Book excerpt: An experimental study was made to obtain quantitative information on heat transfer, flow, and pressure distribution in a branched duct test section that had several significant features of an internal cooling passage of a turbine blade. The objective of this study was to generate a set of experimental data that could be used for validation of computer codes that would be used to model internal cooling. Surface heat transfer coefficients and entrance flow conditions were measured at nominal entrance Reynolds numbers of 45 000, 335 000, and 726 000. Heat transfer data were obtained by using a steady-state technique in which an Inconel heater sheet is attached to the surface and coated with liquid crystals. Visual and quantitative flow-field data from particle image velocimetry measurements for a plane at midchannel height for a Reynolds number of 45 000 were also obtained. The flow was seeded with polystyrene particles and illuminated by a laser light sheet. Pressure distribution measurements were made both on the surface with discrete holes and in the flow field with a total pressure probe. The flow-field measurements yielded flow-field velocities at selected locations. A relatively new method, pressure sensitive paint, was also used to measure surface pressure distribution. The pressure paint data obtained at Reynolds numbers of 335 000 and 726 000 compared well with the more standard method of measuring pressures by using discrete holes.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive reference for engineers and researchers, Gas Turbine Heat Transfer and Cooling Technology, Second Edition has been completely revised and updated to reflect advances in the field made during the past ten years. The second edition retains the format that made the first edition so popular and adds new information mainly based on selected published papers in the open literature. See What’s New in the Second Edition: State-of-the-art cooling technologies such as advanced turbine blade film cooling and internal cooling Modern experimental methods for gas turbine heat transfer and cooling research Advanced computational models for gas turbine heat transfer and cooling performance predictions Suggestions for future research in this critical technology The book discusses the need for turbine cooling, gas turbine heat-transfer problems, and cooling methodology and covers turbine rotor and stator heat-transfer issues, including endwall and blade tip regions under engine conditions, as well as under simulated engine conditions. It then examines turbine rotor and stator blade film cooling and discusses the unsteady high free-stream turbulence effect on simulated cascade airfoils. From here, the book explores impingement cooling, rib-turbulent cooling, pin-fin cooling, and compound and new cooling techniques. It also highlights the effect of rotation on rotor coolant passage heat transfer. Coverage of experimental methods includes heat-transfer and mass-transfer techniques, liquid crystal thermography, optical techniques, as well as flow and thermal measurement techniques. The book concludes with discussions of governing equations and turbulence models and their applications for predicting turbine blade heat transfer and film cooling, and turbine blade internal cooling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed heat transfer measurements and predictions are given for a power generation turbine rotor with 129 deg of nominal turning and an axial chord of 137 mm. Data were obtained for a set of four exit Reynolds numbers comprised of the design point of 628,000, -20%, +20%, and +40%. Three ideal exit pressure ratios were examined including the design point of 1.378, -10%, and +10%. Inlet incidence angles of 0 deg and +/-2 deg were also examined. Measurements were made in a linear cascade with highly three-dimensional blade passage flows that resulted from the high flow turning and thick inlet boundary layers. Inlet turbulence was generated with a blown square bar grid. The purpose of the work is the extension of three-dimensional predictive modeling capability for airfoil external heat transfer to engine specific conditions including blade shape, Reynolds numbers, and Mach numbers. Data were obtained by a steady-state technique using a thin-foil heater wrapped around a low thermal conductivity blade. Surface temperatures were measured using calibrated liquid crystals. The results show the effects of strong secondary vortical flows, laminar-to-turbulent transition, and also show good detail in the stagnation region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat transfer measurements made on the rotor blade of a full stage model turbine operating at engine representative conditions are presented. The measurement technique of mounting thin film heat transfer gauges on enamel coated turbine blades enables the heat transfer rate to be measured across a frequency range of d.c. to 100kHz. The output is amplified using electronic circuits housed inside the shaft before transmission through a slipring and digital signal processing routines are used to calculate the heat transfer rate. A calibration experiment in which the gauge is pulsed with a laser beam is described in detail. The results are compared with data from a previous two-dimensional simulation of wake-passing flow on the mid-height section of the same blade. The mean heat transfer rate recorded in the two experiments shows reasonable agreement. Fluctuations in the unsteady heat transfer signal at NGV passing frequency are seen at the same locations in data from both experiments, however the magnitude of the fluctuations seen on the rotor are much smaller than those recorded in the two-dimensional simulation. Frequency spectra and correlation analysis of heat transfer traces recorded on the rotor are also presented.

Book excerpt: This experimental study contains two points; part 1 - turbine blade heat transfer under low Reynolds number flow conditions, and part 2 - trailing edge cooling and heat transfer. The effect of unsteady wake and free stream turbulence on heat transfer and pressure coefficients of a turbine blade was investigated in low Reynolds number flows. The experiments were performed on a five blade linear cascade in a low speed wind tunnel. A spoked wheel type wake generator and two different turbulence grids were employed to generate different levels of the Strouhal number and turbulence intensity, respectively. The cascade inlet Reynolds number based on blade chord length was varied from 15,700 to 105,000, and the Strouhal number was varied from 0 to 2.96 by changing the rotating wake passing frequency (rod speed) and cascade inlet velocity. A thin foil thermocouple instrumented blade was used to determine the surface heat transfer coefficient. A Liquid crystal technique based on hue value detection was used to measure the heat transfer coefficient on a trailing edge film cooling model and internal model of a gas turbine blade. It was also used to determine the film effectiveness on the trailing edge. For the internal model, Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter of the exit slot and exit velocity were 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, and 30,000 and corresponding coolant-to-mainstream velocity ratios were 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, and 1.8 for the external models, respectively. The experiments were performed at two different designs and each design has several different models such as staggered / inline exit, straight / tapered entrance, and smooth / rib entrance. The compressed air was used in coolant air. A circular turbulence grid was employed to upstream in the wind tunnel and square ribs were employed in the inlet chamber to generate turbulence intensity externally and internally, respectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present treatise reports on theoretical investigations and test-stand measurements which were carried out in the BMW Flugmotoren GMbH in developing the hollow blade for exhaust gas turbines. As an introduction the temperature variation and the stress on a turbine blade for a gas temperature of 900 degrees and circumferential velocities of 600 meters per second are discussed. The assumptions onthe heat transfer coefficients at the blade profile are supported by tests on an electrically heated blade model. The temperature distribution in the cross section of a blade Is thoroughly investigated and the temperature field determined for a special case. A method for calculation of the thermal stresses in turbine blades for a given temperature distribution is indicated. The effect of the heat radiation on the blade temperature also is dealt with. Test-stand experiments on turbine blades are evaluated, particularly with respect to temperature distribution in the cross section; maximum and minimum temperature in the cross section are ascertained. Finally, the application of the hollow blade for a stationary gas turbine is investigated. Starting from a setup for 550 C gas temperature the improvement of the thermal efficiency and the fuel consumption are considered as well as the increase of the useful power by use of high temperatures. The power required for blade cooling is taken into account.
