Book excerpt: The Seaformatics project is a five year AIF project that intends to develop wireless marine sensors for use in monitoring seabed processes. The sensor pods will be selfpowered through ocean bottom currents and will be able to communicate with each other This research is focused on development of a device to harvest energy from water currents near the ocean floor to power such seabed marine technologies. The research is very interdisciplinary in nature and involves design, structures, fluid dynamics, nonlinear control and power electronics, which makes it very challenging. A major outcome of the research is a robust small marine current energy conversion system that can extract power from the low marine current. A prototype was designed and constructed. It was tested in the towing tank in the Faculty of Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Power output was controlled using a DSP PI controller. The device consisted of a watertight hull. An electric generator was installed inside the hull and the turbine rotor was installed outside. The rotor of the device has blades like conventional wind turbines but the blades face forward into the flow and not perpendicular to it. This unique arrangement of the blades ensures high starting torque even in low currents. It used simple flat plate blades. A unique magnetic torque coupler was used to connect the generator to the turbine. This used sets of magnets inside and outside that repelled each other. Besides acting as a coupler, this arrangement of magnets also acted as a bearing. Ideally, it would have been good to use a generator designed specifically for the device but that would have been expensive and beyond the project budget so we used a commercial generator. To increase the rotational speed of this generator, a set of gears was inserted between the turbine and generator shafts. Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis and Potential Flow Hydrodynamics Theory were used to study the hydrodynamics of the rotor. This allowed us to explore geometry variations too expensive to study experimentally. For example, it showed that curved blades would give significantly more power than flat blades. This dissertation also presents an adaptive back stepping nonlinear maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control strategy for the system. Because of tow tank scheduling constraints, this was tested in simulation only. The proposed control strategy does not require any flow sensors and also does not need the parameters of a PMSG. A Lyapunov based online estimation approach is used to continually estimate the input voltage and the output load resistance of the converter. Detailed simulation results of the proposed adaptive back stepping control are presented and fully analyzed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed nonlinear controller can incessantly extract maximum power from the ocean current at various flow speeds.

The high load factor resulting from the fluid properties and the predictable resource characteristics make tidal and wave energy resources attractive and advantageous for power generation and advantageous when compared to other renewable energies. The technologies are just beginning to reach technical and economic viability to make them potential commercial power sources in the near future. While only a few small projects currently exist, the technology is advancing rapidly and has huge potential for generating bulk power. Moreover, international treaties related to climate control and dwindling fossil fuel resources have encouraged us to harness energy sustainably from such marine renewable sources. Several demonstrative projects have been scheduled to capture tidal and wave energies. A number of these projects have now reached a relatively mature stage and are close to completion. However, very little is known to the academic world about these technologies beyond the basics of their energy conversion principles. While research emphasis is more towards hydrodynamics and turbine design, very limited activities are witnessed in power conversion interface, control, and power quality aspects. Regarding this emerging and promising area of research, this book aims to present recent results, serving to promote successful marine renewable energies integration to the grid or to standalone microgrids.

As ocean energy converter technology continues to advance, vigorous testing methodology, new design modeling, and assessments of the device performances under different wave conditions become critically important. This work presents the development of a new type of wave energy converter, Smart-WEC, from concept to prototype stage. It utilizes a direct drive linear generator to extract energy from the motion of ocean waves. An integrated dynamic model of Smart-WEC is developed to evaluate its dynamic behavior. Furthermore, Smart-WEC has the capability of making connections with underwater ocean technologies, such as autonomous underwater vehicles and ocean sensors, through a novel underwater wireless power transfer technology. In an effort to assure the energy resilience and maximum power absorption and power transferred, this dissertation addresses the limitations of conventional ocean energy converter technologies to allow a more robust, smart and reliable system. New control methods are explored and implemented: (1) a novel maximum power efficiency tracking (MPET) control that uses k-nearest neighbors to estimate the system's coupling coefficient and tracks the peak efficiency (>85%) through an adaptive converter control; (2) a maximum life cycle tracking control that minimizes the torques stress on tidal shaft and therefore maximizes the energy absorbed by tracking the power-speed curves; and (3) a model predictive control that calculates the power electronic converter voltage needed to force the measured current to its reference value, thereby maximizing power generated by Smart-WEC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses, for the first time, wireless power transfer in the ocean environment. Topics covered include power electronic techniques, advanced control strategies, as well as classic and emerging applications such as smart ocean energy systems and wireless power transfer and charging of underwater autonomous vehicles. Emerging research topics are presented, along with methodologies, approaches, and industrial development of intelligent and energy-efficient techniques. Apart from the basic principles with an emphasis on inductive power transfer and mathematical analysis, the book discusses the emerging implementation for underwater wireless power transfer such as energy encryption, power and data transfer through common links, and secured data- and cyber-security. Specifically, the book comprehensively introduces significant discussions on UWPT coil theoretical and experimental analysis in seawater, optimal design, and intelligent controls. For example, since fast communication is not viable in an underwater environment, the proposed book discusses Maximum Power Efficiency Tracking (MPET) control, which achieves a maximum power efficiency (>85%) without communication or feedback from the transmitting side of the UWPT system. A k-nearest-neighbors-based machine learning approach is used to estimate the coupling coefficiency between the coils. This machine learning-based intelligent control method can offer important guidance for graduate students, academic researchers, and industrial engineers who want to understand the working principles and realize the developing trends in underwater wireless power transfer. Finally, the book includes details on the modeling and design of a smart ocean energy system--a new type of power harvesting system designed to convert ocean energy into electricity, which has the capability of making underwater wireless power connections with distributed marine devices.

Book excerpt: EVALUATION OF OCEAN-ENERGY CONVERSION BASED ON LINEAR GENERATOR CONCEPTS As the world continues to demand greater productivity and lifestyle enrichment through technological advancements, the demand for electrical power is predicted to escalate dramatically. Thus far, this increased demand has been primarily supplied from fossil fueled plants. Unfortunately, the burning of fossil fuels produce harmful carbon dioxide pollution as a by-product. It has been hypothesized that unless a clean, renewable, and efficient alternate source of energy is found soon, the world may either exhaust its supplies of energy-producing materials or drastically degrade its environment. However, motions that occur naturally, such as ocean waves, can play a significant role in generating environmentally safe and economically viable energy for human utilization. The focus of this work predicts the electrical power generation capabilities from a seabed mounted linear generator tethered to a floating buoy heaving under the influence of passing ocean surface waves. Mathematical models are introduced which simulate the oceans' surface conditions under both the regular (basic) and irregular (natural) wave regimes, the heave (vertical displacement) response for a floating buoy, and the resulting electrical output parameters of the linear generator. Within these models, various physical and electrical parameters are altered in an attempt to generate a greater output power for a given sea state condition, making the Wave Energy Converter (WEC) more efficient. It is shown theoretically that the buoy can be designed to have a greater heave response than that of the height of a passing wave resulting in an increase in generated power from the linear generator. Book excerpt: This PhD thesis models the whole power chain of a marine current turbine (MCT) system and investigates the use of energy storage devices to improve power quality and energy management capability. First, various energy storage technologies concerning their applications to address the power fluctuation phenomena in tidal current generation system are reviewed and compared. Then, a two-stage power smoothing control strategy for compensating swell-induced short-time fluctuations is proposed. The proposed control strategy uses a modified MPPT with filter strategy on the generator-side and supercapacitors on the grid-side for injecting a smoothed power to the grid. Afterwards, a flow battery system for daily energy management of a hybrid MCT/battery/diesel system is proposed. The MCT dominant power supply case and an island power supply (with diesel generators as the main source) are investigated. Finally, power limitation controls with a robust flux-weakening strategy for a PMSG-based non-pitchable MCT system are proposed for over-rated marine current speed periods. In this context, the constant power control and maximum power control modes at the flux-weakening stage are compared; and the influence of the generator parameters on the joint operating characteristics of the turbine and generator are also discussed.
