This book was released on 2021-06-27 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As reservoir sedimentation has proven to be a serious problem in South Africa, research in this field has been ongoing for more than 70 years. This publication emanates from extensive research which has been undertaken over the past 30 years with the support of the South African Department of Water and Sanitation as well as the South African Water Research Commission. A great deal of information has fortunately also been obtained from China. Given the universal nature of hydraulic formulae it is not surprising, yet gratifying, that Chinese and South African data generally conform to the same mathematical relationships. This indicates that these relationships should be applicable in other countries as well. Much of the information contained here has been condensed from a more comprehensive publication. This ICOLD Bulletin follows on Bulletin 115 “Dealing with reservoir sedimentation”, which gave guidelines for management of reservoirs to limit sedimentation. The guidelines on mathematical modelling of sediment transport dynamics in reservoirs in this document can be used during the planning and design of new dams, as well as for the management of existing dams.

GERSHON As with Volume 1 in this series, this book was inspired by the Symposium on "Communications and Computer Aided Systems" held at the 14th International CODATA Conference in September 1994 in Chambery, France. This book was conceived and influenced by the discussions at the Symposium and most of the contributions were written following the Conference. Whereas the first volume dealt with the numerous challenges facing the information revolution, especially its communication aspects, this one provides an insight into the recent tools provided by computer science for handling the complex aspects of scientific and technological data. This volume, "Modeling Complex Data for Creating Information," is concerned with real and virtual objects often involved with data handling processes encountered frequently in modeling physical phenomena and systems behavior. Topics concerning modeling complex data for creating information include: • Object oriented approach for structuring data and knowledge • Imprecision and uncertainty in information systems • Fractal modeling and shape and surface processing • Symmetry applications for molecular data The choice of these topics reflects recent developments in information systems technologies. One example is object oriented technology. Recently, research, development and applications have been using object-oriented modeling for computer handling of data and data management. Object oriented technology offers increasingly easy-to-use software applications and operating systems. As a result, science and technology research and applications can now provide more flexible and effective services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: In recent decades, the biosphere has become increasingly stressed, often beyond the point where the internal structure and function of ecosystems are sustained. We have experienced an intensified “exploration” of natural system resources to support agricultural and forest production, to provide water for human consumption, to supply the needs of industrial processes, and to provide, in addition, attractive, diverse landscapes for recreation and tourism. Exceeding thresholds via anthropogenic disturbance that results in degradation of ecosystems is dangerous, since the system-level effects and feedbacks (e.g., soil erosion, famine, polluted drinking water, etc.) are highly undesirable. Finding appropriate compromises in resource use that satisfy existing competitive interests and result in sound environmental management, especially in densely populated regions, requires an improved understanding of the trade-offs that accompany changes in “exploitation” or altered resource allocation at regional and landscape scales. Progress on landscape-level understanding of coupled water, carbon, and nitrogen budgets is limited by a lack of commitment to a rigorous development and application of synthetic techniques (e.g., strongly linked remote sensing studies, geographic information system applications, computer simulation modeling, and ecosystem experimentation) more than by basic site-level measurement alone. Possible research approaches that will contribute to new use of ecosystem knowledge in a landscape and regional context were considered by this Dahlem Workshop. The importance of conducting improved landscape and regional assessment of ecosystem function as input to global scale efforts of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme is a major theme of this book.

This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Turbulence modelling has long been, and will remain, one of the most important t- ics in turbulence research, challenging scientists and engineers in the academic world and in the industrial society. Over the past decade, Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) and other hybrid RANS-LES methods have received increasing attention from the turbulence-research community, as well as from industrial CFD engineers. Indeed, as an engineering modelling approach, hybrid RANS-LES methods have acquired a remarkable profile in modelling turbulent flows of industrial interest in relation to, for example, transportation, energy production and the environment. The advantage exploited with hybrid RANS-LES modelling approaches, being - tentially more computationally efficient than LES and more accurate than (unsteady) RANS, has motivated numerous research and development activities. These activities, together with industrial applications, have been further facilitated over the recent years by the rapid development of modern computing resources. As a European initiative, the EU project DESider (Detached Eddy Simulation for Industrial Aerodynamics, 2004-2007), has been one of the earliest and most systematic international R&D effort with its focus on development, improvement and applications of a variety of existing and new hybrid RANS-LES modelling approaches, as well as on related numerical issues. In association with the DESider project, two subsequent international symposia on hybrid RANS-LES methods have been arranged in Stockholm (Sweden, 2005) and in Corfu (Greece, 2007), respectively. The present book is a result of the Second Symposium on Hybrid RANS-LES Methods, held in Corfu, Greece, 17-18 June 2007.

Book excerpt: This book provides the fundamental basics for solving fluid structure interaction problems, and describes different algorithms and numerical methods used to solve problems where fluid and structure can be weakly or strongly coupled. These approaches are illustrated with examples arising from industrial or academic applications. Each of these approaches has its own performance and limitations. The added mass technique is described first. Following this, for general coupling problems involving large deformation of the structure, the Navier-Stokes equations need to be solved in a moving mesh using an ALE formulation. The main aspects of the fluid structure coupling are then developed. The first and by far simplest coupling method is explicit partitioned coupling. In order to preserve the flexibility and modularity that are inherent in the partitioned coupling, we also describe the implicit partitioned coupling using an iterative process. In order to reduce computational time for large-scale problems, an introduction to the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) technique applied to FSI problems is also presented. To extend the application of coupling problems, mathematical descriptions and numerical simulations of multiphase problems using level set techniques for interface tracking are presented and illustrated using specific coupling problems. Given the book's comprehensive coverage, engineers, graduate students and researchers involved in the simulation of practical fluid structure interaction problems will find this book extremely useful.
