Book excerpt: Although the role of the environment in generating spacecraft potential variations at geosynchronous orbit is well documented, variations in the ambient environment itself have not been well-defined. Similarly, no studies of the environment have attempted an analytic formulation of the various parameters needed to model the spacecraft charging phenomenon. This paper describes the parameters needed to formulate such a model and outlines a systematic procedure for constructing a simple analytic model that includes the effects of local time and geomagnetic activity. Observational data from the ATS- 5 satellite are analyzed using this procedure to give a preliminary analytic description of the geosynchronous environment in the form of a FORTRAN program.

Book excerpt: Data on the geosynchronous plasma environment derived from the UCSD plasma detectors on the ATS-5 and ATS-6 satellites have been carefully compiled into a pictorial atlas. The atlas consists of 12 days of data from 1969 (ATS-5), 38 days from 1970 (ATS-5), 37 days from 1974 (ATS-6), and 8 days from 1976 (ATS-6). The data are 10-min averages of the first four moments of the plasma distribution function for the electrons and ions. The data are presented in the form of spectrograms and line plots along with detailed ephemeris and geophysical information. Two computer tapes are available, the formats of which are given in an appendix.

Variations in the electron and ion currents and temperatures, as represented by the single Maxwellian component temperatures T(AVG) and T(RMS), are evaluated with respect to local time and geomagnetic activity. The potential on the satellites is similarly evaluated. Results indicate that the geosynchronous plasma cannot be adequately represented by a simple Maxwellian distribution and that, at the very least, a two component Maxwellian is necessary. The electron current and eclipse potential were found to vary strongly with K sub p while the temperatures only varied weakely. Local time variations in temperature and current were observed but these were outweighted by a significant local time variation in satellite potential which peaked near midnight. An explanation of these results is proposed in terms of a simple model of the time evolution of the plasma following an injection. (Author).

Book excerpt: Documents the science, the mission, the spacecraft and the instrumentation on a unique NASA mission to study the Earth’s dynamic, dangerous and fascinating Van Allen radiation belts that surround the planet This collection of articles provides broad and detailed information about NASA’s Van Allen Probes (formerly known as the Radiation Belt Storm Probes) twin-spacecraft Earth-orbiting mission. The mission has the objective of achieving predictive understanding of the dynamic, intense, energetic, dangerous, and presently unpredictable belts of energetic particles that are magnetically trapped in Earth’s space environment above the atmosphere. It documents the science of the radiation belts and the societal benefits of achieving predictive understanding. Detailed information is provided about the Van Allen Probes mission design, the spacecraft, the science investigations, and the onboard instrumentation that must all work together to make unprecedented measurements within a most unforgiving environment, the core of Earth’s most intense radiation regions. This volume is aimed at graduate students and researchers active in space science, solar-terrestrial interactions and studies of the upper atmosphere. Book excerpt: DawnDusk Asymmetries in Planetary Plasma Environments Dawn-dusk asymmetries are ubiquitous features of the plasma environment of many of the planets in our solar system. They occur when a particular process or feature is more pronounced at one side of a planet than the other. For example, recent observations indicate that Earth's magnetopause is thicker at dawn than at dusk. Likewise, auroral breakups at Earth are more likely to occur in the pre-midnight than post-midnight sectors. Increasing availability of remotely sensed and in situ measurements of planetary ionospheres, magnetospheres and their interfaces to the solar wind have revealed significant and persistent dawn-dusk asymmetries. As yet there is no consensus regarding the source of many of these asymmetries, nor the physical mechanisms by which they are produced and maintained. Volume highlights include: A comprehensive and updated overview of current knowledge about dawn-dusk asymmetries in the plasma environments of planets in our solar system and the mechanisms behind them Valuable contributions from internationally recognized experts, covering both observations, simulations and theories discussing all important aspects of dawn-dusk asymmetries Space weather effects are caused by processes in space, mainly the magnetotail, and can be highly localized on ground. Knowing where the source, i.e., where dawn-dusk location is will allow for a better prediction of where the effects on ground will be most pronounced Covering both observational and theoretical aspects of dawn dusk asymmetries, Dawn-Dusk Asymmetries in Planetary Plasma Environments will be a valuable resource for academic researchers in space physics, planetary science, astrophysics, physics, geophysics and earth science.

Book excerpt: A simple model for calculating the potential on a spacecraft by balancing the currents to and from the spacecraft surface is developed. The model, calibrated using ATS-5 plasma data during periods when the satellite was in the earth's shadow, is used to predict potentials on a shadowed, electrically isolated surface at geosynchronous orbit as a function of local time. Potentials are also predicted as the spacecraft moves into and out of the earth's shadow. The results indicate accuracies of + or - 800 V over a range of 10,000 V. (Author).
