Book excerpt: Sample calculations were performed with a three-dimensional (3-D) finite-element model analysis that describe the response of an eddy current (EC) probe to steam generator (SG) tubing artifacts. Such calculations could be very helpful in understanding and interpreting of EC probe response to complex tube/defect geometries associated with the inservice inspection (ISI) of steam generator (SG) tubing. The governing field equations are in terms of coupled magnetic vector and electric scalar potentials in conducting media and of total or reduced scalar potentials in nonconducting regions. To establish the validity of the model, comparisons of the theoretical and experimental responses of an absolute bobbin probe are given for two types of calibration standard defects. Preliminary results are also presented from a recent theoretical study of the effect of ligament size in axial cracks on EC indications with conventional ISI bobbin probes.

Such calculations could be very helpful in understanding and interpreting the EC probe response to complex tube/defect geometries associated with longitudinal inner/outer notches, roll transitions, sludge, and through-wall holes in SG tubes. The governing field equations are derived in terms of coupled magnetic vector and electric scalar potentials in the conducting media and total or reduced scalar potentials in the non-conducting regions. To assess the validity of the model, we compared the signal responses for two numerical approaches, stored-energy-and-power-loss approach and magnetic-flux approach for various tube/defect geometries. Simulation results are also presented on the tube/defect geometries for the pancake coil response and the transmitter/receiver (T/R) probe response. The results indicate that the eddy-current NDE modeling is capable of predicting EC probe response to flaws in steam generator tubes.

Book excerpt: Computer programs have been written to allow the analysis of different types of eddy-current probes and their performance under different steam generator test conditions. The probe types include the differential bobbin probe, the absolute bobbin probe, the pancake probe and the reflection probe. The generator test conditions include tube supports, copper deposits, magnetite deposits, denting, wastage, pitting, cracking and IGA. These studies are based mostly on computed values, with the limited number of test specimens available used to verify the computed results. The instrument readings were computed for a complete matrix of the different test conditions, and then the test conditions determined as a function of the readings by a least-squares technique. A comparison was made of the errors in fit and instrument drift for the different probe types. The computations of the change in instrument reading due to the defects have led to an inversion'' technique in which the defect properties can be computed from the instrument readings. This has been done both experimentally and analytically for each of these probe types. 3 refs., 13 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: Simulations of ultrasonic inspection of engineered components have been performed at chalk river laboratories of aecl for over 10 years. the computer model, called ewe for elastic wave equations, solves those equations using a novel finite difference scheme. it simulates the propagation of an ultrasonic wave from the transducer to a flaw, the scatter of waves from the flaw, and measurement of signals at a receive transducer. regions of different materials, water and steel for example, can be simulated. in addition, regions with slightly different material properties from the parent material can be investigated. the two major types of output are displays of the ultrasonic waves inside the component and the corresponding amplitude or a-scans. the ewe model has been applied to the inspection of large pipes in a nuclear plant, gas pipeline welds and steam generator tubes. most recent work has dealt with the ultrasonic inspection of pressure tubes in candu reactors. pressure tube inspections can reliably detect and size defects; however, there are improvements that can be made. for example, knowing the sharpness of a flaw-tip is crucial for effective fitness-for-service assessments. computer modelling of the ultrasonic inspection of flaws with different root radii has suggested inspection techniques that provide flaw tip radius information. a preliminary investigation of these methods has been made in the laboratory. the basis for the model will be reviewed at the presentation. then the results of computer simulations will be displayed on a pc using an interactive program that analyzes simulated a-scans. this software tool gives operators direct access to the results of computer simulations.

Simultaneous variations in these test properties produce signals that are ambiguous in present commercial eddy-current instruments.
