In each case the effect of ice thickness, water depth, and the wave-length and angle of incidence of the incoming ocean wave is considered. In Model 1 the ice is assumed to consist of floating non-interacting mass elements of varying thickness and the shallow-water approximation is utilized to simplify the equations. A simple cosine distribution varying in one direction only is assumed. In Model 11 the mass elements of constant thickness, interact through a bending stiffness force so that the ice acts as a thin elastic plate. The mass elements are connected through a surface tension force in Model 111 so that the ice is simulated by a stretched membrane. In both Models 11 and 111 the full linearized equations are solved. Because of the complexity of the resulting analysis, calculations of the reflection and transmission coefficients, and the pressure under the ice, are made in Model 11 on the basis of the shallow water approximation. Book excerpt: The Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) is a highly dynamic region between the open ocean and the inner ice pack. The ice over this region is subjected to waves, introducing new forces but also changing the ice from a cohesive material to a mobile collection of floes. Until recently, the challenges posed by in-situ ice measurements in the MIZ prevented a detailed characterization of changes in the ice cover. The rapidly changing conditions over short distances have also prevented detailed numerical simulations. Recent developments in observational and computational capabilities allow further investigations of the physical processes for ice formation and wave-ice interactions in the MIZ. Many features of the MIZ remain to be explained and quantified, particularly rapid ice movement near the ice edge and ice thickening under wave pressure. In order to investigate these and support future field and numerical studies, a model of the MIZ is developed with a new numerical method better suited for high resolution. Simulations of waves causing ice compaction and the ice edge jet are then performed to detail the expected impacts of waves on sea ice. The potential of numerical improvements in sea ice models to obtain greater efficiency and accuracy at high resolutions is successfully demonstrated. The addition of the wave radiative stress allows the generation of realistic thickness profiles, provided that the sea ice strength is modified to represent the difference between pack ice and thinner ice. With the same modifications, obliquely incident waves on the ice edge produced an ice edge jet with a range of characteristics depending on wave parameters and modeled interactions. The magnitude of wave attenuation in sea ice and the ice strength are found to be very important factors in the simulations. Consideration of wave effects on ice thickness and drift speed are also shown to have potential to increase both open water and ice formation.

A term to represent the effect of floating sea ice is known for sparse collections of floes, but this is not valid at high concentrations. As a result, we derive the transport equation for a continuous ice cover of random thickness as a first step towards a transport equation model for high ice concentration. The attenuation coefficients predicted by this new equation turn out to be unrealistic. Hence, we outline an alternative derivation that may be explored in future work.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the effects of important physical processes of the wave-current-ice interactions on the surface waves and three-dimensional (3D) circulations in the northwest Atlantic (NWA). A one-way coupled wave-circulation-ice model for the NWA is developed to evaluate four different packages for the wind input and wave dissipation. The model is also used to investigate wave propagations in ice. To improve the performance of the commonly-used drag coefficient, a new parameterization of the drag coefficient is proposed based on observations. A new parameterization for depth-induced wave breaking over shallow waters is also proposed, in which the breaker index has a nonlinear dependence on the bottom slope. These new parameterizations are used in a two-way coupled wave-circulation model for the study of WCIs during Hurricanes Earl and Igor in 2010. The inclusion of WCIs in the coupled model significantly improves the model performance.

Although this increasing trend is modest, it is surprising given the overall warming of the global climate and the region. Indeed, climate models, which incorporate our best understanding of the processes affecting the region, generally simulate a decrease in sea ice. Moreover, sea ice in the Arctic has exhibited pronounced declines over the same period, consistent with global climate model simulations. For these reasons, the behavior of Antarctic sea ice has presented a conundrum for global climate change science. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop in January 2016, to bring together scientists with different sets of expertise and perspectives to further explore potential mechanisms driving the evolution of recent Antarctic sea ice variability and to discuss ways to advance understanding of Antarctic sea ice and its relationship to the broader ocean-climate system. In particular, it is recognized that applied mechanical force can plausibly alter chemical reactions inside materials or at material interfaces, though the fundamental reasons for this chemomechanical coupling are studied in a material-speci c manner. Atomistic-level s- ulations can provide insight into the unit processes that facilitate kinetic reactions within complex materials, but the typical nanosecond timescales of such simulations are in contrast to the second-scale to hour-scale timescales of experimentally accessible or technologically relevant timescales. Further, in complex materials these key unit processes are “rare events” due to the high energy barriers associated with those processes. Examples of such rare events include unbinding between two proteins that tether biological cells to extracellular materials [1], unfolding of complex polymers, stiffness and bond breaking in amorphous glass bers and gels [2], and diffusive hops of point defects within crystalline alloys [3].
