Book Synopsis Living with Floods in a Mobile Southeast Asia by : Carl Middleton
Download or read book Living with Floods in a Mobile Southeast Asia written by Carl Middleton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between migration, vulnerability, resilience and social justice associated with flooding across diverse environmental, social and policy contexts in Southeast Asia. It challenges simple analyses of flooding as a singular driver of migration, and instead considers the ways in which floods figure in migration-based livelihoods and amongst already mobile populations. The book develops a conceptual framework based on a ‘mobile political ecology’ in which particular attention is paid to the multidimensionality, temporalities and geographies of vulnerability. Rather than simply emphasising the capacities (or lack thereof) of individuals and households, the focus is on identifying factors that instigate, manage and perpetuate vulnerable populations and places: these include the sociopolitical dynamics of floods, flood hazards and risky environments, migration and migrant-based livelihoods and the policy environments through which all of these take shape. The book is organised around a series of eight empirical urban and rural case studies from countries in Southeast Asia, where lives are marked by mobility and by floods associated with the region’s monsoonal climate. The concluding chapter synthesises the insights of the case studies, and suggests future policy directions. Together, the chapters highlight critical policy questions around the governance of migration, institutionalised disaster response strategies and broader development agendas.

Book Synopsis The Archaeology of Southeastern Native American Landscapes of the Colonial Era by : Charles R. Cobb
Download or read book The Archaeology of Southeastern Native American Landscapes of the Colonial Era written by Charles R. Cobb and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable Mention, Southern Anthropological Society James Mooney Award Native American populations both accommodated and resisted the encroachment of European powers in southeastern North America from the arrival of Spaniards in the sixteenth century to the first decades of the American republic. Tracing changes to the region’s natural, cultural, social, and political environments, Charles Cobb provides an unprecedented survey of the landscape histories of Indigenous groups across this critically important area and time period. Cobb explores how Native Americans responded to the hardships of epidemic diseases, chronic warfare, and enslavement. Some groups developed new modes of migration and travel to escape conflict while others built new alliances to create safety in numbers. Cultural maps were redrawn as Native communities evolved into the groups known today as the Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Chickasaw, Catawba, and Seminole peoples. Cobb connects the formation of these coalitions to events in the wider Atlantic World, including the rise of plantation slavery, the growth of the deerskin trade, the birth of the consumer revolution, and the emergence of capitalism. Using archaeological data, historical documents, and ethnohistorical accounts, Cobb argues that Native inhabitants of the Southeast successfully navigated the challenges of this era, reevaluating long-standing assumptions that their cultures collapsed under the impact of colonialism. A volume in the series the American Experience in Archaeological Perspective, edited by Michael S. Nassaney
Book Synopsis Migration In, From, and to Southeastern Europe: Ways and strategies of migrating by : Klaus Roth
Download or read book Migration In, From, and to Southeastern Europe: Ways and strategies of migrating written by Klaus Roth and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part two of a selection of articles on migration movements in, to, and from Southeast Europe. It aims at a better understanding of the complex migration processes which deeply affect Balkan societies, both presently and in the past. The articles presented here focus on the ways and strategies of migrants, on "irregular migration" in and to, as well as on "transit migration" through the region, while others deal with the effects of return migration on Balkan societies. They present empirical findings on migration which are of interest not only for experts on Southeast Europe and on migration processes in general, but also for those interested in European integration and in the consequences of EU migration policies.
