Book excerpt: Directed Energy Weapons is nothing new to mankind, historically the origination of such weapons falls in centuries ago when first time the famous Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer Archimedes of Syracuse used different mirrors to collect sunbeams and focusing them on Romans fleet in order to destroy enemy ships with fire. This is known as the Archimedes Heat Ray. Archimedes may have used mirrors acting collectively as a parabolic reflector to burn ships attacking Syracuse. The device was used to focus sunlight onto approaching ships, causing them to catch fire. Of course the myth or reality of Archimedes Heat Ray still is a questionable story, but certain experiments with the help of a group of students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology was carried out with 127 one-foot (30 cm) square mirror tiles in October of 2005 that was focused on a mock-up wooden ship at a range of around 100 feet (30 m). The flames broke out on a patch of the ship, but only after the sky had been cloudless and the ship had remained stationary for around ten minutes. It was concluded the device was a feasible weapon under these conditions.

Book excerpt: This dissertation makes contributions towards knowledge of optimizing of laser weapon performance when operating in the air-to-ground (ATG) regime in thermal blooming conditions. Wave optics modeling techniques were used to represent laser weapon performance in a high fidelity sense to allow progress to be made toward improving lower-fidelity scaling laws that can be used in systems level analysis which has need for better representations of thermal blooming. Chemical-oxygen iodine laser (COIL) based weapon systems that operate near the ground will experience thermal blooming due to atmospheric absorption if output power is sufficiently high. The thermal lens in the ATG case is predominantly in the far-field of the optical system which puts the problem outside the envelope for most classical phase correction techniques. Focusing the laser beyond the target (defocus) in the air-to-ground regime is shown to improve irradiance at the target and can be thought of as reducing the thermal blooming distortion number, ND, rather than phase correction. Improvement is shown in a baseline scenario presented and all variations from it explored herein. The Breaux ND is examined for potential use in a defocus scaling law, and a correction factor due to Smith (1977), developed for a different context, is proposed to address deficiencies. Optimal defocus settings and expected improvement are presented as a function of Breaux ND. Also, the generally negative interaction between turbulence and thermal blooming is investigated and shown to further limit performance potential of ATG laser weapons. This negative interaction can impact the weapon design trade space and operational methods for minimizing the interaction and thermal blooming are explored in a case study.

Book excerpt: This book delves deeply into the real-world technologies behind the ‘directed energy weapons’ that many believe exist only within the confines of science fiction. On the contrary, directed energy weapons such as high energy lasers are very real, and this book provides a crash course in all the physical and mathematical concepts that make these weapons a reality. Written to serve both scientists researching the physical phenomena of laser effects, as well as engineers focusing on practical applications, the author provides worked examples demonstrating issues such as how to solve for heat diffusion equation for different boundary and initial conditions. Several sections are devoted to reviewing and dealing with solutions of diffusion equations utilizing the aid of the integral transform techniques. Ultimately this book examines the state-of-the-art in currently available high energy laser technologies, and suggests future directions for accelerating practical applications in the field.“br>/div

Book excerpt: Under this MRI funded by HEL JTO and AFOSR, UCLA, in collaboration with Michigan Tech, Georgia Tech, MZA Associates Corporation, Tempest Technologies, Trex Enterprises Corporation, ATK Mission Research and the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), has established a comprehensive research program in high-performance control of high energy lasers (HEL), modeling and simulation of HEL, wavefront sensing, and target tracking. Under this program, researchers have developed adaptive filtering and control methods for wavefront prediction and correction and precise pointing of laser beams to compensate for the effects of atmospheric turbulence, platform vibration, target motion and sensor noise, all of which degrade the performance of laser weapons and communication systems. The research team for this multidisciplinary research initiative has made a comprehensive, integrated attack on the broad range of modeling and simulation, beam control, and target tracking problems that must be solved to achieve the potential of high energy laser systems. This report discusses the main results of the research.

Book excerpt: Recent developments, primarily in solid state lasers and compact power supplies, make the application of an electrically powered high energy laser (HEL) as a tactical weapon feasible in the near term. Cost/performance design tradeoffs are needed to maximize the benefit of such a weapon. The Atmospheric Compensation Simulation code emulates the entire HEL system and allows designers to evaluate and optimize performance prior to hardware commitment. Simulation results indicate that the inclusion of an adaptive optics subsystem, to compensate for atmospheric effects, on a tactical HEL weapon system significantly improves system performance thereby decreasing required power or increasing lethal range or target set.

Book excerpt: High energy lasers have the potential to revolutionize naval warfighting by providing a weapons platform that has greater precision and speed than anything currently available. These lasers can be mounted on ships for surface warfare or mounted on satellites for strikes anywhere around the world. Crucial to the development of these lasers is an understanding of how different atmospheric conditions affect the laser's propagation and the shape of the beam when it finally illuminates the target. Dr. Bill Colson from the Naval Postgraduate School Physics Department developed a computer model for simulating these beams; however, his program can only output two dimensional slices of the three dimensional laser. Theoretically, the beams should be forming "noodles" of energy that break off from the main beam, but that can be difficult to see from Colson's original output. This project aims to modify Colson's program so that it can create three dimensional models of the laser beams, and show the progression of the beams over time.

Book excerpt: The United States Army is looking for ways to defend against missile and mortar attacks. In this book, the National Research Council assesses a plan to create a 100 kW mobile, solid-state, laser weapon that could defend an area several kilometers in diameter. The NRC provides several recommendations: A 100 kW Laser is of limited value, so the program's goal should be a 400 kW weapon. The Army should proceed with the program in stages, focusing first on a rugged transportable platform for the weapon using existing 25 kW laser technology, then directing resources toward 100kW and 400 kW weapons. The Army should perform a detailed, quantitative study of the effectiveness of a high energy, solid-state laser weapon against future threats. The Army should continue to participate in U.S.-based and international research on high-energy lasers and related equipment. The committee found substantial benefits for the Army's solid-state laser program from other programs outside the Army. The Army should conduct risk-assessments that investigate the effects that a high energy laser may have on other airborne platforms in the vicinity of the target. The Army should study eye safety for both the operators of the laser and for civilians. The results of these studies should be integrated into the development of the weapon.

After many decades of research and development, directed-energy weapons such as lasers are still in the experimental stage as of January 2020. It is unknown whether or not these weapons will ever be deployed as operational, high-performance military weapons, and if so, when this will occur. If there is fog, smoke, dust, precipitation, snow, smog, foam, or purposefully scattered obscurant compounds in the atmosphere, atmospheric thermal blooming will be much more severe than it already is. This issue is still mostly unresolved. A laser, at its core, is a light-emitting diode that, in order to function properly and avoid producing unwanted thermal blooming, must emit a beam of light into the atmosphere or into a vacuum. Book excerpt: Fielding High Energy Laser (HEL) weapon systems presents technological challenges as well as employment and financial challenges. The risk associated with the challenges mandates the development process include computer simulation models capable of predicting weapon system performance from the engineering level to assessing the military worth of employing HEL systems in combat scenarios. This research effort focuses on developing laser performance data at a higher fidelity engagement model and integrating the performance data into a mission level model. The propagation of the laser from the transmitting aperture to the target is modeled at the engagement level through the employment of the High Energy Laser End-to-End Operational Simulation (HELEEOS), developed by the AFIT Center for Directed Energy (CDE). The output from HELEEOS directly transfers into data lookup tables for the Extended Air Defense Simulation Model (EADSIM). The EADSIM simulations asses the combat performance of a proposed new HEL weapon, the Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL), in a well-defined mission level scenario based on HEL Joint Technology Office (JTO) requirements for future HEL systems. EADSIM is a mission level simulation model included in the Air Force Analytical Tool Kit. Specifically the research explores the development of the necessary information requirements for HELEEOS and EADSIM to accurately model ATL effects and evaluates challenges related to modeling HEL engagements in EADSIM. Results include discussion on EADSIM HEL weapons modeling capabilities, recommendations on general mission level characteristics that should be modeled, and appropriate measures of performance for campaign-level modeling.
