout de monomère pur et de préémulsion ont été étudiées à 50°C et modélisés. La deuxième partie concerne la terpolymérisation en émulsion du système [alpha]-méthylstyrène / styrène / méthacrylate de méthyle en présence d'un inhibiteur radicalaire le 4-ter-butyl catéchol en réacteur fermé. Le poly ([alpha]-méthylstyrène) a une température de transition vitreuse de 177 °C contre 100 °C pour le poly(styrène). L'[alpha]-méthylstyrène, à cause de sa température plafond faible (61 °C), ne peut pas homopolymériser par voie radicalaire. Par contre il copolymérise avec le styrène et le méthacrylate de méthyle. Le modèle de terpolymérisation prédit les conversions, les masses molaires moyennes, les tailles et les concentrations de particules, les fractions d'incorporation dans le terpolymère et les températures de transition vitreuse.
