Book Synopsis Finite Element Simulation in Surface and Subsurface Hydrology by : George F. Pinder
Download or read book Finite Element Simulation in Surface and Subsurface Hydrology written by George F. Pinder and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite Element Simulation in Surface and Subsurface Hydrology provides an introduction to the finite element method and how the method is applied to problems in surface and subsurface hydrology. The book presents the basic concepts of the numerical methods and the finite element approach; applications to problems on groundwater flow and mass and energy transport; and applications to problems that involve surface water dynamics. Computational methods for the solution of differential equations; classification of partial differential equations; finite difference and weighted residual integral techniques; and The Galerkin finite element method are discussed as well. The text will be of value to engineers, hydrologists, and students in the field of engineering.
Download or read book Ocean Dynamics written by Dirk Olbers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean Dynamics’ is a concise introduction to the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, non-equilibrium thermodynamics and the common approximations for geophysical fluid dynamics, presenting a comprehensive approach to large-scale ocean circulation theory. The book is written on the physical and mathematical level of graduate students in theoretical courses of physical oceanography, meteorology and environmental physics. An extensive bibliography and index, extensive side notes and recommendations for further reading, and a comparison with the specific atmospheric physics where applicable, makes this volume also a useful reading for researchers. Each of the four parts of the book – fundamental laws, common approximations, ocean waves, oceanic turbulence and eddies, and selected aspects of ocean dynamics – starts with elementary considerations, blending then classical topics with more advanced developments of fluid mechanics and theoretical oceanography. The last part covers the theory of the global wind-driven circulation in homogeneous and stratified regimes, the circulation and overturning in the Southern Ocean, and the global meridional overturning and thermohaline-driven circulation. Emphasis is placed on simple physical models rather than access to extensive numerical results, enabling students to understand and reproduce the complex theory mostly by analytical means. All equations and models are derived in detail and illustrated by numerous figures. The appendix provides short excursions into the mathematical background, such as vector analysis, statistics, and differential equations

Book Synopsis Dynamics of Marine Sands by : Richard Soulsby
Download or read book Dynamics of Marine Sands written by Richard Soulsby and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1997 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practical engineer looking for an urgent solution to a sediment-related project often finds that the results of the relevant academic research are published in unfamiliar language in publications that are not easily available. Dynamics of marine sands bridges the gap between academic research and practical applications by summarising the research results in a unified form, backed up with worked examples and case studies. This comprehensive new book presents methods for calculating the various hydrodynamic and sediment dynamic quantities necessary for marine sediment transport applications, and recommends the most appropriate methods to use for engineering projects.

Book Synopsis The Bunker Climate Atlas of the North Atlantic Ocean by : Hans-Jörg Isemer
Download or read book The Bunker Climate Atlas of the North Atlantic Ocean written by Hans-Jörg Isemer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987-07-24 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Meteorology has a long tradition, and studies of surface meteorological conditions have been published repeatedly since the end of the last century. Recently, the demand has grown for more detailed descriptions. This stems both from the public's interest in climatic change and from our growing ability to analyse atmospheric and oceanic processes with the aid of numerical models. These models require input data on a regular, finely spaced grid; the increased amount of oceanic data available permits us to provide detailed charts both of surface meteorological conditions and of air-sea interactions. The present atlas deals with the surface climate of the North Atlantic Ocean from the equator to 65°N, in the period 1941 to 1972. It is based on data originally evaluated by Andrew F. Bunker of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He analysed observations from the ships of the Voluntary Observing Fleet in many parts of the world ocean to calculate the various components of the heat budget at the air-sea interface. When Bunker died in 1979, he left the major part of his data and results in an unpublished state. Since he had spent considerable effort on validating the data and calculating air-sea fluxes by the so-called individual method, it was considered worthwhile to make this unique set of climate data available to the scientific community. The observed meteorological quantities are presented in Volume 1 of this atlas. Volume 2 contains the air-sea interaction fluxes.
Book Synopsis Ancient Earthquakes by : M. Sintubin
Download or read book Ancient Earthquakes written by M. Sintubin and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ancient earthquakes are pre-instrumental earthquakes that can only be identified through indirect evidence in the archaeological (archaeoseismology) and geological (palaeoseismology) record. Special Paper 471 includes a selection of cases convincingly illustrating the different ways the archaeological record is used in earthquake studies. The first series of papers focuses on the relationship between human prehistory and tectonically active environments, and on the wide range of societal responses to historically known earthquakes. The bulk of papers concerns archaeoseismology, showing the diversity of approaches, the wide range of disciplines involved, and its potential to contribute to a better understanding of earthquake history. Ancient Earthquakes will be of interest to the broad community of earth scientists, seismologists, historians, and archaeologists active in and around archaeological sites in the many regions around the world threatened by seismic hazards. This Special Paper frames in the International Geoscience Programme IGCP 567 'Earthquake Archaeology: Archaeoseismology along the Alpine-Himalayan Seismic Zone.'"--Publisher's description.
