Este tipo de cursos son ofrecidos por los departamentos de ingenieria industrial y de sistemas, la mayora de las escuelas de negocios y muchos departamentos de ciencias de la computacion; aunque tambien se pueden encontrar cursos de simulacion en otros departamentos de ingeniera (mecanica, civil, electrica), de matematicas, estadstica, epidemiologa y agricultura. Este texto, o algunos de sus captulos, puede servir de apoyo para el dictado de un modulo de simulacion de algunas semanas, dentro de alguna materia de un programa de estudios (e.g., MBA) que no contiene un curso de simulacion. El libro ha sido escrito bajo el estilo de un tutorial accesible, centrado alrededor de ejemplos espec cos, mas que de conceptos generales, y cubre una gran variedad de aplicaciones. Nuestra experiencia nos ha demostrado que estas caractersticas hacen que el texto sea facil de leer y de entender, as como apropiado para estudiantes de diferentes carreras. Un primer curso de simulacion puede cubrir a profundidad del captulo 1 al captulo 8. Probablemente, los captulos 9 y 10 sean particularmente apropiados para estudiantes avanzados de una licenciatura o para estudiantes graduados. Para un segundo curso de simulacion, puede ser apropiado no tocar, o revisar rapidamente la Parte I (captulos 1{4), cubrir a fondo la Parte II (captulos 5{10) y usar la Parte III como temas de refuerzo. Las funciones introducidas en el captulo 10 pueden servir para generar proyectos con estudiantes graduados que tienen alguna experiencia en programacion, ya que pueden ligarse facilmente a otros temas de investigacion. Para un modulo que forma parte de un curso mas amplio, sera recomendable enfocarse en los captulos 1, 5 y 6, quiza una ligera revision de los captulos 7 y 8, y algo de los captulos 2-4, si el tiempo lo permite. Industrial practitioners have seen the growth of simulation as a methodology for tacking problems in which variability is the common denominator. Practically all industrial systems, from manufacturing to aviation are considered stochastic systems. Different modelling techniques have been developed as well as mathematical techniques for formalizing the cause-effect relationships in industrial and complex systems. The methodology in this book illustrates how complexity in modelling can be tackled by the use of coloured petri nets, while at the same time the variability present in systems is integrated in a robust fashion. The book can be used as a concise guide for developing robust models, which are able to efficiently simulate the cause-effect relationships present in complex industrial systems without losing the simulation power of discrete-event simulation. In addition SIMIO’s capabilities allows integration of features that are becoming more and more important for the success of projects such as animation, virtual reality, and geographical information systems (GIS).
