Book excerpt: A systematic treatment of current crashworthiness practice in the automotive, railroad and aircraft industries. Structural, exterior and interior design, occupant biomechanics, seat and restraint systems are dealt with, taking account of statistical data, current regulations and state-of-the-art design tool capabilities. Occupant kinematics and biomechanics are reviewed, leading to a basic understanding of human tolerance to impact and of the use of anthropometric test dummies and mathematical modelling techniques. Different types of restraining systems are described in terms of impact biomechanics. The material and structural behaviour of vehicle components is discussed in relation to crash testing. A variety of commonly used techniques for simulating occupants and structures are presented, in particular the use of multibody dynamics, finite element methods and simplified macro-elements, in the context of design tools of increasing complexity, which can be used to model both vehicles and occupants. Audience: An excellent reference for researchers, engineers, students and all other professionals involved in crashworthiness work.

The model represents the human body by a series of connected bodies simulating the limbs, torso, head and neck of the human frame. The computer algorithms are developed using DYNACOMBSC̈ a three-dimensional multibody dynamics computer simulation model. DYNACOMBS provides a dynamic analysis of arbitrary collections of bodies allowing for both translation and rotation between adjacent bodies. The relative orientation of adjacent bodies is defined by Euler parameters to avoid computational problems of singularities, which occur with other orientation angles (such as Bryan angles or Euler angles). Thus there are distinct computational advantages of the presented model over other crash-victim simulators. The governing dynamical equations for the model are based upon Kaneis̄ equations and their associated kinematical quantities (partial velocities, partial angular velocities, generalized speeds, and lower body arrays). Formulations based upon Kaneis̄ equations are believed to be the most efficient and most reliable of the various methods available for studying large multibody systems. Consequently they are ideally suited for studying the dynamics of crash victims. The developed vehicle and victim model allows for arbitrary vehicle motion. Specifically, given the vehicle rollover motion, as would occur in an accident environment, the simulation predicts the vehicle occupant movement and the forces exerted on the occupant by the seat and seat belts. The model is validated by a series of recently recorded sets of experimental data from dummies and cadavers in a variety of vehicle crash conditions.

Therefore, the analysis of road accidents usually is performed by specialized experts. The knowledge required for this was published in the early 80s in a previous German edition of this book. Now a team of authors created the long overdue update. The authors are experts in their field and make their knowledge available in a contemporary representation. In this computer-aided methods of work are taken into accountas as well. The book is ideal as a reference, with an approach that's simple, clear, and easy to comprehend. As the mathematical and software-based modelling and analysis of vehicle crash scenarios have not been systematically investigated, this is an ideal source for further study. Numerous academic and industry studies have analyzed vehicle safety during physical crash scenarios, thus material responses during crashes serve as one of the most important performance indices for mechanical design problems. In addition to mathematical methodologies, this book provides thorough coverage of computer simulations, software-based modeling, and an analysis of methods capable of providing more flexibility. Unifies existing and emerging concepts concerning vehicle crash dynamics Provides a series of latest results in mathematical-based modeling from front and oblique perspectives Contains almost everything needed to capture the essence of model development and analysis for vehicle crash Includes both numerical and simulation results given in each chapter Presents a comprehensive, up-to-date reference that encourages further study

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to understand an occupant's often violent and complicated motion during rollover accidents, the motion of an anthropomorphic dummy was predicted dynamically using the Articulated Total Body model, a human body gross motion simulation program. The accuracy of the predicted motion was established by its favorable comparison to that recorded on high speed film during a 60 mph crash in which the vehicle rolled over four times. This vehicle motion was then modified to six other rollover crash situations for computer simulation. Significant changes in the predicted occupant motion were readily observed. Differences were also observed in occupant accelerations and impact and belt forces. Keywords: Computer simulation, Modeling, Biodynamics.

Book excerpt: Even though rear-end crashes are third among various collision types, occupant injuries from these incidents contribute for around one-third of all collisions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provides standards including the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) related to the vehicle structural crash responses as well as car occupant injuries. This thesis is mainly focused on the structural damage of a small compact car in Full-Width, Offset and Oblique-Offset Rear-End collisions, and evaluation of the potential neck injuries to the LEFT and RIGHT rear occupants of the car. To accomplish this, LS-DYNA simulations are performed using finite element (FE) models with rigid and deformable barriers according to the FMVSS 301 old and new regulations. Based on accelerations extracted at LEFT and RIGHT occupants, a car seat cabin configuration model in MADYMO with seat belt and a Hybrid-III 50th percentile dummy is developed. The occupant responses and kinematics of rear occupants (both LEFT and RIGHT) are examined in different rear end collisions including the Full-Width, Offset and Oblique-Offset rear end collisions. In addition to this Oblique-Offset Rear-Impact is also performed for better analysis of occupant responses at the near-side impact and the interaction of two rear occupants, to examine the proposed Oblique-Offset Rear-End Collision and to make recommendation on its use as regulatory standard. The results obtained from this study illustrates the difference of structural responses and evaluation of potential injuries of occupants in Full-Width, Offset, and Oblique-Offset Rear-End Collisions. The study also recommends that the Oblique-Offset Rear-Impact with two rear occupants to be part of the new Rear-End collision standard and that the secondary impact, including the Head Injury Criteria (HIC) to be evaluated for the occupants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This enhanced fourth edition of Dynamics of Multibody Systems includes an additional chapter that provides explanations of some of the fundamental issues addressed in the book, as well as new detailed derivations of some important problems. Many common mechanisms such as automobiles, space structures, robots and micromachines have mechanical and structural systems that consist of interconnected rigid and deformable components. The dynamics of these large-scale multibody systems are highly nonlinear, presenting complex problems that in most cases can only be solved with computer-based techniques. The book begins with a review of the basic ideas of kinematics and the dynamics of rigid and deformable bodies before moving on to more advanced topics and computer implementation. The book's wealth of examples and practical applications will be useful to graduate students, researchers and practising engineers working on a wide variety of flexible multibody systems.

In this work, two multibody dynamics models of the cervical spine of a 50th percentile male were developed using biofidelic variable intervertebral rotational stiffnesses. Furthermore, finite element simulations of a seated and restrained occupant in frontal, rear, and lateral collisions between two passenger cars were performed to determine the kinematics and kinetics response of the occupant. The resultant accelerations of the T1 vertebra were applied to the multibody dynamics models to obtain their true kinematic response. The multibody dynamics models and finite element models were used to estimate the risks of cervical injuries. Ligament injury was most likely at the interspinous ligament in frontal collision, the anterior longitudinal ligament in rear collision, and the near-side capsular ligament in lateral collision. The highest vertebral fracture risks were found in rear and lateral injuries, in the mid- and lower cervical spine.
