Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes an attack helicopter module for the Joint Warfare Analysis Experimental Prototype (JWAEP), a joint theater level, low resolution stochastic simulation developed at the Naval Postgraduate School. The modeling formulations, required data, and assumptions which are required to portray attack helicopter operations in theater level simulations are presented. The focus for the attack module is the representation of attack helicopter units in the conduct of deliberate attacks; however, many of the models described can be applied to general helicopter operations. The formulations are limited to the major events that occur during an attack helicopter deliberate attack and represent initial research to portray attack helicopter operations in JWAEP.

Book excerpt: Simulations are widely used in the military for training personnel, analyzing proposed equipment, and rehearsing missions, and these simulations need realistic models of human behavior. This book draws together a wide variety of theoretical and applied research in human behavior modeling that can be considered for use in those simulations. It covers behavior at the individual, unit, and command level. At the individual soldier level, the topics covered include attention, learning, memory, decisionmaking, perception, situation awareness, and planning. At the unit level, the focus is on command and control. The book provides short-, medium-, and long-term goals for research and development of more realistic models of human behavior.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1981, offers a critical review of the techniques of mathematical modelling and their appropriate application to military operations research – the analysis of data (historical data, exercise and test results, and intelligence) in preparation for war. The virtues of sophistication via simplicity, and the beauty of the artful finesse, emerge as the signature of successful modelling.

Book excerpt: This Note provides an overview of the main theater warfare model developed as part of the RAND Strategy Assessment System (RSAS, Release 3.0), in a game-structured simulation of global conflict. This model covers land and air combat in Central Europe and Korea and is part of a global combat model (CAMPAIGN) that provides a fully integrated treatment of conventional, theater-nuclear, and intercontinental-nuclear warfare worldwide. The model has been designed to answer "What if?" questions quickly, to be used either as a closed simulation or as an interactive game, and to be flexible. It permits the user to vary assumptions about a broad range of qualitative and quantitative issues such as national fighting effectiveness, maximum combat intensity, air-ground interactions, etc. The model is also unique in its treatment of maneuver because it allows the attacker and defender to have explicit concepts of maneuver at corps level and above.
