Book excerpt: Marek's disease is a form of cancer of poultry caused by an important herpesvirus (MDV). It continues to be a threat to poultry health and welfare and worldwide losses are estimated to be US$ 1 billion annually. Marek's Disease provides a timely review of the problems of Marek's disease with descriptions of the complex viral life cycle, how MDV targets different types of white blood cells, and details of the virus structure, its genes and proteins. - The multiplicity of factors contributing to susceptibility is explored in detail - Vaccination - the problems arising from current vaccination strategies and how these can be improved and made sustainable in future - The lessons learned in the control of MD over the past 30 years, and how we can use MD as a model for other animal and human diseases is discussed

Book Synopsis The Alzheimer's Disease Challenge, Volume II by : Mohammad Amjad Kamal
Download or read book The Alzheimer's Disease Challenge, Volume II written by Mohammad Amjad Kamal and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-04-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the success of Volume I of this Research Topic, we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume II: “The Alzheimer's Disease Challenge”. The repeated failure of clinical trials on the amyloid-based medications and the pessimistic calculations of Alzheimer's disease cost burden for the next few decades present a severe challenge to humankind with severe social implications. In recent years, several alternative diagnostic and treatment procedures have been presented to treat and manage Alzheimer’s disease as it has been nearly impossible to suggest a holistic solution. Several revelations in human biology have highlighted the multiparametric character of the disease. Besides the amyloid aggregation and neurofibrillary tangles that result in Aβ toxicity and tau phosphorylation, processes such as Gene Mutations, Proteins Misfolding, Brain Biochemical and Histopathological Changes, Behavioral Changes, Nutrition and Metabolism Alterations, and Autonomic Dysfunctions due to Central Nervous System dysregulations are common signs and probably early diagnostic biomarkers in most of the Alzheimer's classification categories.

Book Synopsis Parkinson's Disease, Second Edition by : Ronald F. Pfeiffer
Download or read book Parkinson's Disease, Second Edition written by Ronald F. Pfeiffer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 1335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, considerable advances have been made in our knowledge and understanding of Parkinson's disease (PD). In particular, there has been an explosion of information regarding genetic contributions to the etiology of PD and an increased awareness of the importance of the non-motor features of the disease. Theories regarding the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of PD have also been refined, and new treatment modalities and advances implemented. Reflecting these changes, this second edition features new chapters devoted to genetic aspects of PD, non-motor features of the disease, and aspects of the pathophysiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of PD.

Book Synopsis Advances in Neuromodulation Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease and Aging-Related Movement Disorders by : Kailiang Wang
Download or read book Advances in Neuromodulation Treatment of Parkinson’s Disease and Aging-Related Movement Disorders written by Kailiang Wang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parkinson's disease (PD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive motor disability with a spectrum of non-motor symptoms. Similar to Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, Huntington's disease, and other aging-related movement disorders are widespread in the elderly with relatively unideal medicine-treatment effects. In recent years, deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been established as an effective treatment for PD and other aging-related movement disorders, especially with motor symptoms. However, there are still many problems to be solved in research work and clinical practice in this field. For example, it is unclear regarding the most effective stimulation targets or the underlying mechanism of DBS. And it is still unknown how to choose the optimal targets among STN, GPi, PSA, VIM, etc, or if we could choose the nerve fiber for stimulation besides the nuclei, And despite wearable sensors could be a powerful tool for the digital evaluation of movement disorders or provide the feedback biomarkers for DBS, the closed-loop biomarkers for DBS are still lacking. Furthermore, apart from PD, the DBS treatment in gene-related dystonia, Huntington's disease, and other movement disorders also needs to be further explored.
