Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ice action on two cylindrical and conical structures, located side by side, was investigated in a small-scale experimental study to determine the interference on the ice forces generated during ice-structure interaction. The proximity of the two structures changes the mode of ice failure, the magnitude and direction of ice forces on the individual structure, and the dominant frequency of ice force variations. Interference effects were determined by comparing the experimental results of tests at different structure spacings.

Book excerpt: IUTAM-IAHR Symposium on Ice-Structure Interaction Professor Bez Tabarrok, Chairman of the Canadian National Committee (CNC) of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) invited Professor Derek Muggeridge to organize a symposium on ice structure interaction. Dr. Muggeridge readily agreed and prepared a proposal that was endorsed by the CNC and presented to the General Assembly Meeting of IUTAM for their consideration. This Assembly gave its approval and provided the local organizing committee with the names of individuals who were willing to serve on the Scientific Committee. Dr. Muggeridge became chairman of this committee and Dr. Ian Jordaan became co-chairman of this committee as well as chairman of the local organizing committee. The symposium followed the very successful previous meeting, chaired by Professor P. Tryde in Copenhagen, by ten years. Both symposia uti lized Springer-Verlag to publish their proceedings. The Faculty of En gineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland were particul{lXly pleased to host this prestigious symposium as it marked the twentieth anniversary of its Ocean Engineering Research Centre.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A test system was developed and used to investigate ice/structure interaction with centrifugal modeling. The test system was designed to perform two main functions: (1) create a uniform ice sheet, and (2) drive a model structure through the ice sheet at a constant speed. Both of these functions were required to be carried out while on board a centrifuge. The ice sheets were created by applying vaporized liquid nitrogen to the water surface in a model test container. Freezing test results were used to establish a linear relationship between ice thickness and the square-root of the product of time and temperature. The relationship was used to create ice sheets of predetermined thickness. An electric motor mounted in the model test container was able to withstand the large inertial stresses associated with accelerations up to 100 gravities. The motor drove the model structure through the ice sheet at a constant velocity. Two small scale model test programs were conducted to determine ice forces on offshore structures and the usefulness of the centrifugal modeling technique to investigate ice/structure interaction problems. The first program was designed to investigate ice crushing forces against isolated vertical cylindrical piles. The model pile test results show good agreement with the results of other research programs. The second test program was designed to investigate ice bending forces against frictionless rigid conical structures. The test results indicate that centrifugal modeling may provide a means for scaling ice density for small scale model tests. Further, a comparison of the test results with the results of a theoretical analysis using plasticity theory shows good agreement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A test system and procedures were developed to investigate ice forces on offshore structures with the technique of centrifugal modeling. The development progressed through four design stages associated with (1) the model container strong box, (2) the ice sheet formation system, (3) the model structure drive system, and (4) the instrumentation. The components were developed separately before incorporation into the final system. The test apparatus developed included an aluminum strong box with a motor driven model structure. The ice sheets were formed by prolonged application of vaporized liquid nitrogen. Temperatures, loads, and displacements were measured with thermistors, strain gages, and a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT), respectively. The test results indicate a relationship between ice thickness, temperature, and time may be used to create an ice sheet of predetermined thickness on the centrifuge. The test results from ice lateral load pile tests conducted with the system developed compare favorably with the results obtained by other investigators.

It addresses the various environmental loads encountered by these structures, and provides detailed descriptions of the fundamentals of structural dynamics in a classroom style, helping readers estimate damping in offshore structures and grasp these aspects’ applications in preliminary analysis and design. Basic concepts of structural dynamics are emphasized through simple illustrative examples and exercises. Design methodologies and guidelines, which are FORM based concepts, are explained through a selection of applied sample structures. Each chapter also features tutorials and exercises for self-learning. A dedicated chapter on stochastic dynamics helps students to extend the basic concepts of structural dynamics to this advanced domain of research. Hydrodynamic response of offshore structures with perforated members is one of the most recent research applications, and has proven to be one of the most effective means of retrofitting offshore structures. In addition, the book integrates the concepts of structural dynamics with the FORM-evolved design of offshore structures, offering a unique approach. This new edition is divided into seven chapters, each of which has been updated. Each chapter also includes a section on frequently asked Questions and Answers (Q&A), which enhances understanding of this complex subject through easy and self-explanatory text. Furthermore, the book presents valuable content with respect to new and recent research carried out by the author in structural dynamics. All numeric examples have been re-checked with more additional explanations. New exercises have been added to improve understanding of the subject matter. Computer coding is also included (wherever possible) to aid computer-based learning of the contents of the book. The book can serve as a textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate courses in civil, structural, applied mechanics, mechanical, aerospace, naval architecture and ocean engineering programs. The book can also serve as a text for professional learning and development programs or as a guide for practicing and consulting offshore structural engineers. The contents of this book will be useful to graduate students, researchers, and professionals alike.
