It brings together the necessary disciplines of colloid and surface chemistry, hydrodynamics, experimental methods, and computational methods to present a unified approach to this problem. The book is divided into four parts. Part I presents the theoretical principles governing deposition and aggregation phenomena, including a discussion of the forces that exist between particles and the hydrodynamic factors that control the movement of the particles and suspending fluid. Part II introduces methods for modeling the processes, first at a simple level (e.g. single particle-surface, single particle-single particle interactions in model flow conditions) and then describes the simulation protocols and computation tools which may be employed to describe more complex (multiple-particle interaction) systems. Part III summarizes the experimental methods of quantifying aggregating and depositing systems and concludes with a comparison of experimental results with those predicted using simple theoretical predictions. Part IV is largely based on illustrative examples to demonstrate the application of simulation and modeling methods to particle filtration, aggregation, and transport processes. Here, the effect of collector grains on the behavior of colloidal particles was studied in two different experimental systems, i.e., column studies with stationary collectors and batch mixing to study hetero aggregation. Polystyrene latex beads, 100 nm diameter, and soda lime glass beads, with two different diameters of 212-300 $\mu$m and 710-1180 $\mu$m, were employed as colloidal particles and collector grains, respectively. Column experiments were performed to understand fate of colloidal particles in the porous medium. There are three major phenomena that control colloidal transport in porous media: Deposition, aggregation, and straining. These three distinct types of particle dynamics in porous media were studied by adjusting physicochemical properties of colloidal suspension. Furthermore, the effect of washing the collector beads was studied. Batch experiments, in which known amount of collector grains are added to colloidal suspension with known concentration, are designed to investigate more collector-colloids interaction role in transport dynamics of colloidal particles. UV-Vis spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering techniques are employed to understand both deposition and aggregation of colloidal particles in the vicinity of collector grains. Results obtained by dynamic light scattering revealed that aggregation is the predominant factor in this colloidal system. The possible sources for this type of behavior are also tackled by undertaking controlled experiments. In the batch experiments, ions leaching from the surface of glass beads, effect of mixing, and glass beads presence are confirmed as the three major reasons behind the aggregation of colloidal particles.

Book excerpt: From the separation of products on industrial filters to the propagation of pollutants in soils or the transmission of micro-organisms in biological tissues, the transport of particles through porous matrices is ubiquitous. Particle-matrix interactions involve crucial deposition mechanisms, often studied by numerical simulations, global measurements or reduced (1D or 2D) systems. By making adapted 3D porous media (transparent random packings of spheres), and taking advantage of original internal observations (MRI, confocal microscopy), we have been able to directly visualize and analyze the whole range of transport and deposition dynamics at the global and local scales. Varying in turns the particles size (tens of nanometers to tens of microns), long-range interactions (electrostatic or magnetic) and shape (from unique spheres to clusters), all deposition regimes are finally mapped according to three key parameters: particle confinement (particle/pore size ratio), particle-surface affinity, and inter-particle aggregation ability.Two examples highlight the diversity of these regimes. First, we show that non-colloidal particles of sufficient size tend to clog pores by accumulating in pore size clusters, which ultimately constitute regions avoided by the flow. A critical cluster concentration (percolation) corresponds to a system saturation, i.e. caking. Further insights on the impact of the particle shape on the clogging dynamics are also proposed. On another side, for non-clogging colloidal particles, we show that particle accumulation is a self-limited mechanism, towards a deposited fraction associated with a balance between the colloidal cohesive energy and the local flow (drag energy varying with evolving porosity).In the end, the classification of the main deposition regimes combined with simple predictive models allows an application of these results to a broad range of systems.
