Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 15 national championships and a tradition of national achievement that dates back to the 1920s, the University of Alabama has secured its spot as one of the most successful athletic institutions in the history of American sports. Dating back to the days when university president Dr. George H. “Mike” Denny decided football would be the university’s ticket to national prominence, Alabama has produced some of the most legendary teams and players in the history of the game. Many of those legends have long since passed, but standouts such as Johnny Mack Brown, Dixie Howell, Don Huston, Pat Trammell, and Derrick Thomas remain alive and well in the hearts and minds of loyal Crimson Tide fans. The legends of Tide stars such as Joe Namath, Ken Stabler, Harry Gilmer, Johnny Musso, John Hannah, and Ozzie Newsome continue to grow with time. None of those legends stands taller than Paul “Bear” Bryant, the former Crimson Tide player who returned to Alabama as head coach in 1958 and built a dynasty that rivaled any in sports, pro, or college football. From Wallace Wade to Heisman Trophy–winner Mark Ingram, current coach Nick Saban, and all points in between, Legends of Alabama Football chronicles the coaches, players, and events that placed Crimson Tide football on the national sports landscape.

The White Thang is a Sasquatch-like creature that has terrorized Alabamians for generations. For a brief period in the 1980s, Needham gained national attention because of its "crying pecan tree." In 1854, a farmer named Orion Williamson simply vanished in a field in Selma. From the aquatic beast known as the Coosa River Monster to the story of the Leprechaun of Mobile, these stories have evolved over generations. Author Alan Brown presents some of the strangest stories from this collective tradition.

Book excerpt: It was an unlikely place for a city, scourged by disease-ridden mosquitos and pummeled by hurricanes. But for more than three hundred years, Mobile has thrived on the unlikely and endured the unimaginable. Mobilians love their gumbo but are likely unaware that it was first served up here by women sent from France to foster population growth. Times were once so dire for free blacks that a shocking number petitioned the courts to become slaves. The city witnessed the first operational submarine, the first Mardi Gras celebration and the last major battle of the Civil War. Author Joe Cuhaj navigates the backwaters of Mobile's fascinating history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the earliest days of universities, students have told stories about their daily lives, often emphasizing extraordinary, surprising, and baffling events. This book examines the fascinating world of college and university legends. While it primarily looks at legends, it also gives some attention to rumors, pranks, rituals, and other forms of folklore. Included are introductory chapters on types of campus folklore, a collection of some 50 legends from a broad range of colleges and universities, an overview of scholarship, and a discussion of campus legends in movies, television, and popular culture. Since the earliest days of universities, students have told stories about their daily lives, often emphasizing extraordinary, surprising, and baffling events. Legends often dramatize certain hopes and fears, showing how stressful and exciting the college experience can be. From the stereotype of the absent minded professor to the adventures of spring break to the mysterious world of fraternities and sororities, campus legends have also become an important part of popular culture. This book provides a convenient, readable introduction to campus legends. While the volume focuses primarily on legends, it also explores rumors, pranks, rituals, and other related folklore types. The book begins with an overview of college and university folklore. This is followed by a discussion of particular types of legends and other folklore genres. The handbook then presents some 50 examples of college and university legends, including ghost stories, urban legends, food lore, drinking tales, murders and suicides, and many others. These examples are accompanied by brief comments. The book next surveys scholarship on campus folklore and discusses the place of college and university legends in films, television, literature, and popular culture. The volume cites numerous print and electronic resources.

Book excerpt: The enthusiasm that I have for sports has led me to bring forth a work, encompassing many sports in which African Americans were not always privy to participate. In the effort to overcome this inequality, many challenges and struggles were experienced, because of the deprivation, and have been addressed within these pages. Much has been achieved as a result of the endurance of these many African American, legendary athletes. It is very disturbing to know what we, as African Americans, went through to arrive at where we are, and now appear to be losing ground. Staying abreast of the various sports has alerted me to the declination in numbers and deterioration of African Americans in the sports arena. This declination is a documented fact and must be expressed in bold terms. My primary purpose in writing this book, "Ebony Legends in Sports", is that it will certainly be a wake-up-call, for action, in the total African American community. My hope is that it will inspire the youth of this, and future generations, to return to the glory of the games, that they will become members of athletic programs, in mass, in their schools, follow through with their endeavors and persevere, as our legends did.

There is so much rich history in the south. But if you look just under the surface, you can see the dark that begins to emerge with unsettling stories about urban legends. The rich history is true, but what about the urban legends, are they true or not? You be the judge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a train ride from Canton, Ohio to Mobile, Alabama, bookworm insurance salesman STEPHEN SMITH enters a world he believes to be fiction when he purchases a collection of local tales and folklore called Mobile Legends from eccentric bookstore owner/author CARTER HIGGINS. However, each story in the collection brings him closer to his own demise. This frame narrative includes ten stories from the Higgins' book. "Bleed Through" is about a cell phone tower that transmits the voices of the dead. In "Obituary" a man receives an early edition of the local paper which includes his own obituary. "Smoking Costs a Fortune" is about a man who visits a medium named Madam Persephone. Two brothers remember their deceased father in the story "Campfire." Pollution causes calamity in "Toxic Highway." In "Massacre Island" a supernatural bonfire blazes on modern day Dauphin Island, Alabama, once called Massacre Island. In "Initiation" a would-be gang member has to rob a grave to be inducted. "Playground" tells the story of a young woman saved by the ghost of a small child. In "This Tavern" one of Mobile's oldest bars is revealed to be haunted by the ghost of a sadistic friar from the seventeenth century. "The Book Lover" is the story that ends the collection and wraps up the tale of Stephen Smith. A Walter Mittyesque character who has a tendency to slip into his daydreams, Stephen leads a mundane existence that pales in comparison to his favorite stories and films. If only he could investigate insurance fraud like Edward G. Robinson in Double Indemnity or actually encounter a ghost or some other supernatural phenomena like the ones he's read and seen movies about his whole life. While in the Deep South, he plans on taking the short trip west from Mobile to New Orleans where he can go on one of the city's famous ghost tours and visit the grave of the Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau, but before that happens, he meets the alluring RENEE GLAPION. Like a femme fatale from one of Stephen's favorite films, Renee casts her spell. After meeting Renee, Stephen changes his mind about leaving the charming city of Mobile where they both are attending an insurance seminar.
