Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concern of economists and location theorists for the problem of public facility location is growing rapidly. The present collection of essays aims to provide an overview of the problem both from the perspective of economic theory and operations research. A study of some basic ingredients of a public space theory and one on the main tools for spatial decision-making are offered. This is reflected in the content of the book, which is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the theory of local public goods and with public decision-making procedures in the spatial context. A survey of the current literature on local public goods is proposed and contributed papers follow which are devoted to particular aspects or to a critical discussion of the main approaches. Voting procedures in a spatial context are reviewed and extended. Then follows an application of planning theory to public goods in space. The second part is relative to the operational analysis of locational decisions in the public sector. The major models and methods are reviewed; their computational efficiency is reported on and some of their fundamental properties are discussed. Location-allocation models are analyzed and criticized from the welfare economics standpoint and some suggestions are made for future research. The book addresses a large audience, including economists, regional scientists, operations researchers and geographers interested in the theory of public space and spatial planning.

Book excerpt: Urban Drainage: A Multilingual Glossary has been written by research engineers and scientists with substantial experience in the urban drainage field. It provides definitive descriptions of urban drainage terms in English, French, Japanese and German, giving guidance on their appropriate usage and context. The glossary also contains many diagrams, tables and technical discussions, and is a very practical tool to facilitate international technical communication in the urban drainage field. Containing well over 850 commonly-used terms in urban drainage, all expressed in a user-friendly manner, the book serves as a valuable resource for both practitioner and academic. Topics covered include: urban hydrology/hydraulics sewerage surface water runoff pollution (groundwater and surface) receiving waters ecology ecotoxicology best management practices urban water resource management Urban Drainage: A Multilingual Glossary represents an initiative of the joint IWA/IAHR Committee on Urban Drainage and has arisen out of the long-standing terminological and tautological difficulties of many terms in common usage within international urban drainage practice. It will be of great use and interest to scientists, engineers and ecologists, professionals and students working in urban hydrology/hydraulics, urban water resource management and regulation, urban planning and ecology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Systems Analysis and Computing in Water Quality Management, Held in Gent, Belgium, 18-20 September 2000. The focus of the IWA Specialist Group on Systems Analysis and Computing is essentially methodological. Its goal is to foster discussion of the interdisciplinary issues cutting across the many topics of interest within IWA. Consequently, the themes of the symposium did not reflect specific concerns with sewers, or wastewater treatment, or river basin management, or surface water quality, or groundwater contamination. Rather the symposium was organised along the lines of new models, decision support systems, uncertainty and risk analysis, integrated urban wastewater systems, operations and control, sensors and monitoring, optimal experimental design methodologies, model selection and calibration techniques, and time-series analysis. Evidently, the papers may each have case-specific aspects but they also highlight matters of methodology that are common to all, with a distinctly interdisciplinary character. There was an open call for papers, resulting in abstracts from 30 countries around the world. Papers for oral and poster presentation at the symposium were selected by the Programme Committee from full papers. They were reviewed again and 47 of them were finally included in these proceedings. Notably, 8 of the contributions were selected among the posters through a competition announced prior to the Symposium. The collection of papers in these proceedings are a comprehensive update that will prove invaluable for those working in the fields of environmental engineering, river basin management, aquatic ecology, process optimisation, data mining, planning and monitoring.

Book excerpt: The microbial complexity and the functions of the biomass present in activated sludge and biofilm systems were the subject matter of the 3rd Conference on Microorganisms in Activated Sludge and Biofilm Processes. Detailed knowledge of the identity, physiology and ecology of the microorganisms involved is central to any attempts to modify the composition of the biomass and hence optimise its performance. The Conference covered a wide range of topics dealing with the microbiology and microbial processes in activated sludge and biofilms, including sessions on newly identified microorganisms, microbial selection mechanisms and biomass storage processes. Many of these papers reported on the use of new molecular biological tools that directly address the population structure, dynamics and function of microbial communities. Other sessions dealt with work solving problems and improving performance in full-scale treatment plants and industrial wastewater treatment processes. From the extensive programme, a full peer review has selected for these proceedings 88 of the very best papers on the following topics: microbial dynamics; filamentous bacteria; polyphosphate and glycogen accumulating microorganisms; biofilm composition and processes; nitrifiers and denitrifiers; storage processes in biomass; biomass characterization; microbiology and biochemistry; full-scale experiences; foaming; industrial wastes. Together they form an unrivalled summary of work by the world?s leading experts to research the microbiological basis of wastewater treatment and improve the design and operation of biological processes. These proceedings are an essential reference for engineers, chemists, microbiologists and plant operators researching or applying activated sludge or biofilm techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that literally billions of residents in urban and peri-urban areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America are served by onsite sanitation systems (e.g. various types of latrines and septic tanks). Until recently, the management of faecal sludge from these onsite systems has been grossly neglected, partially as a result of them being considered temporary solutions until sewer-based systems could be implemented. However, the perception of onsite or decentralized sanitation technologies for urban areas is gradually changing, and is increasingly being considered as long-term, sustainable options in urban areas, especially in low- and middle-income countries that lack sewer infrastructures. This is the first book dedicated to faecal sludge management. It compiles the current state of knowledge of the rapidly evolving field of faecal sludge management, and presents an integrated approach that includes technology, management, and planning based on Sandecs 20 years of experience in the field. Faecal Sludge Management: Systems Approach for Implementation and Operation addresses the organization of the entire faecal sludge management service chain, from the collection and transport of sludge, and the current state of knowledge of treatment options, to the final end use or disposal of treated sludge. The book also presents important factors to consider when evaluating and upscaling new treatment technology options. The book is designed for undergraduate and graduate students, and engineers and practitioners in the field who have some basic knowledge of environmental and/or wastewater engineering.
