Book excerpt: Biofuels have been promoted by governmental policies for reducing fossil fuel dependency and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as facilitating regional economic growth. Comprehensive model analysis is needed to assess the economic and environmental impacts of developing bioenergy production systems. For cellulosic biofuel production and supply in particular, existing studies have not accounted for the inter-dependencies between multiple participating decision makers and simultaneously incorporated uncertainties and risks associated with the linked production systems. This dissertation presents a methodology that incorporates uncertainty element to the existing integrated modeling framework specifically designed for advanced biofuel production systems using dedicated energy crops as feedstock resources. The goal of the framework is to support the bioenergy industry for infrastructure and supply chain development. The framework is flexible to adapt to different topological network structures and decision scopes based on the modeling requirements, such as on capturing the interactions between the agricultural production system and the multi-refinery bioenergy supply chain system with regards to land allocation and crop adoption patterns, which is critical for estimating feedstock supply potentials for the bioenergy industry. The methodology is also particularly designed to incorporate system uncertainties by using stochastic programming models to improve the resilience of the optimized system design. The framework is used to construct model analyses in two case studies. The results of the California biomass supply model estimate that feedstock pretreatment via combined torrefaction and pelletization reduces delivered and transportation cost for long-distance biomass shipment by 5% and 15% respectively. The Pacific Northwest hardwood biofuels application integrates full-scaled supply chain infrastructure optimization with agricultural economic modeling and estimates that bio-jet fuels can be produced at costs between 4 to 5 dollars per gallon, and identifies areas suitable for simultaneously deploying a set of biorefineries using adopted poplar as the dedicated energy crop to produce biomass feedstocks. This application specifically incorporates system uncertainties in the crop market and provides an optimal system design solution with over 17% improvement in expected total profit compared to its corresponding deterministic model.

The aim was not only to focus on energy production from biomass but also to include chemicals and materials because of several factors such as an emerging cost competitive energy resource such as shale gas, highly volatile energy prices, and customer's preparedness and acceptances. Furthermore, it also could leverage biomass plantations on the producers' sides. The biomass supply chain model has considered annual profitability of producing products as the performance indicator. It was derived from revenues of selling the products subtracted all the associated costs such as biomass cost, transportation cost, production cost, and emission treatment costs from transportation and production activities. It summed up simultaneously all the profitable processing options that have existed in the superstructure to yield the optimal value, while a single ownership was assumed for the whole supply chain's facilities. Three optimization models have been developed and implemented in GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System).

However, these goals can be achieved by sustainable production of bioenergy through robust supply chains, which require (i) reliable and precise assessment of the availability of sustainable biomass/feedstock, (ii) appropriate design to optimize strategic decisions in the supply chain, and (iii) reduce uncertainties in the tactical/operational decisions. This dissertation presented an efficient and robust spatial modeling framework to quantify precisely the availability of sustainable crop residues for a large-scale area, identify potential and optimal sites to locate biorefineries and develop biomass supply curves with the delivered cost of crop residues. Moreover, the watershed model was used to estimate energycrop yield, annual availability of sustainable biomass in the strip-mined lands and impacts of growing energy crops, i.e., Miscanthus on water quality. Various biomass supply logistics and storage options were analyzed to identify the most economical way to deliver feedstock to biorefineries. A GIS integrated discrete-event simulation model was developed to identify optimal locations of a biorefinery and simulate the biomass supply chain to estimate delivered cost of biomass, energy usage, and carbon footprint. The lifecycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic assessment (TEA) approaches were used to quantify carbon footprint and minimum selling price (MSP) of delivering renewable fuel (i.e. BioCNG) produced from co-digestion of animal and food waste and energy crops via aneraobic digestion (AD) technologies. The generilized and integrated bioenergy supply chain model can be used for developing and managing a location-specific sustainable biorefinery.

A factorial modeling experiment with 20 cities as replicates was conducted. 3 feedstock use scenarios were simulated: local, catalytic pyrolytic production of gasoline (181,437 Mg yr-1); regional, biochemical production of bio-jet (725,748 Mg yr-1); and pellet production for international markets (272,155 Mg yr-1). Accordingly, a general mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation is developed to support the design of an integrated biorefinery supply chain. The model aims to attain the optimal supply chain configurations from many possible alternatives depending on (i) a large portfolio of biomass sources with distinct physical and chemical characteristics and with different possible locations for its supply; (ii) diverse storage types, with or without pre-processing technologies, and locations; (iv) different transportation modes for every material flows; (iv) different processing technologies to attain a large portfolio of biobased products as well as capacities and locations and (v) manage a large portfolio of end products to be sent to different markets. The model is supported by a database built in Excel in order to allow the application of the model to specific situations and be applied as a decision support system.
