Book excerpt: Noise and Vibration affects all kinds of engineering structures, and is fast becoming an integral part of engineering courses at universities and colleges around the world. In this second edition, Michael Norton's classic text has been extensively updated to take into account recent developments in the field. Much of the new material has been provided by Denis Karczub, who joins Michael as second author for this edition. This book treats both noise and vibration in a single volume, with particular emphasis on wave-mode duality and interactions between sound waves and solid structures. There are numerous case studies, test cases, and examples for students to work through. The book is primarily intended as a textbook for senior level undergraduate and graduate courses, but is also a valuable reference for researchers and professionals looking to gain an overview of the field.

Book excerpt: This volume is a record of the proceedings of the Symposium on Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) held at the University of Southampton in July 1997 which was held under the auspices of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanic~. Theoretical SEA is form of modelling the vibrational and acoustical behaviour of complex mechanical systems which has undergone a long period of gestation before recent maturation into a widely used engineering design and analysis tool which is supported by a rapidly growing supply of commercial software. SEA also provides a framework for associated experimental measurement procedures, data analysis and interpretation. Under the guidance of the members of a distinguished International Scientific Committee, participants were individually invited from the broad spectrum of 'SEAfarers', including academics, consultants, industrial engineers, software developers and research students. The Symposium aimed to reflect the balance of world-wide activity in SEA, although some eminent members of the SEA community were, sadly, unable to attend. In particular, Professor Richard Lyon and Dr Gideon Maidanik, two of the principal originators of SEA, were sorely missed. This publication contains copies of all the papers presented to the Symposium together with a summary of the associated discussions which contains valuable comments upon the contents of the formal papers together with the views of participants on some fundamental issues which remain to be resolved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth study of the foundations of statistical energy analysis, with a focus on examining the statistical theory of sound and vibration. In the modal approach, an introduction to random vibration with application to complex systems having a large number of modes is provided. For the wave approach, the phenomena of propagation, group speed, and energy transport are extensively discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the emergence of the diffuse field, the central concept of the theory. All important notions are gradually introduced—-making the text self-contained—-to lead the reader to the ultimate result of `coupling power proportionality' and the concept of `vibrational temperature'. Further key topics include the analogy between thermodynamics and sound vibration. Applications are concerned with random vibration in mass—spring resonators, strings, beams, rods, and plates but also reverberation in room acoustics, radiation of sound, and sound response.

Book excerpt: Two of the most acclaimed reference works in the area of acoustics in recent years have been our Encyclopedia of Acoustics, 4 Volume set and the Handbook of Acoustics spin-off. These works, edited by Malcolm Crocker, positioned Wiley as a major player in the acoustics reference market. With our recently published revision of Beranek & Ver's Noise and Vibration Control Engineering, Wiley is a highly respected name in the acoustics business. Crocker's new handbook covers an area of great importance to engineers and designers. Noise and vibration control is one largest areas of application of the acoustics topics covered in the successful encyclopedia and handbook. It is also an area that has been under-published in recent years. Crocker has positioned this reference to cover the gamut of topics while focusing more on the applications to industrial needs. In this way the book will become the best single source of need-to-know information for the professional markets.

Book excerpt: A new mathematical model is proposed to examine the vibration transmission through rolling element bearings in geared rotor systems. Current bearing models, based on either ideal boundary conditions for the shaft or purely translational stiffness element description, cannot explain how the vibratory motion may be transmitted from the rotating shaft to the casing. For example, a vibration model based upon the simple bearing formulations can only predict purely in-plane type motion on the flexible casing plate given only bending motion on the shaft. However, experimental results have shown that the casing plate motion is primarily flexural. This study clarifies this issue qualitatively and quantitatively by developing a comprehensive bearing stiffness matrix is partially verified using available analytical and experimental data, and is completely characterized. This study extends the proposed bearing formulation to analyze the overall geared rotor system dynamics including casting and mounts. The bearing stiffness matrix is included in discrete system models using lumped parameter and/or dynamic finite element techniques. Eigensolution and forced harmonic response due to rotating mass unbalance or kinematic transmissions error excitation for the following examples are computed: (I) single-stage rotor system with flexible shaft supported by two bearings on rigid casing and flexible mounts, (II) spur gear pair system with motor and load inertials attached to two flexible shafts and supported by four bearings on flexibly mounted rigid casing, and (III) case II with flexible casing and rigid mounts. In several of these examples, analytical predictions compare well with measured data, validating the purposed formulation.

Book excerpt: Railway Noise and Vibration: Mechanisms, Modelling, and Means of Control, 2nd Edition provides a complete overview of the state of the art in rail noise and vibration theory and modelling. This book describes each source of noise and vibration, such as rolling noise, curve squeal, bridge noise, aerodynamic noise, ground vibration and ground-borne noise, and vehicle interior noise in a systematic way, covering relevant theoretical modelling approaches and their practical implementation, with extensive examples of noise control technology applied at source. Noise and vibration are key obstacles to further development of railway networks worldwide for high-speed intercity traffic, freight and suburban metros and light-rail systems. With noise problems all too often dealt with inefficiently due to a lack of understanding of the problem, this new edition is an invaluable reference for all those working with noise and vibration from railways, whether in industry, consultancy, or academic research. • Introduces theoretical modelling approaches for each source in a tutorial fashion• Discusses the theoretical basis and practical applications of railway noise control technology, summarising the latest research and key findings from recent decades in one concise resource• Updated with new prediction models and methods, including more detail on ground vibration and aerodynamic noise
