Book excerpt: Aerodynamic equations for the longitudinal motion of an aircraft with a horizontal tail were developed. In this development emphasis was given on obtaining model structure suitable for model identification from experimental data. The resulting aerodynamic models included unsteady effects in the form of linear indicial functions. These functions represented responses in the lift on the wing and tail alone, and interference between those two lifting surfaces. The effect of the wing on the tail was formulated for two different expressions concerning the downwash angle at the tail. The first expression used the Cowley-Glauert approximation known-as "lag-in-downwash," the second took into account growth of the wing circulation and delay in the development of the lift on the tail. Both approaches were demonstrated in two examples using the geometry of a fighter aircraft and a large transport. It was shown that the differences in the two downwash formulations would increase for an aircraft with long tail arm performing low-speed, rapid maneuvers.Klein, VladislavLangley Research CenterUNSTEADY AERODYNAMICS; AERODYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS; AERODYNAMIC STABILITY; LONGITUDINAL STABILITY; LIFT; PITCHING MOMENTS; WIND TUNNEL TESTS; BODY-WING AND TAIL CONFIGURATIONS; WINGS; TAIL ASSEMBLIES; DOWNWASH; FIGHTER AIRCRAFT

Book excerpt: A three-dimensional extension of the Mach Box technique was developed for the unsteady aerodynamic analysis of non-planar wings and wing-tail configurations in supersonic flow. Various refinement procedures were included to improve the accuracy of the results. A general purpose computer program was written for the CDC 6600. The program is capable of treating wing-tail combinations with or without vertical separation, longitudinal separation and dihedral on either surface. If a wing alone is treated, perturbation velocity components in the flow field may be found. Correlations with experimental flutter results were performed for several models tested in the low supersonic Mach number range. The methods are intended to be used by airplane designers to calculate with improved accuracy, the unsteady aerodynamic loads that act on a lifting surface being propelled at supersonic speeds. The new feature of these calculations is that the aerodynamic interference between the wing and tail was taken into account. These calculations are an essential ingredient of flutter analyses and will improve the confidence level of such calculations in preventing wing-tail flutter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief review of the unsteady aerodynamics in lifting surface theory is reported. For utility in design application, simplified but accurate analytical expressions were developed for generalized unsteady aerodynamics of wings of finite aspect ratio and sweep. This includes a means of calculating the unsteady lift load on the wing and tail surface of arbitrary shape and angle of attack variation. In addition, a formulation to include the indicial aerodynamics in the longitudinal equations of motion of the aircraft was performed. Sample numerical solutions to the longitudinal equations for a step input in elevator deflection are presented for the Navion aircraft. From these calculations, a noted difference in angle of attack and pitch rate response can be seen for the cases of unsteady and quasi-steady aerodynamics. The apparent increase in damping effects in the aircraft response due to the unsteady aerodynamics indicate that various design constraints might be relaxed somewhat if the unsteady aerodynamics is modeled properly. Book excerpt: Summary: An investigation of the power-off longitudinal stability characteristics of a tailless all-wing airplane model with various wing modifications has been made in the Langley free-flight tunnel. Force and tuft tests were made on the model in the original condition, with the wing tips rotated for washout, with rectangular and swept-forward tips, and with various slat arrangements. Flight tests were made with the original wing and with the original wing equipped with the most promising modifications. The results indicated that changes in tip plan form or rotation of the wing tips did not appreciably reduce the instability at high lift coefficients. Addition of wing slats, however, improved the longitudinal stability at the stall when the slat extended far enough inboard to cover the area that tended to stall first.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of unsteady aerodynamics is becoming a more attractive topic of research in enhancing flight capabilities. Natural flyers such as birds and insects can undergo flight maneuvers that are very difficult or not possible with current aerodynamic understanding. Modeling the unsteady phenomena produced by flapping wings is important to the understanding of these maneuvers, with possible applications to aircraft flight. We investigate reduced-order modeling of the unsteady aerodynamics generated by flapping wings using the two separate approaches of rotational lift and dynamic stall. A low order quasi steady model based on rotational lift and a revised version incorporating dynamic stall are presented. Both concepts are analyzed using simulated results, with experimental data measured with matching kinematics as a basis of comparison. This combined model is then used to conduct parametric studies of the time averaged aerodynamic forces over varying kinematic variables.

Book excerpt: The project concerns a subsonic investigation of a new type of flutter phenomenon, not previously critical from a design standpoint, involving elastic modes of the wing, fuselage, and stabilizer combination and also involving aerodynamic interference between the wing and horizontal tail. The effort, consisting of design of a flutter model, vibration and subsonic wind tunnel tests, and flutter analyses, was conducted to determine important controlling flutter parameters, to evaluate the accuracy of analyses for predicting the phenomenon, to establish flutter trends and to define flutter prevention design criteria which could be used in the early design stage to avoid the problem. Some of the important features that were determined are increasing wing sweep can lead to lower flutter speeds; wing bending to fuselage torsion frequency ratios were defined which provide the mechanical coupling essential to produce the phenomenon and minimum flutter speeds as a function of wing sweep angle; vertical separation or dihedral angle can be very influential and beneficial and is more important than longitudinal separation, the effects of which were found to be small to moderate; the effects of compressibility have been shown to be detrimental and decrease the flutter speed, and conclusive proof that the interference aerodynamics between the wind and tail, and particularly, the downwash shed from the wing, is an important and detrimental feature to the phenomenon.
